So new clawhammer player here, bought a Deering Goodtime Openback about a week ago. Suffice to say I've a long way to go before I can play it well enough that anyone in my house is gonna want to listen. I have another mute which has been great but still a little loud and read about Mikes and I'm glad I did it definitely does a better job with reducing volume without messing with the overall tone and the build quality is fantastic.
If you live within 100 ft of anyone else and especially if you are learning and more dissonant than an experienced player, I highly recommend this as an essential accessory.

I've had a Fielding-Cutler mute for years and recently lost it. I found Mike's Banjo Mute looked almost identical to my FC mute. My order arrived quickly. Mike's Banjo Mute works great. It's not as quiet as my FC mute as it's not as heavy, but very close. Mike's Banjo Mute uses nylon screws instead of metal. I rated it an 8 just because of the nylon screws. It works great tho and i would recommend to anyone needing a top quality mute.

I purchased Mike’s mute for my 5 string flat finger board banjos. I was looking for something that was easy to use and effective. I read many reviews for banjo mutes and found Mike’s Mute reviews generally positive. I gave it a try. At first the strings buzzed a bit. After reading the instructions and reversing the placement of the mute, it works like a charm. Well-built; easy to use; very effective.
I have used other mutes that look like a hair pin. They are hard to install and seem to move the bridge a bit. Mike’s mute goes on smoothly with no disturbance of the bridge.
I just purchased my second Mike’s mute. This time the radius version for my Nechville 5-string banjo. These mutes will last me for the rest of my life. (hope my life lasts a long while)

I just got my second banjo, and getting a second Mike's Mute was a no brainer. It's so easy to put on and off, that using just the one I already had on both banjos would have worked fine, but having one for each instrument is a nice convenience. This product does exactly what it says it will do. It's extremely well made, durable, easy to use and effective. An absolute 10 out of 10 and must have product for anyone who ever has a need to play at anything less than full volume. Competing products don't come close to the quality of Mike's Mute.

Been playing since 1980, and had a standard mute for straight banjo bridge, but when I upgraded to a compensated bridge a number of years ago, I could never find a suitable product. Started playing again after a long break and needed a mute to keep the wife and dog happy. Did an online search and found Mike's Banjo Mute. Got it today and within a minute, had it on the banjo with no issues at all. It works great! Makes the banjo almost sound like a soft dobro. Strings don't buzz and action stays solid. It is awesome and I would recommend it to anyone needing to mute their instrument for quiet practice at home. Before ordering, I emailed Mike to ensure I ordered the right product and he responded quickly the same day. He put my mute in the mail the next day. I couldn't be happier with the product and customer support.

I'm very new to banjo; 6 weeks into learning clawhammer . After 50years+ of guitar playing, I had a yearning to have the challenge and joy of being a beginner!
A big issue has been practicing (often very early morning or late evening) without disturbing the rest of the household!
Having tried several mutes and not being that impressed, I heard about Mike's Mute and decided to order one.
Massively better than anything else I've tried!
1 It's really easy to fit on and take off; it's done in seconds.
2 Being made of brass, it looks nice on the instrument . Being aesthetically appealing to the eye makes a difference!
3 Probably most importantly, the sound. It quietens the instrument a lot and makes the sound very soft and mellow; to my ear, rather like a lute or a harp. Fine for quiet practice.
4 No annoying the rest of the house; I'm still married!
All in all, highly recommended; a nice piece of kit.
ps I've now got 2 and they arrived in UK from US in 9 days which I thought was impressive!

Beginner here and I couldn't be happier with Mike's banjo mute. It is quick to install (and remove if needed) and doesn't seem to negatively impact the sound of the banjo while still muting it. I live in an apartment so this is really perfect for me. Now I can practice without being nervous I'm disturbing anyone. It makes a huge difference. I'm going to of buy a second one to support Mike's American made product for my second banjo.

