This is another Fleck tune I love. Now go easy on me. I had just purchased the tab a month before this recording (yeah I know, the tab came out 20 years go, I'm a little slow). I'm uploading two versions of this cool tune. This was recorded in March 2011. Unfortunately, this band split up before the first gig but we're all in contact with each other and there is always talk.... The lineup is: Me (on my custom top-tension banjo), Shane Lail on guitar, Keith Cole on upright bass. David Heavner on mandolin, and George (cannot remember last name) on fiddle. Also check out the living room version I've uploaded... Enjoy!

I'm uploading two versions of this cool tune. In this version I completely butcher the 2nd break but hey, the tune must go on LOL. This was recorded in April 2011. Me with my Nechville Athena, and Tyler Balkind on his Santa Cruz dreadnought. It's funny how I'm trying to explain the ending to Tyler. I listen to it now and I'm confused hahahaha. Also check out the band practice version I've uploaded... Enjoy!

A fiddle-playing friend from Michigan who I haven't seen in 4 years is back in the area doing contract work (he's a nuclear engineer) and he's been dying to pick music. Four years ago we would jam together about one every week or two, and I had pretty much forgotten what we even picked together!! Anyway, Don Calsyn came by my house last Wednesday, and I turned on the recorder and let it go. Out of the couple of hours of audio, I pulled out a few clips that ain't half bad. This clip is raw, unedited and live in my living room last Wednesday, November 18, 2015. Two instruments can really make a lot of nice music together. This is our noodling around with "Soldier's Joy."

I'm still dusting off some of these cool old jam session recordings... This is probably the only banjo "love song" I'm aware of ... this great tune written by Carl Jackson ... and this is a realistic tempo too!! I promise I won't wear you guys out with these old recordings ... but a few of these have a real nice feel to them, and the feedback I've been getting has encouraged me to post a few more for that jam session... Recorded at a Knoxville, TN jam session 12-27-06 in Bob Holmes' living room on a digital recorder with pickers in a circle. Nice relaxed picking... Frank Eastes (banjo) Bob Holmes (guitar), Jim Lethgo (guitar), Marvin Gideon (mandolin) and Dennis Wilkerson (bass) ... thanks to Bob Holmes for the recording. We were all sitting in a circle with a digital recorder on the floor. The banjo is a little soft in the blend, I think the recorder was aimed away from the banjo LOL, but it's in there enough. In memory of Marvin Gideon

A cool traditional instrumental. Recorded at a Knoxville, TN jam session 12-27-06 in Bob Holmes' living room on a digital recorder with pickers in a circle. Nice relaxed picking... Frank Eastes (banjo) Bob Holmes (guitar), Jim Lethgo (guitar), Marvin Gideon (mandolin) who you also hear naming the chords for the guitar players, and Dennis Wilkerson (bass) ... thanks to Bob Holmes for the recording. Posted in memory of Marvin Gideon, my good friend, rest in peace.

I had originally uploaded this cut last May 2011, but only just now realized that there was a "choice" word that slipped through in the version I had uploaded. Oops. My bad. This is a family website so I have made a quick edit and posted the cleaner, G-rated version in its place LOL. Oh well, thus is the nature of jam sessions. Recorded sometime early-mid April 2011 in Tyler's living room, with Tyler's Zoom recorder. For practice and educational use only. Frank Eastes (me) on banjo. Tyler Balkind guitar. I'm playing my Nechville Athena banjo.

I know, I know, I've uploaded several versions of this tune before ... but I just love this instrumental. This is a relaxed version, recorded in one take at band practice May 31, 2012. Frank Eastes on banjo; Fayssoux McLean and Wes Wyatt on guitars; Steve Garrett on bass. I really love the calypso beat Steve adds to the tune at just the right times. I hope you enjoy :)

This is a cool instrumental I learned from Dan X Padgett in Spartanburg, back in 1978. This is one of the first instrumental tunes I ever learned and I've loved playing it ever since. This was recorded at a living room jam session last week, on May 2, 2012. Me on banjo, my brother Kevin Eastes on bass and Wes Wyatt on guitar. Kevin lives in Portland, OR, 3,500 miles away, so I don't get to pick with him much. Wish he lived closer... For what it's worth, I hope you enjoy :)

Yet another upload from me of this cool instrumental. Recorded March 11, 2021 at a small jam session in Mooresboro, NC on the Broad River. Me (Frank Eastes) on banjo, Neal Boynton on Guitar and John Roberts on bass. This tune is fun to play and fun to hear, I hope you enjoy. Relaxed no frills picking.

About 4 or 5 years ago a friend of mine in Knoxville, Kent Bilbry, bought an 8-track digital recorder and I spent a day or two over there laying down about 20 raw tunes, just banjo and a tick track, so he could learn how to use his new machine. A few of these "basement" recordings are already posted to my BHO home page, but just this weekend (January 14th 2012) I learned that Kent had gone on and re-worked several of those tunes years ago, and I was surprised and delighted to hear many of these tunes I had totally forgotten about. This is one of those tunes I have almost forgotten knowing, and had also completely forgotten that I had worked up a twin banjo part for it. You know, if you don't use it, you lose it!! So it was great to hear this again, and I wanted to share this tune here. It was fun. On this cut, I overdubbed a 2nd banjo track. All this was done in one take each. Kent then later added bass, mandolin chops and rhythym guitar to it and mixed down what I'm posting here.

Recorded sometime in March 2011 in my living room, using Tyler's new Zoom recorder. For practice and educational use only. Our take on this cool tune by John Hartford, as an instrumental. I'm sharing a few cool tunes you don't see jammed on much ... some fun listening just the same. For what it's worth, enjoy... I am playing my Nechville Athena banjo; Tyler is playing his Santa Cruz guitar.

Another tune recorded late one evening while playing around with Kent Bilbrey's new digital recorder. I was messing around with John Hartford's classic song which is nice as an instrumental too (well, since I can't really sing lead). This was recorded banjo only, then Kent dropped in the other tracks a few weeks later as he was learning how to use his recorder. Kent is stepping all over me in this recording, but what ya gonna do? Basement grunge tapes. LOL. Kinda sloppy but still pretty interesting... Thanks, Kent! This was fun. If I ever make a cleaner recording of this I'll replace this one. Enjoy.

Since none of us knew the words to this John Hartford tune, we picked it as an instrumental... One of 17 cuts from some awesome campfire picking March 13, 2021 up in Ellenboro, NC. Last time I picked with the lead guitar picker was about 8 years ago, it's nice when things click like this. Frank Eastes (banjo) and Tyler Leonard (lead guitar).
