It's just been plain old cold up here in the Poconos. Right now it's about 15 or so. We're used to low temps up here, but not this early in the season. So, we pull our heavy sweaters and polarfleece out of the back of the closet, and dig out the earmuffs and gloves. The sun was out today at least; for the past week it's been cloudy and snowy, so it seemed even colder than it really was.
But I don't want to sound like a total whiner. There are some lovely things about the bitter cold up here. The trees make a pretty crackling sound in the afternoons. The stars seem closer and the air seems clearer. The squirrels chatter more, it seems, and you notice the chickadees and nuthatches on the pine trees. The other birds have either left for warmer climes, or are hunkered down in their nests. I like a pile of blankets on the bed, and baking something in the afternoon to take the chill off the house.
Today, I baked a test pie. My darling family has requested a couple of cherry pies for Thanksgiving, and it has not occurred to them that cherries have not been in season for months. So I am testing with frozen, and canned, and various combinations thereof. Not as good as fresh, but you work with what you've got. The problem with pie testing is that I am home alone this weekend, and someone is gonna have to eat all this pie.
Oh, the sacrifices I make for my sisters....

It's a terrible thing to have to do but someone has to do it. I think it's wonderful that you are willing to make such sacrifices for your family.

My pie baking wife is volunteering to move closer so that you may bake pies together! Personally , I am feeling a quick 15 or so pounds coming on........ B-

One has to admire your drive and determination to undertake this grueling project all by yourself.Good luck.