I have tried many different mutes over the years. A year of lockdown with the family in the small house really made it necessary for me to find something even better than what I had.
As a student on Noam Pikelny's Artistworks-course, my attention was drawn to Mikes Mute, hailed by the a large part of the community as one of the best ones around. I was not disappointed.
It adds enough mass to the bridge to mute more efficiently than any previous mute, I have used. Furthermore, mounting is the easiest and most non-intrusive, I have tried. My previous mute was installed with some difficulty and a hex key and had to be slided backwards from the bridge when not in use. The mute before that was more of a clamp that fit over the bridge and would cause tuning issues when installed an removed. Neither would mute as consistently and as well as the Mike mute.
Buying from Mike and shipping to Europe was a very good experience. I can thoroughly recommend the product.

I live in an apartment complex with thin floors. I love playing my banjo. My banjo is loud.
Jokes aside, I was skeptical about shelling out over 30 bucks for a metal bridge clip, but Mike's mute really is worth every penny. You can't really get a banjo mute which allows you to keep your full bluegrass tone quality with a fraction of the volume, so the somewhat metallic sound threw me for a loop at first. But it's not grading, it's almost serene and harmonious, like playing an electric guitar with no distortion on minimum volume. Great for some melodic or slower pieces as a bonus.
And now I can practice at night. Good on ya, Mike.

I am very happy with Mike's Mute. It is easy to apply, and the muted sound is great. I bought this mute to replace a mute which was pushed on to the bridge (the clothespin idea) and the pressure to apply it would frequently throw my bridge out of alignment. Mike's Mute is an easy fit which slides underneath the bridge and is secured by hand-tightening. The hardware looks very solid and the mute doesn't interfere with my right hand when I'm playing. It also comes with a cloth carrying case.
I can now sit out on the back patio and enjoy banjo playing without worrying about complaints from the neighborhood association.

I had assumed that retirement would bring many hours of banjo practice in an empty house. Then the pandemic hit, and suddenly the banjo critics were home 24/7. For four months the Stelling basically sat unused.
Mike's banjo mute has solved that problem for me. With the mute on, the banjo is actually quieter than even my parlor guitar. Most of the time, no one will even know that I am picking the banjo.
An added benefit is that as the mute cuts down on both volume and many overtones, I find that it is easier to pick up on problems in my timing and picking patterns.
Quick shipping and communication from Mike was just icing on the cake.

I have two Banjo mutes from two different companies they are the type shaped in a u made out of brass and felt lined that slide onto the bridge. They work alright, but sometimes you have to fiddle with them to try to eliminate the tinny sound on some of the strings. After a while the felt loses its shape, plus sometimes the felt catches on the bridge. After reading Mike’s Banjo Mute advertisement I decided to try one. I bought my first Mike’s Banjo Mute on January 30, 2020.
It’s simple and quick to put on and take off and the banjo still keeps a sweet sound but considerably quieter. I liked it so well I just purchased my second one to keep at my office with one of my other banjos.

While staying in a hotel recently, I received a call from the front desk. The manager told me there had been complaints about the noise coming from my room. Apparently, my neighbors weren't banjo lovers. I really had not considered how annoying my playing could be in the next room. I stopped playing and started shopping for a mute. I considered it to be an unselfish purchase that my family would appreciate as well. I settled on Mike's Banjo Mute and much to my surprise, I am the one enjoying it most. I expected a loss of sustain as the term "mute" would imply......not so. The tone is great, the sustain is great and I actually feel more relaxed when I play. Many thanks to Mike Stidd for the product and prompt shipment. Hopefully this mute will keep me in the good graces of my family and the Holiday Inn!

This is my second Mikes Mute.
I live in Australia and he post's them without any trouble.
I tried a few types a number of years ago when I was starting out at learning the banjo.
Now I am teaching a Mate to play and have lent my mute to him. So, it was time for me to buy another.
I used it a lot when starting out on the banjo and was wanting some time when only I could hear myself play, and have taken it on a cruise and other overseas travel and have managed to get some 'quiet' playing in.
The thing about Mikes Mute is that it works.

Best banjo mute that I've tried so far and well worth the money. Can still hear the individual pitches of the notes without the loud volume to keep the wife up past her bedtime. I can get a lot more practice in that way. And, the design is very kind to bridges without any damage whatsoever. Not like the chunky metal mute that you push down onto the bridge. Extremely well made. Highly recommended.

