Thats my old Granada she(Kristin) is playing on that CD. I think it's pretty good too.

She sure pulls the tone out of it and the tone is there for a person to pull in that banjo for sure. The meanest 4th string ever and the best looking banjo player on the circuit what a combination.

Sonny,

I just got a Mahogony Chief (No. 15) with flying eagle inlay that I acquired in a trade. Man, what a great looking, great sounding banjo! I love it. It goes good with the Maple chief I have.

Now you need a beautiful Walnut and you'll have the set.

We have a couple new members to the Tribe.
Brian Absher in Florida has a new Maple.
Chuck Wallace fron Atlanta has a Walnut, and an engraved Maple Chief. Both new.

Welcome...and thanks.

Hey Sonny, RE, Spike and all!
My band is flying out Wednesday morning to Colorado Springs to play a gig at the Broadmoor Hotel on Thursday. Five Star, baby! It's a private event/conference and the planner wanted us. Should be a hoot!

I've got to check my instruments. Fortunately they've got Calton cases. Question: Should I loosen the strings a little and remove the bridge for the flight?

Hope all is well,

RayD - Posted - 04/19/2010:  19:49:15

Hey Stan! Congratulations on the gig. All the best to you and the band. We'll all be interested to hear how things went. I'll be interested to find out if the altitude affects your Chief banjo any.

Cheers,

RayD

Banjo Stan - Posted - 04/20/2010:  03:55:12

Hey Ray,
I'm more worried about how the altitude affects my endurance and breath control for singing. Last time I was in Colorado Springs I was 17 years old, a cadet at the US Air Force Academy and had a 27 inch waist. Best shape of my life; but still remember how winded I used to get running up and down those hills in Basic Training.

RayD - Posted - 04/20/2010:  16:23:02

Stan,

I understand on the breath control and endurance. Just take it easy and don't be a wild man on the stage and you should be O.K.! And if its any consolation, you STILL have that 27 inch waist - its just been fortified.......

Cheers,
RayD

Banjo Stan - Posted - 04/20/2010:  17:39:17

That's right Ray!
I'm twice the man I used to be!!LOL!

RayD - Posted - 04/20/2010:  18:17:46

Well said Stan!
Good luck on that trip......

Cheers,

RayD

World tour is over.....back to my day job. It was a blast!
They want us to play for them again next year...In Orlando at Disney World!
Not exactly the Broadmoor, but I think I could manage to put some mouse ears on my cowboy hat:)

Woolpersteve - Posted - 04/26/2010:  07:09:54

Stan, All of the checked instruments were unharmed , then?

Banjo Stan - Posted - 04/26/2010:  09:37:17

Yeah Steve,
I did have a note from TSA saying they inspected the guitar and banjo.
They were fine.

notetaker75 - Posted - 04/26/2010:  11:15:51

Stan...The guy at TSA was probably a banjo player that wanted to know what you had packed in the case..LOL....Monty

RayD - Posted - 04/26/2010:  16:33:29

Stan,

Well, I can't say that I blame the TSA for inspecting your banjo - after all, the Chief banjo is a killer!

Cheers,
RayD

Sonny ,
In between constantly delivering new Chief banjos did you get finished painting the truck?
Steve

The Pope - Posted - 04/28/2010:  12:03:23

When I worked for TSA, I always kept my eye open for banjos. Sacramento has this jazz festival once a year but the banjoists were always 4-string players but I met a few 5-stringers as well...

TheChief - Posted - 04/29/2010:  10:08:36

Steve that truck is painted..with brush..but the radio installation was another thing..oh the pain..but it's my truck (28 years) and I love it!!!

Yeah..I'm OK but there is a whole lot of devestation in this area. All over Nashville streets and roads are, and have been closed. Some are still. The athletic parks and fields here in Hendersonville are completely destroyed and the sad part of that is that so many people have worked so hard for the past few years to make this system one of the best in the state.
But that's minor compared to the losses people have suffered..homes, belongings, cars, etc. and a few lives were lost. I've been here since 1964 and this is the worst I've seen.
I've heard people comparing this with Katrina but tell me please, how can one compare disasters?
We'll survive though..God willing...we always do somehow.

Thanks to all who asked and are concerned.

Yes, it is good to hear from you Sonny. And you're absolutely correct - you cannot compare disasters. No sense in doing that either - a disaster is a disaster. Period. Our thoughts and prayers are with all.

Thank all of you again for your concern. My house is good..safe. Nashville is in one big mess. A lot of people lost everything..I mean everything.

Sonny, did you play the Stelling on the recording of Dandylion?...Thats a really nice piece of music.

TheChief - Posted - 05/20/2010:  16:29:56

No..the Granada. I never recorded with the Stelling. My agreement with Geoff was that I would take it with me when I had to fly, which I did.

All Chiefs are now nickle plated?

TheChief - Posted - 05/21/2010:  05:49:27

Gold is so expensive that I would need to raise the standard price of the gold Chief..which was standard. Until something breaks, the Chief (standard) will be Nickel hardware with Gold tone ring.
Same price as before with same standard package..Price case, Elliott capo, tacks at 7,8,9, and 10th frets, Charlie Cushman set up, Dogwood Designs leather professional strap.
I'll have pictures of the new banjo as soon as possible.

I will say this on the Gold subject..Steve Huber is doing some good gold plating and I'm trying to decide whether it would be practical to have a "special order" gold Chief with Steve doing the plating. We might go that route.

WE WILL SEE.

Sonny
Wanted to say what a great banjo the Mahogany Chief is that I got from you at Nash Camp last year is. I guess I need to get a walnut from you some time to round out my quiver of chiefs. Anyway thanks again to you and Frank for building such a great instrument.
I was planning on coming to camp again this year, but there's a chance of a business conflict. I was hoping to have you sign a remo head that I got with Earl's signature, at one of his concerts. Any chance I could mail it to you if I can't make it to camp?
Thanks again
and all the best to you
Jay Hall
