Where have I been lately? For any of you who are curious I have been away for most of a year and a half. That's ever since a horrible wildfire burned up my community along with 76,000 acres around here on Cobb Mountain, California. My own house actually survived but only along with 19 others out of 195!- 2 people died in my neighborhood. 1,300 homes burned up during the "Valley Fire"... So, it has been quite a disruption to everyone's lives around here. Turns out it was the 3rd worst wildfire in California history!
Musically though, I really haven't skipped a beat. I am still playing the fiddle and banjo. Visit my old time string band's website and say hello if you like.... www.cobbstompers.com.

My banjo music is inspired by the sounds that have been heard for generations in a place where the corners of Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia merge...? But, I am a born-and-raised Northern Californian! Embarrassing to admit, I started playing banjo after seeing the movie "Deliverance". I took a few bluegrass lessons and after a very long and determined couple of months I could play a recognizable “Cripple Creek”. Later, attending UC Davis, my "Banjo Hangout" was in the library where there was an amazing music archives listening room. I would make recordings of the weirdest stuff (mostly County Records)! I tried to wrap my head around the bluesy sounds of fellers like Dock Boggs. I would listen to them dang tapes over and over and over and over in my old ford pick-up truck (they kind of went together). Hey, I have played off and on for a pretty long time. But, I have really been playing a lot lately, especially after somehow several years ago I talked my wife into playing the fiddle with me. You see, she is a serious pianist, and local symphony flute player, has degree in music. Playing old time music with her banjo playing husband seemed unlikely until, … at some point, I think my wife thought old-time music might be an antidote to being a little too serious about music, it might be a fun family thing, and she was sick of my nagging. Well, I couldn’t believe how easy it was for her to pick up the fiddle out of the blue. She just started sawing out some dancing tunes just like that- those music majors! It was no time till we had a band! We got a little girl ten years old who is already dang good on the fiddle.