I'm new to the banjo and my repetitive late night practicing was driving my wife crazy on the next floor up in our house. I tried other home remedies (like sponges) but I didn't get good results and they were kind of a pain. I ordered Mike's Banjo Mute for my Deering Goodtime 5 string banjo and received it in a few days. It works great. It really quiets down the volume, but the banjo still sounds good. My wife doesn't even know I'm playing now. It's nicely designed and simple to use. Guide it though the holes on the bridge, tighten the two screws and you are done in under 5 seconds! Great price point as well. Brilliant!

Just ordered AND received immediate confirmation on shipping for my new Mike's Banjo Mute. This is actually my second one since my other stays at home and this new one will be stashed in the camper trailer. I love this mute. The materials, the engineering, the finished product and the ultimate performance of this mute is far superior to other mutes I've used in the past. I use David Cunningham's zebra wood bridges and they are a tad beefier than basic maple bridges. On these beefed up bridges, those other cylinder type, metal tube mutes won't fit. But Mike's mutes work differently so they can be used perfectly for fat-footed bridges. They definitely reduce my banjo's volume by probably around 50%...no kidding!

I've used a cheap mute before on a tenor banjo but the sound it created was dreadful. I've got by for ages by trying to appease the family by practicing without picks but then wearing picks starts to feel odd if you play too much without them. I didn't want to waste more money on a cheaper mute again and risk it sounding horrible so all the reviews I read lead me to Mike's Mute, It's brilliant, my wife adores it and I can play hard while the kids are in bed, very well made, easy to fit or remove and leaves the banjo sounding super quiet, but still like a banjo. Cost me a bit more with postage as I'm in the UK but it arrived in 10 days. Very impressed.

Let's face it...my practicing does not lull my wife to sleep! I am learning and a night owl, therefore its been disappointing not being able to practice after my wife has gone to bed. Not true anymore! This mute is awesome! My only recommendation is that a picture of how it looks after installed ( which is very easy once you know how it is attached) should be included with packaging. I had to go online to check it out. Not a biggie I suppose. Also I changed back to a standard bridge as the one I have been using is an offset (staggered) bridge which means I would have to change tuning a hair unless I want to practice with it out of tune. I'm a bit of a perfectionist. One nice thing which is not mentioned to my knowledge is that this mute works without the felt that you read about coming off on the banjo with other brands. One of my better purchases! Maybe in a couple of years my playing will help her fall asleep and I can sit it aside.

Well, everyone is right! The mute works as advertised. Mine buzzed at first because I installed it on the front of the bridge. Didn't bother to look at the picture on Mike's site first. RTFM.
With picks on, it is super quiet. I haven't put it through its paces yet, for two reasons: 1) I can't play well enough to put anything through its paces; and 2) I just got it two hours ago. What's amazing about that is that I ordered it on a Saturday morning and it arrived in Florida (from Utah) in Monday's mail. Bravo.

Another very satisfied customer. Just got mine today. HIS on line instructions are the best so no need to go further to learn how to use it. Make sure the brass top piece is all the way up against screws BEFORE you insert it..as otherwise there's no room for the legs to go down and get underneath the bridge. THEN tighten it up.
I LOVE being able to play with a decent amount of force...without bothering anyone (including myself!)

This little gadget is awesome. My wife appreciates the significantly lower volume that my RK-R36 puts out, and I like it because I can hear my backing tracks at a lower volume through my computer's speakers while I play along. I would have no qualms at all about playing with the mute attached in a thin-walled motel room and know that my neighbors would only hear faint music that sounds a little like an acoustic guitar. Love it, love it, love it.

I tend to like to pick at odd hours, sometime very late and sometimes very early. Then there are the odd hours for my wife which is anything time between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm lol. Not really but there is the intrusion that my playing does have about anytime I do play, so I started out trying different things to mute the sound. Clothespins worked but changed the sound of the banjo and I didn't care much for it, tried putting a towel in the resonator and just didn't care much for taking the resonator off, putting the towel in and then having to take it back off to get the towel out, lazy I guess. Started looking for a mute and was surprised to find so many of them. After reading review after review, I decided to give one a try, just to see. I chose Mikes Banjo Mute. After going through several attempts to purchase the mute through his website, was not Mikes fault something about PayPal and the card I was using. I have to say that Mike was EXTREMELY helpful during this time. I sent him an email explaining what was taking place on the website and he emailed me back with in minutes, pretty personal if you ask me and would like to say Thank You Mike for the assistance!! I ordered the mute and in a week it showed up and in a nice bag, which I was not expecting but if I had read the description on his web site a little closer it does say it comes with a bag. Got the mute, put it on my banjo, takes all of maybe 15 seconds and WOW!! It so mutes the banjo and retains the sound that I could not be more pleased. It lowers the sound to what I would say is an electric guitar not plugged into an amp. The construction of the mute will last for a long time, I will not have to purchase another one in my life time unless it would get run over by and train. Pleased? Oh yeah, very pleased. Would I or will I recommend Mikes Banjo Mute to others? No question about it, if there is another mute that does a better job then you would not be able to hear the banjo at all! Mike, you have done a great job with the mute, I thank you and my wife thanks you!!

