Banjo as Worse Than I Thought

Wednesday, January 2, 2008

This morning, I opened the utensil drawer slowly, slowly.  If there was a frightened or wounded animal in there, I didn't want him to jump behind the cupboard to die a slow, inhumane death (and stink a couple of days later.)  The drawer slid open, smooth on its runners.  Mouse droplets all over the drawer;  a good sign.  I leaned over an took the briefest peek into Lunch Bag #1.  Oh ho!! I saw a tiny pink paw.  Pick up the bag, drop it into a plastic garbage bag.  I pick up Lunch Bag #2.  Seems a smidge heavy, and sure enough, Mousie's sidekick is in there neatly dispatched.  No gore, no guts--just a snapped neck and done.

Now, the problem is this:  my  mother has always said that mice come in odd numbers.  Which means that there's at least another solomouse running around.  We will see tomorrow, I suppose.

I really don't like killing creatures, but the truth is that mice do carry nasty virii and bacteria, and they're not safe to have in the house.  I'll keep laying traps until they remain unsprung, bait intact, for a few nights in a row.   Another fall in the Great White North.

Good practice today, in anticipation of my annual progress recording.  I've been very disciplined about not listening to those particular recordings of Wildwood Flower, so I can't wait to compare them.  I don't really hear my progress--since it happens in small increments (sometimes very very small!) it's hard to hear from day to day.  But I know I've come a long way this year, and I can't wait to proof the pudding, so to speak.  Speaking of pudding... off to bleach the kitchen again.

Thanks, all, for your mouse-catching suggestions.  I especially like Stanger's, because I get a new kitchen out of that deal!  I'm not fond of the sticky traps;  I'm a firm believer in swift and deadly dispatch.  I've used the catch and release traps with some success, but quit setting those when a mouse that I'd caught got out of the trap while I had it in my hand, scaring the bejeepers out of me.  I will not describe bejeepers to you... you'll know 'em when you see 'em.  I find these giant-clothespin-style traps to be pretty effective, but not as good as the old fashioned spring-and-wire-bar type.  I have also not missed the irony of catching these little mousies while Mr. is gone to work this week, 250 miles away.  Also, please note that parakeets do not deter mice from their mission of peanut-butter-feasting.

Anyone want to lend me a cat?
