My father is a pretty remarkable fellow. He'll be 85 in a couple of months, and he's in good health and still very active. He and my mom spend their winters in Arizona in an active senior community that they like very much. There's so much for them to do there, and they have a very busy social life. Dad has always loved music. He took organ lessons as a boy, and we had a piano in the house growing up. He played a bit, by ear, mostly. "Fascination" is still his favorite piece to play. I can remember him teaching me some little duets as a kid; we had a great time. When he was in his 50's, he took up the accordion. He took lessons, got together with other accordionists and had a ball with it. Unfortunately, his accordion was huge and heavy, and he can't manage that anymore. (I need to dig it out of the storage closet and sell it, it's a tortoise-shell Hohner with sterling trim. A beauty, needs a few reeds though.) For his 80th birthday, I bought him a concertina, but that didn't quite suit him. The other day, I got an email from my mother: Dad has taken up the dulcimer. I do not know what kind of dulcimer; she did not tell me and probably doesn't know that there are different kinds. I am guessing that it's a mountain or other lap style, but who knows? He's taking lessons and evidently enjoying it a great deal.
Never stop learning.
