Ok I'm almost finished with these posts from this jam session... This was 5 friends jamming in Knoxville on the well known Bill Monroe instrumental Jerusalem Ridge which is a fun, haunting tune to pick. This cut is pretty long, almost 6 minutes. We got into "the groove" apparently! This recording captured my first version of this tune back then (6 years ago), I hope to be recording my current take on this tune. This tune definitely lends itself to some pretty banjo work... Recorded at a Knoxville, TN jam session 12-27-06 in Bob Holmes' living room on a digital recorder with pickers in a circle. Nice relaxed picking... Frank Eastes (banjo) Bob Holmes (guitar), Jim Lethgo (guitar), Marvin Gideon (mandolin) and Dennis Wilkerson (bass) ... thanks to Bob Holmes for the recording. We were all sitting in a circle with a digital recorder on the floor. The banjo is a little soft in the blend, I think the recorder was aimed away from the banjo LOL, but it's in there enough. In memory of Marvin Gideon

A cool traditional instrumental. Recorded at a Knoxville, TN jam session 12-27-06 in Bob Holmes' living room on a digital recorder with pickers in a circle. Nice relaxed picking... One of 17 cuts from some awesome campfire picking March 13, 2021 up in Ellenboro, NC. Last time I picked with the lead guitar picker was about 8 years ago, it's nice when things click like this. Jamey Harrison (guitar and vocal), Frank Eastes (banjo) and Tyler Leonard (lead guitar).

Wow this tune was buried in a stack of living room recordings made back in November 2009. This is me and a guitar picking buddy, Tyler Balkind, playing this cool tune by Don Devaney and made popular by The Osbourn Brothers. This was recorded on a cheap digital recorder, so it's very hot. It's just me and Tyler breezing through songs, so it is what it is. But, it's a cool tune, an interesting take on it I wanted to share... In this recording, Tyler is singing lead and I'm playing my top tension 5-string banjo. I hope you enjoy :)

Recorded Mar 29, 2011 in my living room, using Tyler's new Zoom recorder. For practice and educational use only. Our take on this traditional song. As these are practice tracks, expect a few mistakes or occasional fumbling, and a little conversation going on too. We were laying these down one after another to learn each other's material. I'm sharing a few select tracks here which I think are cool takes on these tunes ... some fun listening just the same. For what it's worth, enjoy... I am playing my Nechville Athena banjo; Tyler is playing his Santa Cruz guitar.

This is a nice song that was written by my friend Wes Wyatt and his friend Doug Trammel. This is a recording from a live gig at Brickhouse Pizza in Spartanburg, SC on July 22, 2012. Wes Wyatt on guitar and vocal. I'm picking 5-string. Thanks to Jamison Smith for capturing the gig from the main board to his laptop.

Unfortunately, the cassette tape ended about a minute into this tune, but it's enough to get the idea :) D. Stout (bass, lead vocal), David Perkins (guitar, harmony), Frank Eastes (banjo, harmony). In this cut, David's wife Shelley adds some harmony vocals and Monroe was sitting out. Recorded at practice January 1991 in David Perkin's living room, Knoxville, TN. Practice Tape (c) Frank Eastes

This is a great contemporary bluegrass tune written by Allen Mills. This recording was made in March 2011 at (now defunct) band practice. The lineup is: Me (on my custom top-tension banjo) and harmony vocal, Shane Lail on guitar and harmony vocal, Keith Cole on upright bass, David Heavner on mandolin, and George Giddons on fiddle and lead vocal. Recorded on a cheap digital voice recorder, so it's a tad hot. This is a cool snapshot of the organic process of how tunes are worked up in a band. Enjoy!

Recorded at practice January 1991 in David Perkin's living room, Knoxville, TN. Practice Tape (c) Frank Eastes. This track was at the end of the cassette tape so is cut off at the end... I had pretty much forgotten about the melodic lead I came up with so it's nice to hear it again :)

This is a great tune by Merle Haggard, as don by our band "Fayssoux McLean and The Bluegrass Messengers" at band practice May 24, 2012. We were just sitting around a conference room table laying these down in one take each. Fayssoux McLean guitar and harmony vocal; Wes Wyatt lead guitar and lead vocal; Steve Garret on bass and harmony vocal; Frank Eastes on banjo and harmony vocal. These folks are a true joy to play with. I hope you enjoy.

Here's another living room jam gem I'm dusting off. I just found this CD of a jam from November 2009 and am posting a few from it. This is me and a guitar picking buddy, Tyler Balkind, playing this cool song Man in The Middle by Tom Harley Campbell and made popular by The Stanley Brothers. This was recorded on a cheap digital recorder, so it's very hot. It's just me and Tyler breezing through songs, so it is what it is. But, it's a cool tune, an interesting take on it I wanted to share... In this recording, Tyler is singing lead and I'm playing my top tension 5-string banjo and singing baritone. I hope you enjoy :)
