Sonny and Brad,

That festival (Milan) will never be like it was when my Dad and Fred ran it.

Koa was a really good festival as well but sadly we don't have the attendance to the music like it used to be, case in point the Huron Valley Eagles.

Hi folks. Just checking back in here at the Hangout for the first time in a long time. Of course my first stop was this thread.

Anyway, I had the privilege of chatting with the members of the Del McCoury band on Saturday night and wouldn't you know it, Sonny's name kept coming up. I may have provoked it with Rob by asking him about 00 (and bragging on my own Chief) but Del had a few stories to tell me too. Absolutely great folks, so humble and personable.

I told my wife I'm getting banjo fever again - I may have to get my hands on one of those nifty-sounding new Rocky Top mahogany beauties soon....

Here's this weekend's NashCamp Schedule - there are just a few spots left if you'd like to join us. We say this every year, but I think this is going to be the best year yet. And with five classes running on Friday and Sunday, class sizes will be small - around 10 to 12 folks in each class. Come join us! And if not this year, next year!

See you soon at Camp Marymount!

Norm;

Are you related to, or do you know a fellow by the name of George Melanson?

I knew him 55-60 years ago in the Moncton area.

No I don't know him, but he's got to be a cousin or relative of some sort, hehe. If you don't mind my asking, how would you have known him?

Norm..

I talked to Jason. He said he had put a new head on the Chief and it hasn't sounded right since. He's gonna get it to Frank as soon as he can and get it taken care of. Jason is a good p[layer and a good guy as well. He did say that he had used it on the album as that it did sound pretty good. I've yet to hear it but I will, soon.

Just spent alot of my day reading this whole thread! Great Great stories. Living on the west coast can be hard on a beginning banjer player. Not as many opportunities at festivals, camps, accesss to my heros. Loved the thread and i learned alot. Might try and get to the camp next year.

Great video, I haven't seen that one.  I asked Frank Neat at Banjo Camp last weekend about putting a banjo neck on a guitar box....  just to mess around with.  He didn't sound very excited about doing it.  Where did you get that guitar Sonny?  And...  HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

You musta had a birthday,Mr. Awzbone....still older than me but I don't mind. Loafer

TheChief - Posted - 11/07/2012:  08:21:17

Raymonde, Allan, Dana, Bruce, Brad, Rattler, Terry...Lordy there's too many of you but I'll thank each of you for the Birthday wishes...one at a time. But, for now, I want you to know how much I appreciate your thoughts and taking the time to Express them.

I am for sure older than you Loafer, but JD is still older than me. (2 months and 2 days)

Been awhile since I talked to you. We had a wonderful banjo camp. Met a lot of new people..from far away too. The Netherlands, Washington, Oregon, California, Canada, New England. And everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, and learn a few things.

A healthy Alan Munde (happy to report) Ned Luberecki, Kristin, Tony Trischka, Bill Evans all did their usual teaching and explaining the intricacies of playing the banjo. Frank Neat took one apart and put it back together in 6 seconds!!!!! (That is a lie)

Aaron..The Guitjo was made sometime in the mid 70's by Greg Rich for Larry Mcnealy? who was playing on the Glen Campbell TV show at the time. When he came back to Nashville he had George Gruhn sell it for him. I saw it and bought it. I have two of them. That original and another that Frank Harlow built for me. Frank is the guy who built Gene Wooten's Dobro. I had been playing a Dobro body with a banjo neck and this was a replacement. Larry didn't use it on the CampbItell show because it didn't have very much volume. (So I was told)

Aaron, if you come to Larry Mathis' Banjothon in January, I'll bring one with me. I don't know the date for that just yet but as soon as I know I'll post it for you.

That's enough for now.

Sonny,Today I happened to hear "Hey Bartender"and" Today Has Been a Lonesome Day" Gotta be Benny Martin how about some thoughts on this session or Benny in general.Did he record anything else with you?Thank You!!!

TheChief - Posted - 11/09/2012:  07:43:59

I love Benny's fiddle playing, always have, but on these particular songs Benny was totally unprepared. If you listen closely you can hear what I'm talking about. On Hey Bartender, he got lost and finally had to stop and start again. And, although on Lonesome day he also got a little confused, however on that one he did cover it well. These were the days when there was no overdubs. When someone messed up we had to stop and take it from the top. That's the reason older records have mistakes, ours did anyhow.

He didn't record anything else with us but Bobby and I recorded some things with Benny on the CMH label.

Benny did some outstanding work with Flatt and Scruggs arguably some of the best fiddle work ever. Flint Hill comes to mind, Dim Lights Thick Smoke is another. I have a recording that Benny did live on the old Flatt and Scruggs radio shows..tune was The Martin Waltz. When Glen Duncan worked with us, he and I must have listened to it 100 times or more. He (Benny) played it through 4 times and each time was different, and better than the one before it. Fiddle sounded 10 feet wide. My opinion, Benny made Earl a better banjo player, and vice versa. They played off one another..it was like a contest. Some of the very best Bluegrass music ever played. Often copied, never duplicated.

Benny recorded on Mercury label and had several very good songs. And I bet you didn't know that he played guitar on them,. he hired Dale Potter to play fiddle. He had to have shown Dale how he wanted it played because it sounded so much like the BigTige. He was a member of The Grand Ole Opry for a short time. Benny was a very strange, different, personality. And, John Hartford's all time best friend.
