Hey Steve, thanks again for coming out to the show. Enjoyed the visit. I hope everyone is having a good and safe labor day. I found a photo and dont know if I have got it to post right on here, but this is from the first Osborne Brothers show I attended. I was 11, and if you can tell form the picture I was extremely excited. That one show changed my perspective on music and exactly how I wanted to play forever. The other one is from the Grand Ole Opry in 2004. These two photos represent two very memorable days for me. I will never be able to say this enough but, Thanks again Chief!

Great photos Daniel. After hearing you talk about both events now I can see you were in fact one happy fella.

Just checking in. Are people still staying at the Comfort Inn to attend the Station Inn the Thursday night before the Banjo Retreat? Is someone planning to organize a dinner? If so count me in. What restaurant was it, by the way? See you there.

Wow...can 't believe this thread was on page 3.....I've enjoyed following this thread even though I've been Chiefless ever since I traded #121 to Greg Earnest for a pristine unmolested 30's style 11.
As soon as this economy improves (or at least my little part of it)....I'm going to be in the market for a nice Mahogany or Walnut Chief.....preferrably with nickel hardware....:-)...

Ernie.....I wondered what became of 121.......glad you're enjoying her.....she's a great banjo for sure......and most certainly the most beautiful banjo I've ever owned.....I had boat registration stickers on the head...for a while....kind of like pete townsend did with his Les Paul... ...greg didn't like them too much....he took them off immediately......did he tell you he played it during the big foggy mountain banjo event at turner field in Atlanta...the biggest banjo get together for the guiness book?.....at that time it still belonged to me.....he was banjo sitting while I was deployed to kuwait.......
laceyth9 - Posted - 09/23/2010: 05:22:56
MajorBanjo,
What banjos do you have there on your couch and how does the Chief compare to them? I've never had the opportunity to play a real pre-war, just a couple of parts banjos. But, I love my maple Chief and will never part with it.
Tim L.

In the order they appear;
90' RB4 prototype; 50' PB150 converted to RB250; Chief; 35' TB-3; 28' Granada...with blaylock conversion ring and neat neck; at the time of the picture I had several style 11's and a couple of hubers that are not present in the picture........I love the cheif...plays and sounds better than any new banjo I've owned.....but there is magic in some of that old wood....

TheChief - Posted - 09/24/2010: 07:56:39
And, I might add, you are correct, there is definitely magic in some of those old banjos. But someday when that Chief wood will be much older..and if it sounds good now, wonder how it will sound then when our sons, daughters, and their children play.![]()

I definitely agree with you Chief.......I believe given the quality and current sound of these Chief banjos....they're bound to outshine the currently coveted prewars......:-)

Kristin won banjo player for the third straight time.
How good is that? I'm happy for her.
s
Woolpersteve - Posted - 10/01/2010: 02:34:52
Scary thing Sonny is that she is really just getting started.
Steve
TheChief - Posted - 10/01/2010: 05:12:13
She's 34 I think, and I know she must be a diligent worker, and she would
really need to love the banjo to accomplish what she has.
I've known her for 16 yrs. (App) and you just don't hear mistakes.
She will be with us at Nashcamp Sunday. I'm looking forward...14 days.
s
laceyth9 - Posted - 10/01/2010: 05:44:51
Sonny,
Will you tell us how you came to know Kristin and how she ended up playing a Chief? Surely she could play a pre-war if she wanted. And, does she record with her Chief or does she use something like your Granada? I'd like to hear the story behind that story.
Thanks much,
Tim L.
maverick - Posted - 10/01/2010: 20:24:46
Kristin is an incredible player. Always loved her playing.. I am also so happy for her.
How you doing Sonny?
I'm back from a loong hiatus from the banjer world... Kids, Economy, work, etc.. I don't even got a banjer anymore all I got is some Fender strats and a Gibson 335, been playing the blues :0
Got to get back into the banjo swing of things here pretty soon!
Majorbanjo - Posted - 10/01/2010: 21:00:19
Just getting back to the banjer world myself Mav.....I've got three banjos and about 20 guitars..........welcome back.......

Can't wait for Nashcamp..see some of you next Thurs..Sonny,I will definately see YOU.
TheChief - Posted - 10/08/2010: 13:33:06
Lordy..if she ever learns that cool backward roll she will...well, we'll see.
I will relate the story of Kristin and me, in a little while. She's like a daughter to me. One of the several people that I've ever known that is truly an honest person. They're few and far between.
7 Days..
Major..Mav..Man I'm glad to see you all back. You were missed.

Marthy (Eastern Kentucky for Martha) Adcock...is another.
Reckin' it ain't just my family from north/central KY. that says names differently....
Ada---Ady
Isa---Icy
Sarah---Surry
Harold---Harrell
(my name) Greg---Grig
(Mom's maiden name) Gregory---Grigrey
Growin' up I had a devil of a time learnin' to spell...![]()
RayD - Posted - 10/11/2010: 14:19:44
RatLer - would that spell = spill? In Texas it ain't much different:
earl = oil
doncha = don't you
bub = bulb. As in "Why doncha change that burnt out laht bub?"
warsher = that machine you clean clothes in
wachuana = what you want to? As in "Wachuana go and do that fer?"
coke = any variety of soda pop. As in "Ah'm goin to the store to git a coke. What kind you want? Answer: "Dr. Pepper." Or, "Big Red soda water and a Moon Pie."
Cheers,
RayD

RatLer - well, I'll have to get up your way some day! At least ah'll be unnerstood! In England it's a whole diffurnt deal:
Car terms:
boot = trunk
bonnet = hood
silencer = muffler (our muffler to them is a neck scarf)
Clothing:
suspenders = ladies garter belt
braces = our suspenders
muffler = neck scarf (see above)
wellies = rubber boots (Wellies - short for Wellington boots)
Other:
brolly = umbrella
knock me up = come by for a visit. Honest! Comes from knocking on someone's door.
Cheers,
RayD

I don't anything can top Southeastern Kentucky.
A couple of things:
Aingerns...Onions
Plime Blank..To look like.
Foamallmighty God...Before All Mighty God
Or a shorter form:
FoamaGod..Before My God.
Shivalay...Chevrolet
And on, and on..

Many thanks to everyone for coming and to all the instructors, Sonny and of course the lady that makes it all happen, Cindy. Weather was perfect, food was right on and I think even the instructors had a good time even though it is work for them...And instructor, Bill Emerson is certainly worthy of a lot of praise and I can see what he named his group The Country Gentleman, I think he fits that description perfectly.. Have to start planning now for next year as Cindy said it would be a week later--everyone start planning..
