dogs now are more of a companion than anything for most folks, but they can still have a job around the house, herding / fetching/ hunting/ trailing.  a dog makes a better companion ( in my opinion) when it goes out and does something with you.    about the same as people, just being around is OK, but when you get together and do something it's better
