Banjo as For the Birds

Posted by Joanchek on Tuesday, December 9, 2008

Great practice today;  why do Christmas songs so sound good on a banjo?  Happy music, I guess.  Or that bell-like sound.  Who knows?  No complaints here.

As far as I am concerned, the scariest movie ever made is "The Birds."  There's something about a familiar thing acting unpredictably that is just chilling to me.  I still get the shivers when I see blackbirds massed on the phone wires.  And as some of you remember, I had quite an adventure summer before last with the whole Crow in the Stump debacle.  Even though I keep two pet parakeets, my history with birds just isn't a good one.  (Someday I'll tell you about the turkey that flew into the windshield.) So, today the phone rings.  It was the kiddo and it was obvious she was upset.

"Mom?  I killed a bird."  You what!? "I killed a bird."  How did you manage to do THAT?  (Keep in mind she's at school, no car, no weapons of any kind.)  "I stepped on it."

How do you step on a bird?  wondered I.  "You know how those little birds eat crumbs and stuff off the sidewalk, and in the parking lot?  Well, there were some of those tiny birds eating a pretzel on the sidewalk.  And usually when you get close they fly away, and they come back after you pass.  But this little bird must have been stuck in the pretzel, and I was talking to my friend and didn't look down and I heard a terrible crunch under my boot..."  What did you do?  Did you leave it there? (the horror!)  "I told a policeman on the corner.  He went over and kicked it into the gutter."  I think the method of (non-) removal bothered her as much as the tromping itself.  "I cleaned my boot off in the grass!" she wailed.

The poor kiddo is mortified, although not as mortified as the bird is.  I believe I will call her Bwana, the Great Hunter, from now on.  Is this avian karma come to call?  Is there some great winged conspiracy against me and my family?  Maybe my parakeets will take over the house.  If they do, I hope they can keep up with the laundry.