The first couple of years I had my banjo it sat in the case and did not get played much because I lived in a neighborhood where the houses were close and my house was small. The only real time I had to play was at night and it was just so loud that I tried going outside. The neighbors politely let me know this was not going to work. My wife let me know she could still hear it inside the house.
I resolved to play in the garage where I was either very hot, or very cold. Then I found out the neighbors could still hear it. Sadly, I played less and less as a result.
A year or so ago, I decided to try to find a solution again and found out about mutes. After reading all over the web, I decided to shell out a few more dollars and try the Mike's Mute.
Having this mute gave me the opportunity to play again. Playing with a mute is no substitute for playing without, though. There is just so much the mute hides, and it can hide bad habits too, that you will hear when you take it off. That being said it is still far better than the alternative, that being no playing at all.
The mute is excellently designed and made of great materials. It does not damage my expensive bridge in any way. The volume reduction has actually allowed me to identify a vibration problem with my tailpiece! It is a little louder than what an electric guitar sounds like when it is not plugged in, and far quieter than an acoustic guitar. It is still too loud to play inside medium size houses while people are sleeping.
I have since moved to a quiet place where the properties are spacious enough that I can play on the porch with out disturbing anyone. If I miss the chance to play before it is too late, I still find it quite useful to use the mute. It should be in every Banjo player's kit.
Do yourself a favor and buy this mute!

This the best banjo mute that I've ever tried. It's well made...solid brass and, will quiet down my original flathead with absolutely no problems easy to put on (like 15 seconds) and, no damage to the bridge. I can pick as hard as I want and, no one in the rest of the house...about 3000ft. can hear a sound. Love it.
I can literally sit in the next room and really lean into my right hand and, the banjo sounds great...clear and intonation is on the money.
I had the solid wood one but, it doesn't even compare to the quality that Mikes is able to produce.
Very, very happy. I may but a couple more for the other banjo's that I have....it's that good.

Last year, I decided that enough was enough. I was going to teach myself to play the banjo. So I bought an inexpensive banjo, a couple of books, and got started.
One week later, for the sake of my marriage, I bought a mute from Mike's online store.
I am a terrible banjo player, and a year's worth of practice has not brought me any closer to producing recognizable music. It has been a rough road. But because I got the mute, my wife does not have to listen to my stiff fingers at full volume.
When I bought it, I was not sure how much it would dampen the sound. The result exceeded my expectations. It is easy to attach, and reduces the volume of my poor scales to a reasonable level. The dog will even - occasionally - venture into the den to see what is going on while I try to figure out that blasted tablature.
Before the mute, I was totally on my own.
All seriousness aside, I have been very pleased with the product. It is easy to use, and very effective. You pick the superlative, and I'll agree to it.
Mike, my wife thanks you.

I have used virtually all banjo mutes available for the last 35 years in an attempt to keep my banjo and my wife in the same house and found that Mike's Banjo Mute is by far the easiest to use and best sounding of all I've tried. It's straight forward to put on...just slide the feet under the bridge and tighten the screws - no fumbling with pieces under the strings. Upon first glance it would seem that the screw pegs extend too high above the bridge for comfortable right hand position but I found this not to be the case...I was able to pick with ease. Try it...you'll like it!

