Thanksgiving is upon us folks.

Today being the 26th of November, my banjo playing days ended 10 years and 3 days ago in Myrtle Beach, SC...So what? Twas a great ride with only a few regrets...very few!

Needless to say I appreciate all the birthday wishes, a great banjo camp, decent health, (for the most part until 2003) and a world of wonderful friends the banjo has afforded me. And I appreciate Banjo Hangout for making this possible.

Next I'm gonna post a wish list pertaining to things that have been discontinued for one reason or another that I wish were still in production.

OK, this is where this thread starts to get even better...hearing what Sonny really values and wishes was still being produced today.  Is it certain old banjo parts or accessories, classic cars, vintage apparel, or what?  I know each of us has certain things that we wish were still being sold today, but Sonny's got a certain taste for the coolest stuff that's beyond all of us...give it some thought Sonny while you're enjoying Thanksgiving & bring it on!  We can't wait

Same here on the corn bread. To be sure it's made right  I make my own - in a cast iron skillet. Start out on stove finish in oven. Like my Mamma made it. Man, I'm gonna have to make me some corn bread tomorrow and have some pinto beans with it!

that corn bread was thick and heavy and course. we put white beans on ours and sometimes a little chopped white onion. What a wonderful dinner. My mom grew up in the Ozarks and made it great!

Mom always distinguished between "soup beans" and "bean soup"....She said soup beans was made with pinto beans and bean soup was made with white beans. Alot of folks call 'em by both names, but Mom was from Kentucky and I figure she knew what she was talking about...!!!

When I was growing up Mom had a regular rotation of meals every week. Pinto beans, cornbread, and salad was Wednesday's supper. Sometimes she'd put what she called chow-chow on the beans to spice them up. Today we call it picante sauce. Sure made for a tasty change! I always looked forward to slicing off the brown and crunchy part of the cornbread and slathering butter on that. A real treat that was! The crust came from using an iron skillet, starting on the stovetop and finishing in the oven.

Yeah, she had a little canister for draining the bacon grease into. Had a lid on it that when you took it off had a little strainer underneath to catch the little bits in. Grease underneath that.

Thursdays were liver-n-onions night with mashed potatoes, peas, and salad. 'Course our salad wasn't fancy like you see now - it was chopped iceburg lettuce, sliced up tomatoes with a dollop of Miracle Whip tossed in. It was good though!

Dang bacon grease. No french chef and all their sauces can match it. cook the bacon first in the morn and then cook the eggs in the same pan with the grease. Put a little garlic salt on the eggs first and then slap the hot bacon grease up over them with the spatula. Didn't have to flip them to get them cooked on top. yeah good. And what fun smelling as you cooked it and what fun smelling it around the house if someone else was cooking it. I am getting hungry as we write. Sorry Sonny to take this tangent but you started it :~) and I will quit it but I am having serious food flashbacks.

I wish Lester and Earl, The Stanley Brothers, Reno and Smiley were still here and playing like it was 1953.
I saw Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys in 1947 (I was 9) when Lester, Earl, Chubby Wise, Howard Watts played to a packed (1800 people) Memorial Hall in Dayton, Ohio..with heavy snow on the ground. I seem to remember it being 18 inches. That was a time I wish was still here. (5 years later I was a Bluegrass Boy and 27 years later on that same stage, they presented Bobby and I with the key to the city.!!!!)
I wish The Grand Ole Opry was still THE GRAND OLE OPRY, owned by The National Life and Accident Insurance Co. as it was in the 60's before they destroyed it with amateurs...management and entertainers... The greenback dollar took over the Opry.
How bout Silver dollars...2 $ bills...Liberty Dimes and Buffalo nickels?

Someone's Mom other than just mine, knew exactly how to make cornbread. LORDY..it was good. She used to put a ham hock in soup beans.
