The Amazing Speed-Upper!

The Amazing Speed-Upper
or
Loopy Dan Levenson

[For an audio example podcast of how I did this, go to my music page and listen to "Amazing Speed Upper."]

Today I did something pretty cool with two pieces of software and Dan Levenson's free fiddle versions of OTFTCHB.  Jackie taught me "Cuffy" at Clifftop, but I was having a hard time keeping the fiddle line in my head.  I noticed that it's in Dan's book.  After some monkeying around, I now have an up-to-speed, continuous loop of the fiddle part for "Cuffy."  Here's how I did it.

  1. I used PolderBits to shave off the "potatoes" at the beginning of the fiddle track.  I carefully trimmed the beginning and end to be just the A and B part.
  2. I loaded the new, shortened version of Dan's "Cuffy" into the Amazing Slow Downer and used it to actually speed up the tune.  It sounds good to me at 128% of speed (remember that Dan is playing these tunes pretty slowly so you can hear what he's doing).
  3. I checked the "LOOP" box in ASD and there you go.  A continuous loop of "Cuffy."  I can play along or just let it drum into my head.  "Cuffy" has a pretty odd B part, so I often like to just hum these and drill them into my subconscious.

Favorite Bands/Musicians:
I enjoy most music. My banjo interest is exclusively old-timey, and that's why I joined this site. I love the Skillet Lickers, Uncle Dave Macon, Earl Johnson and the Clodhoppers, the New Lost City Ramblers, and the Holy Modal Rounders. My favorite banjo players are Fred Cockerham, Tommy Jarrell, Bob Carlin, Paul Brown, Joel Mabus, Bruce Molsky, and all kinds of others. I'm also a HUGE fan of Curtis Eller's American Circus. Curtis is one of my oldest pals in the world, and the first banjo player I ever met.

I play clawhammer banjo, as well as flatpick some guitar and string bass. I love country fiddle tunes and songs along the lines of the 1920s and 1930s "old-time" and "hillbilly" recordings by The Skillet Lickers, The Carter Family, Uncle Dave Macon, Earl Johnson, The Stripling Bros, etc. I'm not actively playing banjo these days, and my presence here is kind of inactive. I'll always keep my banjo, though, and you can bet I'll be back here some day.
