Thank God for Generators and Kind Souls

Saturday, December 20, 2008

A big ice storm hit northeast Indiana where I now live. I moved up here to Fort Wayne a year and a half ago after living most of my life in Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia. Leave it to say, I was not prepared for the tough, tough winters here in the upper Midwest.

So this storm has knocked out power just about everywhere. Luckily, when I bought this house, which sits back in the woods, it came equipped with a natural-gas generator, which is powering the house right now as I type.

Unluckily, a very large tree fell on the house early Friday morning, with a 10-foot limb piercing the roof and the interior ceiling. Sounded like a bomb going off. Essentially, I had a giant spear in my living room. No one was hurt. Workers return today to remove the tree from my house.

Once yesterday, our road was blocked by fallen trees but neighborhood volunteers quickly cleared it with chain saws. Once yesterday, my wife got stuck but strangers came to her rescue. I wouldn't have doubted if one of the good Samaritans was a banjo player.

It's still wild and wooly out there, so I'll be hunkering down in the mancave this weekend with the banjos, probably to the ire of the Missus. She'll have to understand that yard cleanup will have to wait until the ice is off the tree limbs. But I feel blessed and lucky.  Merry Christmas, everyone.
