I just got my favorite telephone call.
I was asked if I wanted to come over for ribs, pie and Scrabble about 1 mile from here.
I always answer in the affirmative when asked that question.

The lady of the house is an excellent fiddler from the Gaspe along with being a carver of wood and stone and a sketching/painting artist. And great cook!

Big fat sweet sausages on the grill with foil packet potatoes.

We were gonna make pizza, but Bob suggested grilling so we wouldn't heat up the house. I thought it was a good call!

Sunday evening, a summer salad-with grill shrimp. Paired with a bottle of Kansas, Frontenac Pinot gris, which was surprisingly good.
Salad had: tomatoes (crappy), English cucumbers, green part of scallion, an Anaheim pepper, toasted sesame seed, and a rice vinegar-evoo vinegarette, and other stuff. A stick of grilled shrimp on top. Brad

Just got home from camping someplace We’ve never been and it’s less than 2 hours away from home. We camped on the shores of Lake Superior in Grand Marais, Michigan. Besides hiking , rock picking and sightseeing, we managed to eat some damn fine camping food, but treated ourselves to a night out in town at a local pub that served up a Whitefish basket that was caught in local waters and as fresh as it gets!!! My compliments to Lake Superior for  producing beautiful fish and to the chef that didn’t ruin it and kept it simple!!!
Slammer!!!

The Mrs. once again made the sweet and sour spareribs from the grade 6 religion teacher's manual from the Eighties, on a bed of rice. Dessert: strawberry-rhubarb pie with lots of vanilla ice cream.

For breakfast I made a blackberry-raspberry milkshake. It filled the mug (not a little coffee mug) three times before I could finish it.

We are eating a lot salads lately. More shrimp with cucumber , tomato and many other ingredients, with home made dressing as well. I have been low-carbing (again) now on week 9. And trying to much more vegetation along with the proteins this time around. Brad

Yesterday was cloudy with a few sprinkles. Light rain overnight. We needed it! Felt like a good day to run the oven! Pot roast!

Put a nice crust on a bottom round roast & diced up carrots, celery, onions & garlic. A can of canned cherry tomatoes, beef stock, red wine, bay leaves & fresh rosemary, thyme & sage tied up with string,

Fresh linguine noodles & we'll split a whole wheat bun. There's salad too but I like to concentrate on the main event! Oven temp was 300 when I put it in 3 & half hours ago. Waiting until it falls apart with a nice beefy gravy!

Love ham steaks! An old Buddy & roommate when we were in our 20s was good cook & a waiter. We were at a butcher shop he knew in town & he got the guy to cut a 2" ham steak off the leg! Game changer with grilled pineapple rings out of a can on top!

We'd pick a nice roast & get it cut into steaks to cook under the broiler. Baked potatoes or baby potatoes onions & garlic in a foil packet! You could split a 2 bedroom & party pretty good working for $15 an hour!

I used to cook almost every night when I could afford my own place. The Joy Of Cooking was found in the back of a cupboard. Between that & a few calls to my Mom I learned how to cook Christmas dinner for my friends!

A good one on my regular bachelor survival menu was pork butt steaks simmered in mushroom soup, onions, garlic & beer. Uncle Bens rice on the side with a can of corn. Made 2 meals . Same thing tomorrow. Made my own lunches but the "Gut Wagon" actually had some good stuff!

I always had a gas grill out the back door. (still do) Less dishes. Rented a little house in cool neighborhood. I was cooking a steak with my hunting knife, a loaf of french bread,a hunk of cheese & a beer. My old retired neighbour came over to bum a beer! We'd cut off a piece of steak, put some cheese on & jam it on a piece of toasted bread. Couple Hobos down by the stockyards!

Raised in the Midwest, 50s era, food was rather bland & unexciting, excepting holidays @ Grandma's house.
California changed that. I'm doing Cajun tonight, with an East Indian side, washed down with a good wine.