I got my mute about 2 weeks ago, and since I had never used a mute before(except a towel inside my resonator) I was a little confused about how to put it on. I am not a very good visual learner and could not figure out the video. So I emailed Mike and he got right back to me with easy instructions. it worked and now I use the mute a lot. I have a teacher who wants me to practice rolls and my husband was bored hearing me. Now I can work on my lessons after work and give him some peace.
Last summer it seemed that every time I practiced my banjo out on the back porch, my neighbor would start up his lawn mower. I bet that won't happen this year if I use the mute!

I'm a novice banjo player who needed a cost effective way to keep from disturbing others in the house. I used the Banjo Hangout site to identify vendors. The web site at Mikes_mute@yahoo.com was excellent. Site videos showed how to correctly attach the mute to a banjo, and hear how the mute performs. When I telephoned the vendor for more information, my call was taken by the owner - Mr. Mike Stidd <mikes_mute@yahoo.com>. Mr. Stidd answered all my questions quickly and even resolved a technical problem I had making payment. I received my standard mute (there is another model for banjos with curved fingerboards) in about 5 days. My mute arrived in a small cloth bag. I was immediately impressed with the workmanship of the mute which is composed of finely machined brass, aluminum, and nylon parts that should last indefinitely. Installation takes about 30 seconds. Bottom Line: My banjo mute performs as advertised. It reduces the sound of my 22 fret banjo (with the resonator in place) to a level equivalent to an acoustic guitar. I have not experienced any buzzing or after tones. All frets work fine. The mute does not appear to affect height of strings above the neck. After attaching the mute, only slight adjustments to my tuning were required. The owner's professionalism, good humor, and desire to provide the right product were exemplary.

Mike's Mute is fantastic. I've always traveled with two banjos. One with a mute on my open back for practice and the other for jamming. The mute on the open back was very difficult to remove, so it was a permanent part of my OB.
Now, with Mike's Mute, I'm able to use my Nechville for practice at the condo without bothering anyone.
The best part, other than the reduced volume, is how quickly and easily it can be installed and removed.

This is an amazing device. I haven't been permitted to play my banjo when my wife is in the house since I bought it last year. I bought Mike's Banjo Mute about a month ago now and I can play in the next room and she can barely hear me. I have another mute but it doesn't even come close to how effective Mike's Mute is.
Thank you Mike for a fantastic product!!

I was anxious to test this banjo mute out, as this was highly recommended through a banjo enthusiast here in town. I've been reading these superb reviews as well. My banjo mute arrived about a week ago and I've been able to test it a bit. Great design, easy to slip onto the bridge, tightens well. Banjo still sounds great. No buzzy interference as long as it is clamped on properly. Very nice. It's received an A+ in my household, as there is a significant other needing their beauty rest on weekends :-) No complaints about early morning practices. It was a pleasure buying from Mike. Highly recommended!! 😊

Hi BHO,
I received my Mike's Banjo Mute in the mail and it only took 10 working days to reach me in Ottawa.
It is nicely made and finished, and came with an extra nylon screw in the event that one should break. As promised
it installs quickly and easily and the reduction in volume from the banjo is considerable with negligible affect on
the tone. It fits easily around my bridge, a Grover Acousticraft model 95. I had to re-tune slightly after
installation - wait a minute, you always have to re-tune slightly so I guess I can't blame the mute
I wish I had one of these years ago as I probably would have practiced and played a lot more. Now I have to make
up for lost time.
When I first put it on the banjo and started to play I found that my hand was rubbing on the top part of the nylon
screws that protrude a little from the adjustment nuts. I quickly realized that because of the way I was sitting
(slouching actually) it was putting my picking hand in the wrong position. Sit up and hold the instrument properly
and there is no problem at all.
This is a really great banjo accessory and I recommend it to anyone who would like to quickly and easily dampen the
volume of their banjo, thereby earning the gratitude of their spouse, children, neighbours, cat, dog or other
dwelling occupant. You just have to take it off once in a while and play without it to ensure their continued
appreciation of it.
Thanks Mr. Stidd, well done.

I have tried just about every mute known to man (my wife is not a banjo fan) - all had problems of one sort or another. This is a finely crafted piece and works like a charm - does the job, doesn't get in the way, and no odd tones, sounds like my banjo, just quieter!

Maybe I shouldn't give this a 10 since I don't have any experience or other mutes to compare it to - but it works. I put a hand towel between the coordinator rod and head, and that helped some. Add Mike's Banjo Mute, and I can practice while others in the same room watch television.
I also am catching myself tap the head with fingers and thumb, so it's helping me to clean up my playing as a bonus.

