This is a recording from a live gig at Brickhouse Pizza in Spartanburg, SC on July 22, 2012. This is our take on this cool tune by the late great Jerry Reed and sung here by Wes Wyatt, also on guitar. I'm picking 5-string. Thanks to Jamison Smith for capturing the gig from the main board to his laptop.

This is an original instrumental composed by my friend Bob Key who is playing mandolin on this clip. Bob Key grew up and still lives in Glendale, SC only a few miles from Converse, SC where Bobby Thompson grew up, and thew were childhood friends. Bob remained friends and visited Bobby often after he became well established in the Nashville music scene. Anyway, Bob composed this cool instrumental honoring his friend Bobby Thompson, and I spent a little time learning the melodic runs Bob came up with on mandolin to mimic how he felt Bobby would have played something like this. It's a very fun tune to pick. This recording was made using my Zoom H2 in my living room on August 20, 2015, just me (banjo), Bob Key (mandolin) and Dickie Brown (guitar) noodling around on some tunes. This little self-contained nugget is worth sharing I think. So here ya go, BHO — the world premier of this cool tune dedicated to Bobby Thompson. I hope you enjoy :)

This is an instrumental take on Jim Croce's tune. This was recorded as part of some basement grunge tapes made with Kent Bilbry in Knoxville, TN sometime in 2008. I recorded the banjo then Kent dropped in other instruments a few weeks later as he was learning about his new digital recorder. A bit sloppy, this was never meant to be anything other than a scratch track but thought I'd share it here. I have never found any musicians willing to work this up with me, having been told this is basically a gag-and-choke crappy song. I disagree. I always liked the tune myself. I hope you do too.

This is a tune which I posted to BHO almost two years ago to the week. The version I posted earlier was an instrumental take on this cool tune by Jim Croce. About 4 or 5 years ago a friend of mine in Knoxville, Kent Bilbry, bought an 8-track digital recorder and I spent a day or two over there laying down about 20 raw tunes, just banjo and a tick track, so he could learn how to use his new machine. Time in a Bottle was one of the tunes I laid down. At that time, Kent gave me a rough CD of several tunes I had laid down -- and I have posted the mix he had done at that time, which was an instrument-only version. I didn't know until this weekend (Jan 14, 2012) that he had gone on to rework some of the tracks, and he had added the vocals to this tune. This started only as me picking banjo to a tick track, then I overdubbed a 2nd banjo part and later on Kent added some bass, mandolin, and lead vocal. It helps flesh out the recording a lot nicer, although it ain't half bad as an instrumental. This was a treat for me to hear yesterday for the first time, I hope it is a treat for you too. Enjoy. :)

I was finding a few treasures on my cheap digital voice recorder I carry around with me. This cut is from a session just hanging out around with Al Osteen in his teaching studio on March 8, 2010, just a sliver of the afternoon spent there. I hope you enjoy. This is Al Osteen playing banjo, not me.

I realized I've never posted a cut of Whiskey Before Breakfast. This is a fun tune to play and I have quite a few variations I've come up with over the years, This is just this moment's version :) but it seemed nice and relaxed yet energetic, so I thought I'd share this one too. What the heck. It's only electrons which sound like music LOL. This is the last cut from this practice session that I'm going to post this time around, I don't want to wear you guys out. There will probably be some more select cuts posted from future practice sessions or gigs, it remains to be seen I suppose :) this band is just taking shape. Recorded 3/3/2016 in Glendale SC at band practice. Me on banjo, Dickie on guitar and CJ on bass. I hope youenjoy.

Here's another cut from living room jam sessions in March and April 2011. This is a quick take on Béla Fleck's "Whitewater" -- another cool (and attainable) Fleck tune. I had just bought the tab (yeah I know, 20 years late LOL) and was bouncing these tunes off Tyler, a guitar-picking buddy, as I was trying to learn them. Me picking my Nechville Athena, and Tyler on his Santa Cruz dreadnought. Enjoy.

This is just me diddling around with this cool tune by John Loudermilk. Nothing fancy here, my take on this thing, all the pieces of the puzzle are there for the 3-part tune. It's fun to play and jam to with a like-minded musician and to work it a little tighter... For what it's worth, I hope you enjoy.
