This is the most recent tune I was working on, at the request of the guitar player I pick with. He had just bought a pristine copy of the album "Poor Richard's Almanac" off eBay, and wanted me to work up the tune "Poor Richard's Blues" off that album. This is a recording I made on my cell phone to email to Wes, the guitar picker. Since it's a cheap cell phone the quality is not all that great and my cell phone limits recordings to 1 minute. But, it's enough to get the idea of my treatment of the tune. The tune has two parts, and a bridge, which I didn't get to in my recording. The tune is in the key of Gm but I am playing in standard G tuning gDGBD. For what it is, I hope you enjoy :)

Another cut jamming with guitarist Tyler Leonard on April 19, 2021. My version of this Pete Wernick tune from the Country Cooking album way back when...

Recorded sometime in March 2011 in my living room, using Tyler's new Zoom recorder. For practice and educational use only. Our take on this cool tune by Pete Wernick. I'm sharing a few cool tunes you don't hear too much ... some fun listening just the same. For what it's worth, enjoy... I am playing my Nechville Athena banjo; Tyler is playing his Santa Cruz guitar.

This is another take on this cool tune. Recorded sometime in 2007 or 2008 by Kent Bilbry in Knoxville, TN. This started as me picking to a tick track, the I overdubbed a 2nd banjo part, then Kent went on and added some drums, and mandolin chops, and a little guitar I think. Enjoy

This is a beautiful song written by Skip Ewing and Don Sampson and recorded by Brian White. This was recorded in March 2011 at (now defunct) band practice. The lineup is: Me (on my custom top-tension banjo) and harmony vocal, Shane Lail on guitar and lead vocal, Keith Cole on upright bass, David Heavner on mandolin, and George Giddons on fiddle and harmony vocal. Enjoy!

Just my quick take on this cool old fiddle tune. This is two banjos, one serving as a drone bagpipe-like rhythm backup ... tons of fun to play.

Recorded Mar 29, 2011 in my living room, using Tyler's new Zoom recorder. For practice and educational use only. This is our take on this cool song by Gordon Lightfoot. This is the final in a series of jam recordings I made with a guitar picking buddy, Tyler Balkind. This is me picking on my Nechville Athena and Tyler is picking his Santa Cruz dreadnought and singing lead. I apologize in advance for my lousy singing, but hey, this is banjohangout, not baritone-singer-hangout LOL. Enjoy.

I'm still dusting off some of these cool old jam session recordings... This is a cool pedal steel tune "Remington Ride" by Herb Remington ... and this is a realistic tempo too!! I promise I won't wear you guys out with these old recordings ... this is the last cut from this jam session I'm posting ... but a few of these have a real nice feel to them, and the feedback I've been getting has encouraged me to post a few more for that jam session... Recorded at a Knoxville, TN jam session 12-27-06 in Bob Holmes' living room on a digital recorder with pickers in a circle. Nice relaxed picking... Frank Eastes (banjo) Bob Holmes (guitar), Jim Lethgo (guitar), Marvin Gideon (mandolin) and Dennis Wilkerson (bass) ... thanks to Bob Holmes for the recording. We were all sitting in a circle with a digital recorder on the floor. The banjo is a little soft in the blend, I think the recorder was aimed away from the banjo LOL, but it's in there enough. In memory of Marvin Gideon

This is a very cool tune by Kelly Rowland and made popular by John Conlee. It sure takes a banjo well... This was recorded at a living room jam session May 2, 2012. Me on banjo, Wes Wyatt on guitar and lead vocal, and my brother Kevin Eastes on bass. This is the last recording that I could get from that relaxed jam. I apologize in advance for the vocals. Us three have never sung together and my brother and Kevin and I sing in the same range, apparently, so we were both compensating ... but it does get better lol. I'm uploading it for the banjo anyway LOL. Kevin lives 3,500 miles away in Portland, OR, is a fantastic bass player, and it's always fun to make music with him. I wish he were closer. If I can get a better recoding of this tune in the future I'll post it too. For now, for what it's worth, enjoy :) We jammed for about 3 hours last week in Wes' living room. He recorded most of it, I think. I hope to post a few select cuts soon. We'll see...

One of 17 cuts from some awesome campfire picking March 13, 2021 up in Ellenboro, NC. Last time I picked with the lead guitar picker was about 8 years ago, it's nice when things click like this. Frank Eastes (banjo) and Tyler Leonard (lead guitar).

I uploaded this yesterday but was decided I could do better. This new version is cleaner overall and I added a bass line (banjo down 1 octave in post production)

Recorded Mar 29, 2011 in my living room, using Tyler's new Zoom recorder. For practice and educational use only. Our take on this cool song written by Gordon Lightfoot. This is based on Tony Rice's arrangement. As these are practice tracks, expect a few mistakes or occasional fumbling, and a little conversation going on too. We were laying these down one after another to learn each other's material. I'm sharing a few select tracks here which I think are cool takes on these tunes ... some fun listening just the same. For what it's worth, enjoy... I am playing my Nechville Athena banjo; Tyler is playing his Santa Cruz guitar.

This was a treat to find on my hard drive. I've uploaded another version of this tune in the past, but this one is a nice relaxed cut of the tune by Gordon Lightfoot. Apparently we did more than one take on this tune, which I didn't remember until I found this again:) So I thought I'd share it here. This was recorded sometime between March and June 2011. Tyler Balkind on guitar and lead vocal, me on banjo.

This is a great tune by Merle Haggard, as don by our band "Fayssoux McLean and The Bluegrass Messengers" at band practice May 24, 2012. We were just sitting around a conference room table laying these down in one take each. Fayssoux McLean lead vocal and guitar; Wes Wyatt lead guitar; Steve Garret on bass and harmony vocal; Frank Eastes on banjo and harmony vocal. These folks are a true joy to play with. I hope you enjoy.