Everyone beginner and anyone who is not complimented by their spouse or other family members on your playing abilities :) should buy one of these!!!
Now with it installed I can practice anywhere with out having the "little woman" suggesting I play her favorite song which is "Far Far away"!!
Great product that does what it promises!
As an extra bonus it seems to give my notes better "sustain" but at a very much lower volume. COOL!

I've just started learning the banjo and needed to be able to reduce the volume when practicing so that I wouldn't be banished to the kitchen! I read a few reviews and Mike's Banjo Mute sounded like the best option. The mute arrived in about a week from the USA to UK. My banjo now has a similar volume to an unplugged electric guitar. Tim

After a lot of deliberation and reading reviews i decided to go for Mike's Banjo Mute. I've just picked up the banjo recently and was told by my wife and daughter that my next purchase should be the best mute on the market! I'd heard various recording of it in action on line but stil wasn't too sure; however, from what I'd read of the reviews it sounded top notch. The mute arrived super quick despite being shipped from USA to UK and Mike's store kept me informed of the dispatch etc. I can't recommend it highly enough (nor can my wife!) as my banjo now has a similar volume to an unplugged electric guitar, which means I get my much needed practice and my wife gets her much needed beauty sleep (joke Mrs B - not that you're gonna be reading this!). Being a newbie to the banjo, or any instrument, I had no knowledge of mutes but had been ordered by the boss to find one asap. I thought my playing was coming along nicely but hayhow. Computer on lap asking it questions, reading reviews and watching youtube vids resulted in an order for Mikes Banjo Mute.
Did I make the right decision and is everyone in the house happier? Absolutely! on both counts. The mute not only makes the sound quieter but gives it a very mellow tone and it can be put on and off the bridge in seconds. In my very limited knowledge Mikes Banjo Mute does it for me and my wife which is more important.

Got my Mike's Banjo Mute in the mail yesterday, only 3 days after I ordered it, and I am amazed at the sound. It greatly reduces the volume, but doesn't muffle it. The sound is very warm and nice. With this I can be able to practice at night also. I have also used the Iucci mute, which is good, but Mike's is better. I saw the mute in action in a video: http://youtu.be/c-O_dsniThA
So I bought it; works as well as in the video. Definitely suggest getting one of these.

I ordered the mute from Mike's website http://www.mikesbanjomute.com on Friday 17 October 2014. Mike emailed me to say he would be mailing it out the next day (Saturday).
As I live in the UK I thought that it would take a few weeks for it to arrive. However, to my surprise, it arrived on the following Friday!
It was easy to fit onto my Ozark 2104G banjo and it immediately quietened it to a much lower level noise level. My wife was impressed as was I too. I am a beginner trying to get into playing Bluegrass. When I put on my finger picks, my wife said she could hear it still in our bedroom, but said it was at an acceptable level (phew!).
I'm really pleased with it and it is already saving my marriage (if we did go to the divorce court, she can keep everything if I can keep my banjo!)
I have marked this 9 just incase Mike can improve on it further and just in case my wife changes her mind. I would definitely recommend it!

Hi folks,
I bought a banjo mute from http://www.mikesbanjomute.com/ and thought I would write a review about it. I had to get a banjo mute eventually, because I practice a lot in a small room, and when it gets late I was concerned about distrubing my neighbours. So I found mikesbanjomute.com and checked it out. I have seen lots of utube vids about them and was a bit dubious about how they actually reduced the level of sound to an acceptable level. You can see and listen to a video demonstration on his site. And if you Utube this link :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMhj7oZp3mU Bill Evans also gives a video demo about it. Well it came through my door today and I was keen to see if this would work. Let me tell you, IT DOES WORK! I was Very surprised by how Quite my banjo sounded. To be honest, I took it off played a tune without it, then put it back on to see if I was dreaming. I was giggling with delight! This made my day ! I was so happy with it I had to come here and express my views. Totally satisfied with it and all credit to Mike, you did good ! So if you are thinking of buying one, get one from mikesbanjomute.com. Happy pickin!

