Hum......YouTube.

Clicked the link, got a image, the same as in your post, no video.

Went to YouTube, for the next one please don't run the video so fast, put the music in the back ground, and talk about what it is you are doing.

As a certifiable Luddite I prefer to read your posts.

Cheers

Dave

Also saw the video, no complaints here. That plate of Indian chaw looks like some delicious food, and it must taste mighty fine to stand alongside the local cuisine! Always wanted to try real gumbo, and Po'Boy sandwiches!  What a place to play music in!

Dan Knowles - Posted - 12/30/2016:  15:55:03

OK David...

I'll still post some of these just for you!

I can see a light at the end of the tunnel... And I hope it's not a train! We're coming on the downward slide of this mural project. And it sure feels good!

John was back today after a week of being out sick with the flu and crud and cold and such. It sure was good to have him back!

Here is some of what we got done today.

John Monroe and I...

John painting some fabric.

See Y'all soon!!!

Dan

Thanks for humoring this old Luddite.  Having still images allows me to revisit them with ease.

I like what is going on with your mural. I am assuming that the model for the lady in the mural is ether yours or Johns wife.

Dan Knowles - Posted - 12/30/2016:  21:00:14

Dave,

No she's not one of our wives. Instead she is from a photograph ca. 1900. I don't know anything about her. but she was perfect for the picture.

BTW there will be more videos... I hope you don't mind!

Dan

I don't mind videos if they are run at a reasonable speed.

Have a wonderful new year!!

Dave,

This post is an extra SSSSSSSSSLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWW  SSSSSSSSSSSSSPPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEED video for ya!wink

Today I made a pearl rosette for a sound port on the resonator of Tom Berghan's banjo d'Amore Orpheus.

Here's how it went...

This was my first design try. It is out of brass and sort of expresses some of the ideas I was playing with...

After I got over this one I made another design. then I hunted up a couple pieces of figured high grade pearl to make it with...

Glued the pattern to the pearl and after the glue dried I drilled som saw blade access holes....

And went to sawin'

Here is the piece after sawing but before filing and sanding cleanup...

Sanding followed filing. I don't remember who showed this tip here on the hangout (putting packing tape on the backside of sandpaper), But it is great! I use it all the time. THANKS!!!!

My kids gave me this little light for Christmas so I just had to show it off!

Oh ya, the pearl is there too!

I'm gonna add a couple small pieces of green abalone to this and it will be complete. I realize that this looks big here but in reality it's only 1 5/8" across....

See Y'all Soon!!!

Dan

This most recent post was at exactly the right speed, I was able to forward and back as many times as I pleased.  That made it very easy to enjoy your very nice work.  That is one great looking pearl that you have worked.  yes  smiley

Nice saw and light.

Cheers

Dave

BANJO d'AMORE

BACK TOGETHER

I meant to post a photo of the sound hole rosette as I drew it out originally. so here it is.

It was originally drawn three times the finished size, I shrunk it to size (1 5/8") in Corel Photo Paint and the rest you saw in the last post...

Using two sized forstner bits I drilled a stepped ledge & soundhole in the resonator flap. Here I'm staining the cut edges.

Making sure that everything fits...

Here is a little latch that I made to hold the resonator flap closed. It's got a knob on the outside to swing the foot around to catch the dowel stick.

Making sure the thang works!

I guess this is a glamor pre-glamor shot! Figure that out if you will!

A close up...

See y'all soon!!!

Dave1climber - Posted - 01/06/2017:  19:59:54

Dan

The rosette is looking great in it's pre glamor shot.  Will the final version will be even more glamorous?  I think yes.

I must be getting old, I don't remember the resonator on the Banjo d'Amore.

Has something happened to Dan?  No updates in two months gives me an uneasy feeling.

kwl - Posted - 03/10/2017:  12:21:45

Dan is a very busy fella. On March 6th I received an email from Dan about a sushi party for the Lee Academy of the arts in Paris, TN, on March 18. I think when he finds the time. He will be back.

I believe I see our friend Dan at about the 38 second mark in the video from THIS LOCAL NEWS STORY.  Well, I think his portrait may be in there a little earlier.
