FRIDAY

MY SON CAME HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL TODAY!!! What could have been a complete disaster has been turned aside. I fear that it will be a long recovery. He will certainly have a big scar to show off to the little ones! 

Here are some highlights of the day in the shop...

Joe Snow came by and worked on some Jacobs bracket shoes for me today. He drilled, filed and cut brass to make the yokes. I'm thankful for his help.

Being taken up with my work I forgot to make any photo so I'm leaving space where you can insert your own.

Here I'm doing a fret job on this 1852 James Ashburn guitar,  first I'm  pulling frets...

There were a couple of chips so here I'm repairing the fingerboard...

Patrick is back in the hospital with pneumonia and a collapsed lung.  We took him in yesterday complaining of pain and now he is back in his same room.... I think they had just enough time to change the sheets. Life isn't always fun but it is interesting.

John, Nels, Lew, Ellen, Chuck, Ken, David, Charley, R. Blakeslee, C Nyal, Dave, Rubicon & All of you kind folks who have called and sent messages of hope and support, I & my family thank you from the bottoms (and tops too) of our very full hearts.

SUNDAY 9:30 PM

We just got home from the hospital. When we left Patrick was far more comfortable than earlier. A bath, haircut and a beard trimming didn't hurt although it took a good while to accomplish. Lots of antibiotics and breathing treatments and pain reducers are doing their job along with a true set of Angels of Mercy who are nursing in the Henry County Medical Center.

Again we thank you!

A BIG THANK YOU

Thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers for Patrick and my family. These have meant more than we can express.

Patrick returned home from the hospital today. We would have killed and grilled the fatted calf and celebrated, if we'd only had one...lucky calf!

The boy has a great big scar and manageable pain. But now he is home and that is good.

For my part I have been keeping early mornings and late nights trying desperately to keep a bunch of balls up in the air. Thankfully most have stayed in their orbits, as I hoped. I am very thankful for the forgiveness for the ones who I missed.

It is times like this that I am once again reminded of how tenuous is our hold on this wonderful thing called life. It is amazing how kind are so of my fellow travelers.

Thanks so much.

Although Patrick had a tough first night home, we see healing right before our eyes.

I have learned another problem for those of who smoke out of this. Patrick (who is a very moderate smoker) was diagnosed with fungal Pneumonia. It is quite likely that this has gone undetected for quite a while, perhaps months. When I asked a doctor friend of mine about this I was told this type of pneumonia can lay hidden in the lungs for a long time and that the lungs of a smoker and one suffering this disease sound virtually the same.

BROTHER BOB'S BANJO

My good friend & BHO member Bob Tylar brought his Knowles banjo for its once in 8 year deep cleaning. Shelia (the banjo's name) was taken completely apart, cleaned and put back together. Here she's ready for the neck to be removed and the rim stripped down.

Off come the tuners....

I love this little cheepo screwdriver, it's the perfect size for these brackets. This rim (by the way) is cocobolo rosewood.

The neck off, I sand out some minute scratches prior to buffing...

Boy am I good! I'm buffing out both the neck and rim at the same time!!!

Yikes! Been away from this thread and just learned of Patrick's setback. Glad he's back and recovering again. Perhaps this will make a non-smoker out of him. Hope so.

Dan, it's amazing that you would continue to soldier on with this thread in light of all that's happened. Thanks for the updates on Patrick. Wishing for a complete recovery and a long healthy life to him, and to you, and to you all. I sure hope that's the last emergency you have for a loooong time.

Thanks for all of your hopes and wishes! Patrick is doing so much better this evening. He is now able to eat solid foods regularly and tonight he was in hawg heaven at dinner.... we had home made SUSHI! All cooked though.

How interesting that you would notice this. I'm sitting at the computer typing with that ebony banjo that you speak of in my lap. It is muted (right now) so its singing won't wake the house!  I believe Bob's banjo is ca. 2006 and this one is dated  Feb. 2007. So to answer your question, you sure might have.

FRIDAY 2-17-2014

Yes I'm still sitting here  with the first ebony banjo in my lap. Have you ever tried to type with a heavy banjo in your lap? This on is as heavy as many Mastertones that I've held. Crazy figuring that it is an openback.  I type a bit then I play a little. Type ...play, type... play it's a good way to go!

 I just went and weighed the thing... it comes in at a hefty 9 lbs. Bigger than any of my kids when they were born!

Busy day 4 setups completed today along with a few other assorted jobs (along with going to the grocery to buy supplies for sushi making).  Here is an interesting job. This 1927 National Duolian came to me with a neck so warped that it needed major surgery to make it playable. The fingerboard has been removed, I've laid out the placement of a new carbon fiber neck insert and now I'm getting ready to rout a slot for it... (Bill, do you see how that neck is attached? It's about a 4 inch spline)

Bob's banjo goes back together... I just love that cocobolo rim and gold hardware!

My friend, student and fellow BHO member Jon Eaton is in for a banjo lesson. I'm teaching him Kate's Folly a tune I wrote and was the tune I played the first time I won the Tennessee State Banjo competition. Jon's filming me so he can take it home and work on it. Yep David, that's the ebony!