This is the second Mike's Banjo Mute that I have purchased. There was nothing wrong with the first one, it works great. When I travel and I am in the hotel/motel room that I am staying in, I attach the mute to my banjo and practice away. I have had the first mute for several years and to date I have had nobody complain about the sound coming from my room.
The reason why I purchase my second mute is because my girlfriend lives in Texas (I am out in California) and when I go out there and we go places, I bring along the banjo that I keep at her house. Now I can keep Mike's Mute in my Texas banjo case. This eliminates me having to remember to pack it every time.
I would recommend Mike's Banjo mute to every banjo picker. They are well made, easy to use and they work. Both times that I ordered the mute, it arrived in my mail box 3 days later.
Happy pickin'

I bought this after reading a review on Banjo Hangout.
The mute arrived very quickly; I live in Hong Kong and was impressed by the delivery speed. I just have to echo what I read, a very well presented bit of kit which does what it says on the tin. As I live in a shoe box, all my neighbours could hear my bum notes, and there were lots as practice was limited to normal hours. With the mute I can practice in the middle of the night and never disturb my partner never mind the rest of the block.
Thanks Mike, I am able to get more practice and there are less of those bum notes. A highly recommended accessory.

I'm giving this mute a ten, because it has made my life so much easier. We live in a quite small home and are usually within earshot of each other. I can clamp the mute on and hammer away without disturbing anyone. The mute makes my banjo about as loud as an acoustic guitar, but still has lots of sustain. I would recommend Mike's mute to anyone without reservation. I ordered the mute on a Sunday night and had it in my hands 8 days later. Great service and a great product.

Service was excellent, purchased online whilst in Toronto, was emailed saying it would arrive within 2 weeks of order; it arrived in the UK within 1 week.
Fitting is simple, and it works. It does seem to affect the tuning of the banjo either.

I've just started learning to play my Washburn B17 and I'm upsetting a lot of people at home, even the cats go outside when I get out the banjo.
I work on a mine site in the Pilbara region of Western Australia on a fly in / fly out basis (2 weeks on 1 week off) and therefore have the opportunity to upset a whole lot more people. Seems they prefer their head banging doof doof music to the ear jarring twang of a wrong note on a banjo.
So, to try to extend my life expectancy I looked up "banjo mutes" on the 'net. There's a lot out there I can tell you, and I just did. Checked a few out and then found "Mikes Banjo Mute", watched the demo video and decided to buy two. (Yes, two. I have a Washburn B14 as well which I can't play. Yep! My wife said that too.)
Ordered them on Saturday 24th May and the package is post marked 24th May. Can't complain about the service!! Arrived USA to Australia in 12 days which is quicker than the 3 weeks Mike said it would take. No complaints there either!!
Whacked one on the B17, it took only seconds and had a fiddle. LOTS less volume and the banjo still sounds like a banjo. I can play hard and not worry about those wrong notes upsetting the neighbors. I'm playing better already because I now don't have to try to keep the volume down and I don't feel embarrassed when I get it wrong.
If you need a banjo mute, this is the one to buy. It works!!

I'm super pleased with this product. The main selling point initially for me was the lack of fiddling around needed to get it on and off - it takes about 2 seconds and requires no tools, unlike most other mutes. The price was also on par with other mutes I was looking at here in the UK (Deering and GoldTone both have one, as well as Eagle Music having their own mute).
I got it today, installed it with no fuss, and am really pleased with it. I would say the level of muting is perfect - quite an achievement! It is quite enough that I still feel comfortable playing later in the evening (up to 11pm or so) even in our flat that has extremely thin walls (thin enough to hear conversations between flats). I also have a newborn and the volume is reduced enough to be much less jarring for the baby.
The tone with the mute still gives great feedback for practicing. In fact I found it helpful for practice in that it allowed me to better hear how cleanly (or not) I was playing.
I decided that I liked the look of Mike's product enough that I would order from the states rather than order any products available here in the UK (there is one store that sells Mike's mute over here but it was a good deal cheaper ordering it direct, even with postage). Mike's customer service was excellent - I received a personal confirmation email immediately. Delivery was extremely quick - 6 business days about - Mike clearly posted it the next day (I ordered in the evening).
This product has given me an extra 90mins or so of practice time in the evening and is one of the best accessories I've bought for my banjo - I think most banjo players could do with having one around for when they need a late night banjo fix.
I really can't think of anything lacking in this product - build quality, price and service are all superb as far as I'm concerned. It's great to see that good old fashioned American ingenuity is alive and well!

