The Blackhawks were named after a military infantry division which was named after a native Illinois chief, if I remember right. So, once removed they decided to keep the name. Methinks Buffy was a Blackhawk fan ….

Fleury mentions: ""My wife's family is of Abenaki and Mi'kmaq descent ... ."

I dunno; I've heard there are pretendians among us.  I wonder IF he's looked into the possibility .... or maybe he was too busy playing le 'ockey  cheeky

The plot thickens….
“With the Wild celebrating Native American Heritage night Friday against Colorado, Fleury wanted to honor his wife, Véronique, who is Native Canadian, with a specially designed mask. Walsh said Fleury offered to pay whatever fine he’d receive and the NHL threatened to levy the organization with an “additional significant fine”.”- The Guardian
(hmm,,,,”Guardian” sounds a lot like “Indian” ,, they might have to change their name… )

Watching the Tkachuk bros. show,, I’m seeing a quarter of the stands empty in Ottawa. Seems they off&on have trouble attracting fans in that town,,, they used to blame it on the arena having been built on the far edge of the city area , (“ halfway to Pembroke” , somebody once grumbled).
The football Riders left years ago, then returned. Baseball in the U.S. capital suffered the same fate until the Expos (“H’Expos” in Moan-ray-all) moved there.

This popped up on Facebook just now:

Members of Team Canada 1972

"Prior to each game in Canada, the players were introduced by our numbers. I remember standing ovations for Frank Mahovlich and then silence for myself and then another standing ovation for Ken Dryden. It was a humbling experience." Bobby Clarke

Johnny "Chief" Bucyk (was he part Uke and part Indigenous?) , the oldest at 88 , leaning on his cane. "Bucyk played junior hockey for four seasons for his hometown Edmonton Oil Kings before signing with the Detroit Red Wings in 1955.[2] Originally an awkward skater, Oil Kings coach Ken McAuley arranged for Bucyk to train offseason with a figure skater until his technique improved.[4] He went on to be one of the leading scorers on a strong Oil Kings squad that included future Hall of Famer Norm Ullman. Bucyk and the Oil Kings went to the 1954 Memorial Cup final against the St. Catharines Teepees, with Bucyk scoring a blistering 28 goals in 21 playoff games to lead the WCHL, as well as 14 goals in 14 Memorial Cup games to lead all scorers that season."  (Hohum,,, the TeePees still won the Cup...)

I'm not aware that Bucyk tried to mislead anybody re. his heritage/parentage, but ...???

I've mentioned it before, but, fwiw, Kim Tallman [U. of A. prof?] who had something to say about Bluffy SantaMaria said that she estimated that 25% of people teaching at universities where indigeneity (?) was an issue w.r.t hiring had been dishonest re. their credentials.   Where there's money to be made, there's money to be made .... integrity be damned!!.

The head coach of the high school football team I've previously droned on about, was wondering aloud one practice about whether to ask the principal or the V.P. about some minor detail. One of the team captains piped up: "Ask Jack [i.e. the principal] ... you can't trust anybody that's half Chinese and half Ukrainian [i.e. the V.P.].

Oh no,, I'm not doubting Bucyk’s integrity,, I threw that in there as a joke/joak.  I think he was labelled “Chief” by teammates because he was the captain. I heard him with Phil Esposito on Sirius XM years ago,,, Phil still calls him Chief.

Classless Boby Clarke - the same guy who couldn't have cared less for Roger Neilson and hung him out to dry. Pat Keon (Dave's sister, the teacher in the classroom beside mine) had no nice things to say about him, and she knew what she was talking about.

I admire Clarke for his determination and pluck ! for achieving high goals as a diabetic who had to take insulin shots daily, but as to the rest of his character he’s always left me a bit cold. He was chippy and , yeah, dirty and relied on those Flyers goons to fight for him.

...however, if you back up the video I linked you'll hear that John Ferguson told Clarke to whack Kharlamov's ankle. That series was a "win at any.cost", especially with the one-sided refereeing.  MD/DC would approve....

Google tells me that Bucyk's nickname originated with a Boston sports writer, based on JB's dark complexion, AND with Horvath who opined that JB was using his stick like a tomahawk in puck battles along the boards.   I suppose it was simultaneous*???

Re. Perry, "... violation of terms of S.P.C. and the hawks internal policies.... " tells us as much as reading a heavily redacted document obtained through freedom of information.   I guess it'll all come out in the wash.

* = Back when I was trying to register my homebuilt trike the MB government said it needed a safety inspection and a new VIN. The m.c. shop couldn't complete the inspection without a VIN and the gov't wouldn't issue a VIN without a safety.   I said to a manager in Winnipeg that it sounded to me like the two [one in Yorkton, SK and t'other in Wpg.] had to happen at exactly the same moment in time. She agreed that, yes, that was how it was supposed to happen.   You've gotta be kidding me?!?!!?... thankfully the dept. in Winnipeg had an outbreak of sanity after a day or two of backing-and-forthing.

Edit: Yer joaking might be good yes, but I think Bluffy SantaMaria's sense of humour/joaking is gooder.  cheeky

Staying/reverting with Clarke, Flin Flon Bombers, broken ankle, etc. you failed to brag on Theodore ? who captained the Bombers to a Memorial Cup win in 1957. A Togo native’s name enshrined somewhere in the HHoF.

"As per Junior A rules, the Bombers were permitted to add three players to their roster for the Memorial Cup, picking up goalie Lynn Davis and defenceman Jean Gauthier from the Fort William Canadiens and centre Orland Kurtenbach from Prince Albert Mintos for the Memorial Cup Finals. There, they faced the Eastern Canadian champion Ottawa-Hull Canadiens, coached by Sam Pollockand assistant Scotty Bowman. The first three games were in Flin Flon, with the remaining games played in Regina. The Bombers won the series four games to three, winning the 1957 Memorial Cup, only losing 11 games over their extended 1956–57 season."

I recall the heightened interest in our household awright .... trying to get radio updates and broadcasts, etc. I seem to remember it being hyped as small town vs. big city to some extent.

I expect it played a role in my interest in le 'ockey.  My first time on skates was in a game .... I remember play going from end to end, but me being unable to get blueline to blueline ... I doubt that even my mother was impressed.  sad

But, but, but, the objective was to "beat the Russians," not to skate up and down in your 1/3 of the ice and dig the puck out of the corner in the offensive end.   wink

I dunno ... is there some "editing" in there? ..... was he going to acknowledge the intentional (?) folks pass, but it got edited out?  My ears aren't that educated, but I hear, or maybe imagine, something a bit off/different at that point in the audio.

In any event aren't the 5 skaters gonna get played out and then the Russians would mount a comeback and  ..... ???  cheeky

But Tony Twist, Link Gaetz, Bob Probert, Stu Grimson and Chris Nilan could give them a breather [with either Martin Brodeur or Patrick Roy on the end of the bench .... to man the gate, ya know].

...folks pass = faux pas... n'est ce pas?

I wonder what a goalie's initial thought would be if he saw a line-up like Twist > Nilan in front of him??   I also used to wonder why there couldn't be an enforcers' game [by a different name??] in conjunction with the all-star game ... but they'd be free to play as the did 'way back.... before they were told what their role would be.  IF things did get a bit dicey, "the code" [i.e accountability for actions] would be put to use. wink
