What is this foreign instrument?

Wednesday, December 15, 2010

I have seen this odd instrument and was wondering what it was..

It is about 23 inches long, has three strings, and oddly, sound holes in the back.

It resembles a miniture dobro... with the exeption that it has a snakeskin head.

It has a brand on the headstock, but it is in Chinese.

I have absolutely no clue as to what it is... Any guesses?

Player of many instruments, in fact, there has not been an instrument I have come upon yet that I haven't taught myself to play yet. Never had a music lesson in my life, yet I taught myself to play instruments, read music, write music, improvise, and play with others. I am known well for the fact that I am a quite coordinated musician and a creator of instruments at my local jams, luthier shops, etc. I am also in apprenticeship to become a luthier, and many of my instruments I have restored myself. I am also a quite gifted artist and continue to do custom work for people, as well as on instruments that I repair and sell. I do not own an instrument that is under twenty years old. I am into antique instruments and music. I play old-time, Celtic, and much bluegrass and "old time" country. My love for music has brought me this far, and I hope it will take me all the way.