I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical after reading over all of the reviews and even after watching the YouTube video testimonials when it came to the Mike’s Banjo Mute. Well I bit the bullet, stepped up to the bar, and ordered one for myself. All I can say is WOW. All the positive reviews are NOT hype, they’re truth. I’ve only been playing for a couple of years and was pretty proud of my progress until last night after I had installed the mute. I never realized how many times my thumb was inadvertently hitting the head until I heard every strike come through loud as a rifle shot. I’m sure that Mike’s original idea behind the mute was to promote/enhance domestic tranquility amongst banjo players but even after only ½ hour of use, I can clearly see how this thing is going to improve my right hand technique 1000% over the next couple of months. This mute should be standard issue for any new or novice player. It is amazing to see how something with such a simple design can be so effective.

Bottom line - next to my banjo, this is my favorite banjo purchase to date.
I was previously using a Gold Tone mute with mixed results. Mike's Mute blows it away. It is well crafted and much more substantial than the Gold Tone mute. I actually find it easier to move on and off the bridge than the Gold Tone.
The best part is the sound. It is quiet enough to practice in a room with family and has a unique sound that is closer to an acoustic guitar. Sometimes, I will throw on the mute just to have a change of pace from the hard driving banjo sound we all know and love.
Mike has done a great job here and has created a quality product that would be at home in anyone's banjo case.

I've had mine for many months now, but have held off submitting a review because I was just waiting for one of those small nylon bolts to break. I have a Huber bridge that leans from both the front and back, and I have to really crank down on the tightening nuts to keep the mute from slipping off the bridge when I play. So much so that those small bolts are visibly bent.
BUT it's time to eat some crow. Those little bolts are really, really tough. I always crank the nuts down hard the first time to make sure the mute won't slide off in the middle of a song. And it doesn't.
Others have reported on the tonal effects. I'll just add that I can sit up past one in the morning working on that elusive lick, and mama never hears.
One thing though, If I was Mike I might add a very thin layer of cork to the underside of the brass bar that contacts the top of the bridge. It would make it a little less prone to slide and require less torque on the nut to hold it in place.
UPDATE: I've been shopping for that very thin layer of cork (to no avail) because the bridge has slipped off more and more frequently. No thin sheet cork that I can find. So I tried a strip of Johnson's Waterproof Tape. Plain old adhesive tape to us old timers. Voila, no more sliding off. Try it.

Very prompt shipping. I received it in 3 days in the US Mail. It's a simple design but very well-built, it's easy to attach, and it REALLY mutes the sound. It does seem to increase the sustain, and the sound is more guitar-like, but given how much it dampens the sound, it will make practicing late at night much easier on the marriage.

Mike's Banjo Mute will make you a better player. Not many folks will read far into the review so I had to start with the whole story. I'm not kidding here. I love a loud banjo but guess what? Nobody else in my house does. Years of hearing, "Quiet!" "Shush!" "That's too loud!" really puts a damper on your ability to practice. I've had this mute for 2 days now. I've practiced more in the last couple of days then I have in the last month. What makes you a better banjo player? Practice! and that's what I can now do without hearing the complaints. This mute gives a soft sweet sound to your banjo. It lets you hear what you're playing without getting in dutch with the wife. Thank you so much Mike! 100% recommend to buy.

As far as the sound reduction goes: at one foot my Mastertone is 96Db- The mute takes it down to 80db (radioshack sound level meter). That is a 16 db reduction- like wearing ear plugs. Plus it gives it a soothing sound and longer sustain. Now, if Mike can make one that deadens my missed notes!!

Mike's Banjo Mute has excellent fit and finish. It's made out of polished brass and aluminum, and tough nylon screws. It goes on and off easily, although not quite as easily as the Gold Tone mute. It mutes better than the Gold Tone mute, though.
The customer service is great. I had trouble with it slipping off; Mike answered my email quickly with a suggestion to rough up the bottom of the brass plate lengthwise with some 80 grit sandpaper. That took only a minute and worked perfectly.
