I subscribe to Sportsnet,, basic coverage, and for whatever reason I get all Bruins home games without paying for an “upgrade”,, same with Penguins, Calgary, Edmonton, and some Maple Laff, Vegas, Flyers, and other assorted games, & very few Canadiens or Blackhawks home games,,, grrr.  It’s hit&miss,, can’t figure their reasoning.

Let's see now  how far behind the times are we?   Slap Shot  = 40 years ?? .... DC/MD = at least another 40??  Bettman = 20?  Ziegler = 10?  Had those << things not happened the game probably wouldn't be recognizable.   devil  [Fwiw, the next time I see SS will be the first time.]

Maybe when this post hits 100 pages the title can be changed to "Bobby Orr signs with the Blackhawks."

I don't follow things as closely as I used to, so I can't be specific, but I figure that must be at least a couple of teams whose defense would be improved by signing Orr.   wink

Next chapter,,,
Bedard gets checked skating into the OZ, cracks his face on the defenceman’s shoulder, bleeding, out for the game. Blackhawks get riled up,
Foligno fights the guy later, then they check and bully Hughes, the Devils’ star,, mayhem at The Rock…

It's ^^ on, and I'm paying it my usual amount of (in)attention, but the raised voices [Pang??] got my attention.  While the check on Bedard was solid enuff to "get his attention," what was the injury? [And don't tell me "upper body"!!!]   And from my perspective scrapping in retaliation for a clean check should be penalized in addition to what's normally handed out. [But so far they're not beating a path to my door to  seek my advice. sad ]

It’s yer “ code”, ain’t it? No running around going after star players…
But, yes, I’ve been decrying that bs for a while now myself. It’s only cuz he’s the young superstar,, anybody else & not much would’ve happened. I think I saw big Megna, the new cop on the block, hiding under the bench….

My code????  Where'd that come from?!?!?!

My code is in regards to a) players who start skating around like the owned the place,* and b) stuff that's against the rules, but that the refs choose to turn a blind eye to.

* = hot-dogging it, rubbing it in, showing-off [generally after getting a few goals up]... nuthin' to do with star players.

I just hear that Foligno "...has been ruled out for the remainder of this game," but didn't hear the reasoning.

Edit:  As you probably know, I can't  speak from direct experience in high level 'ockey .... it seems more evident at intermediate/senior levels than pro, but  .... ???

Playing intermediate for Red Lake Rockets in ‘73 against the Dryden Dukes,, ChrisPronger’s old man cross-checked me from behind, I blacked out for a few seconds, he got a 5 minute major,, I recovered and scored on the PP. He was running around like he owned the rink,, the refs weren’t buying his antics…
You think Semenko, McSorley, Wensink, & co. thought they “ owned the rink” ? Sometimes the policemen become the dictators….

Were Semenko, McSorley, Wensink & Co.  "hot-dogging it, rubbing it in, showing-off [generally after getting a few goals up]"?   We seem to be on different wave lengths as to what "own the rink" means... as for the guys you mention, I think they knew there was likely an opponent who would keep them from getting too far out of line.... each doing what they were hired for. The guys who played the style  I mentioned showed a distinct change in their approach to the game after they got several goals ahead.   Dunno about CP's pop, but I don't think that was the the case for the NHLers you mention.

And speaking of cross-check in the back,  one time I took one that caused four or five distinct "clicks" down my spine... other than afterwards not being able to lift my elbows above shoulder level, and not being able to throw a ball overhand for about two years ....   .

Fun times, no??  yes

Edit: In the yocal senior league I noticed that the "own the place" antics were much more likely to come from guys who peaked at, or maybe were marginal players at Junior "A" than the players who had played at a higher level.

Haven't heard much about this dude since he's back in Sask.; I dunno if my assessment ^^ applies to him. https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/14424/jon-mirasty   The ones from higher levels that came back to the yocal league  played hard/tough on the puck, with obvious confidence*, without having to continually demonstrate their "toughness" by way of elbows, high sticks, butt ends, slew-foots [feet?], etc.

* = especially in 50/50 puck battles, or when an opponent was trying to take a puck away from them .... they seemed to know that IF they did get into difficulty, at the very worst it would end up with the puck getting tied up.

Wensink might’ve been a show-off , rubbing-it-in type… to me he wanted to own the game/rink beyond what DC/MD asked him to do.
It goes to some guys’ heads if they know they’re the toughest moron in the joint,,, ask Rudy, yer local waiter with a tray full of draft glasses at yer loco watering hotel (that reminds me, is there a “Queen’s Hotel” in your burgh?,, seems to be one in almost every Canadian small town , usually the seediest joint in town).
I saw Nasty Mirasty on spittin chiclets … quite a guy.

p.s., not sure about old man Pronger,, I doubt he got past northwestern Ontario jr. ,, course his name meant nothing at that time,, Chris was still a youngster. I found out later who the family was. We had a quiet guy originally from Dauphin on our team that played MB Jr. , can't recall his name though. He just went off to Red Lake after 20 to work in the gold mine up there.

This fighting a guy with a visor on is ridiculous, imo… sheesh. So now we’ve got Foligno injured - they showed him in the sin bin grimacing and holding his hand.

... not totally Canadian, Laurence... I extend congrats to the US Junior team for gold at the worlds.

Tongue-in-cheek Chuck, maybe mandating cages instead of visors AND a more secure chinstrap would reduce the send-a-message/provide-some-energy fighting.  Might lead to more whacking/chopping, spearing and butt-ending, but "we/they" could cross those bridges if/when.  devil

Given the hit and Bedard's reaction, I would guess that at minimum there's some dental work forthcoming. Wouldn't surprise if there was actually some jaw damage. But in that those are both above the waist, the official diagnosis will be "upper body" and you should be satisfied with that, you nosy so-and-so. wink

Pretty amazing, when you think about it. The kid makes watching Chicago worthwhile, despite the fact that only one team in the NHL currently has a worse record. God forbid that they suck enough to get their hands on Macklin Celebrini  in June...

Whacking, chopping, spearing, butt-ending will be penalized,, there are 2 refs now, not like in Gordon Howe’s days. Having said that, I think teams do get energized like the Hawks did last night when the anger heats up ,, the fight came long after the Bedard injury, mind you.

Celebrini in Chicago ? ,, yep,, think Toews and Kane and how dismal the Blackhawks were when they came on board.

Does "when the anger heats up" mean "fight"?   Do the players in leagues* [and even sports]  that frown on fighting play a not-energized style?

Heck, PEDs should be able to "energize" players, no?    Or, they could have fighting as a pre-game and/or intermission activity to energize the teams for the upcoming period.... or stop the game and have a staged fight.  yes  ..... << cheeky  [A-ha!! I just knew that there had to be a better use for media timeouts than ads, and/or "obviously" analyses.]

* = I remember a conversation with a classmate 'way back re. teaching Phys. Ed..  He said you gotta go in full of pizz and vinegar, not downcast and moping around.   Looking back, maybe a fight at the start of the class would do the trick?!?!!?  wink

Edit: Having said ^^, charging/boarding/hitting from behind would probably become a bigger issue than they are now, and in any event even now they probably come before those other bad things I mentioned. [All IMNSHumnbleO, mind you.]

Well, I’m just advocating for all the chicken-livered, scaredy-pants, la-Dee-da, dipsy-doodle, pinko college boy players and fans of the same ilk. But, I know,,, it’s a BUSINESS, and ya gotta put bums in da seats! Roll doze Rock’em/Sock’em hockey videos that made MD/DC a small fortune. (did lawyer Grimson & co. ever get any remuneration or at least a cuppa coffee from Cherry ?)
