Yep, pleasantly surprised.   yes     But the Laffs didn't play badly [aside from their big guns not stepping it up a notch].... shots were fairly close, no?  IF Wpg. cranks up their pressing style, I don't see the Habs winning that series.  Also, when the Jets get a team running around in the defensive end, they seem to have a knack for sustaining pressure and making the defensive team "pay."   BUT.... I guess I've already revealed my superior prognosticating skills. sad

Skip might not agree, but it seems to me that when the Habs switch from hockey to golf, overall interest in the playoffs drops by about 50%.

Edit: Looks like the Bruins and Islanders will give us some "bonus coverage."  And besides my man Pulock, Barzal is fun to watch.  Go Isles Go!!

Given how few Canadians there are and how many Americans have to open the dictionary every time they hear the word "Snow", I suspect you're correct.

I'm enjoying it, though.

Holy keerap!

I never expected Les Glorieux to win the series. I didn't watch any of it. I thought the Maple Cheese would eventually pull out the fourth win. But it seems they couldn't adjust to tight checking and hitting. Everyone's saying the Laffs didn't show up, that they looked nervous all the way through the game. Well, my team won, but that probably means another year with that pathetic GM. Win some, lose some.

On to Winnipeg. Well, I don't expect the Habs to win this one, either. The playoffs, a whole new season.

One bonus - no more Leaf homer talk from the Toronto-centric sports media (I hope).

They let 550 health care professionals in to watch the game.

Someone in the comments section on the CBC Web site said that if 500 health care professionals can't save the Leafs from choking, no one can.

Well, I suppose there is that ^^ too.  My man Pulock* comes from an hour down the road from where we were trying to farm.  I've never seen him play, but I occasionally did see his dad or uncle helping the Roblin North Stars [intermediate "B" ??] have some successful seasons in the late 80s and early 90s.

* = https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=130691   I hadn't noticed before, but his +/- is better than quite a few.

CBC radio says that it's expected that foam elk antlers will be in strong evidence in Commonwealth Stadium. https://edmontonsun.com/sports/football/cfl/ee-football/edmonton-elks-new-name-for-cfl-team  I suppose it beats waving a foam indigenous person about.  cheeky

............ what the heck does igloos have to do with elk???   cheeky Given the choice "apropos or no" I have to go with the latter. cheeky

[I figured I'd better show it double..... I occasionally post on Facebook, and use a wink as I would if I was talking in-person. On one post, one of my nieces, who I've never actually met, apparently didn't "get" it, and went into some long-winded explanation (?) or other.  One of my daughters advised me to go to a "wink - to - winkwinkwinkwink" system.... she said, "You don't know who all will be reading it, and some guys on Facebook take everything literally."]

Paul Maurice says the Jets are prepared for a "patient" and "grinding" series vs. Habs.   https://www.nhl.com/jets/news/jets-prepared-for-patient-and-grinding-series-against-canadiens/c-325125040?fbclid=IwAR1UFFjK-YUQx_uIiYDQfnm_eesivw5tmeQdNOLcziY3EZ8LPGuGVAo2QQk

Patient???? .... I guess the dude that figures they should stick with the obviously successful pressing/smothering style used against the Oilers is just blowing smoke.

Wow! Talk about  being wrong1

All the talk from the end of the game through the next day - and I suppose until the next season - is about: what happened to the Leafs?, what should the Leafs do next year?, who on the Leafs is to go? ... and on and on. Hardly a word about the team that beat them. All the sports media should be terminated and replaced with channels and commentators who have the ability to see that other places in Canada actually exist.

.... dunno about that ^^, Paul.... some of us like having a clear distinction between TCOTU and the rest of us..... maybe a "serves 'em right" outlook.   Who in the heck wants to get mucho hours of "analysis" of what's going on* in Russell? Having said that, I would like to see some of time/effort/$$ spent on the coverage of pro sports switched to other/lower levels, but so far I haven't put my money where my mouth is.

Well, it seems to be the Toronto media that have taken the focus off the CFL and raised the NFL's profile in Canada. It seems the CFL can't buy a break in the media - if they had the money to.

Just the other day, somebody or other (?) was saying that the salvation of the CFL will flow from changes in regulations re. sports betting that are apparently in the pipeline.

The two Rankin Inlet dudes [i.e. f-a-r from TCOTU] with the bet on the Habs-Laffs series shows the seriousness we, as fans,  should attach to it, IMNSHumbleO.  [Sorry, I couldn't get a link to work.... I expect most anyone that's interested has seen it.... it's probably not "news" at this stage.]

And, tongue-in-cheek (?) re. "who to blame," look no farther than Nick Foligno.   Had he taken it upon himself to help his team focus (?) on the task at hand by giving one of the Habs a few in the chops midway thru the third period, I expect the TO-centric media would be in their glory.  cheeky

Well, the fact that Perry never got sent to the hospital after the tilt with Folly-eeno will rankle Leaf fans for years - after all Perry’s from Peterborough, the home of the Petes who were once affiliated with the Canadiens and even sported their bleu, blanc, et rouge back when I was hanging from the rafters at the old Garden City Arena watching the Teepees vs. the T.P.T.’s (Toronto Peterborough Transport).

(that's a recent Petes retro sweater)

I'm gonna hafta stop being surprised.

Looks like the Jets finished the same the way they started it.... a bit of head-hunting.  To me that was out of character for Schieffle, but if the league doesn't take some action re. deliberate attempt to injure, then it will signal a need for some of OTGAO's philosophy.

Edit: The analysts once again demonstrate their superior smarts..... mentioning "similarities" between ^^ and the Tavares incident, without being specific,  but declining to mention the one salient difference: 1 was 100% accidental and the other 100% intentional.

Nah, Chuck.... I've acknowledged that he's chippy, but the incident with Tavares wasn't an example.   [But he did take a good (?) elbow from Dubois on the Habs second goal.... I guess that's what's meant by "takin' one for the team."]

Speaking of penalties [and seeing how you did a fine job of explaining the tag up on delayed offsides]: How come there's no interference penalty when players bump/jostle as the approach a loose puck?  So far as I know there is no "distance" requirement: eg. okay within 2 meters [just for you, Chuck cheeky],  but a no-no if farther away??????

On Global National just now, they reported [with appropriate slower enunciation and lowered voice pitch for em-fass-iss] Perry taking the elbow as "...and he pays the price!!"

Edit: And they went on to expound on a ball game between the Wpg. Goldeyes and "The Weiners."  What the???  So.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_Dogs   I doubt that they'll be forced to change the name to placate pooches and their owners, but one never knows. wink

The finer details of the game bore me now,,, or should I say are too bothersome to think about - ya got got your boxed-out, yer mid-ice trap, yer chip&chase, yer automatic icing, yer tagging-up fer off sides,, yer full court press, yer Statue-of-Liberty play,, yer sacrifice bunt,,, brother, I can’t handle all the mental gymnastics. All I go for these days are the shots, the hits, the saves, the fisticuffs, the across-the-grain passes, and the Leo Boivin hip checks.
