Where Purchased: Mike's Mutes
My practice time was beginning to annoy my wife, so I researched and purchased one of Mike Stidd’s banjo mutes (Mike's Mutes). His web site was quite easy to use. I even mentioned in the “note to seller” box that I wasn’t certain whether I should buy a straight mute or a curved one. He emailed me and gave me his home number. We talked and he made a slight custom modification to the mute before he shipped it.
My wife is happy that I can practice without making so much noise, which is a real problem in our small house. Besides, the muted banjo has a wonderfully intriguing sound all its own—sort of a dobro-banjo sound. I find myself being able to pick up tone and dynamics problems easier with the muted banjo.
