Yeah,, truckers still call Montreal the “swamp”.
Vancouver is the “beach”. Then there’s Froot Loops, Edmonchuk, the ‘Toon, the Hat, Vagina, Winterpeg. Toronto being Hogtown or the Big Smoke.

Yer right, it is [was?] a tempest in a teapot.  Weasel MacLean's explanation (?) is on par with DC/MD's attempt to explain (?) his "you people" remark.   C'est la vie??   [Apparently << that's Frenchy. I'm not up on grammar rules;  something about stuff from another language being italicized??   What would Mrs. Lindsay think?? ]  cheeky

P.S.  "Froot Loops" is a new one for me in that context .... where is it?

I remember the first time I saw "the Big Smoke" used. I thought it was a mistake calling Toronto that. I thought it was Sudbury. Torontonians call Toronto "Centre of the Universe". And the media call the Leafs "the only team in Canada worth reporting on".

Whey do they call Nanaimo - "bars"?

Why do they call prairie “oysters” ?

- back to hockey,,, my first trip in the truck to the 'Toon had me sent out to , you guessed it, Floral, SK, a tiny burg (there's not much there now, an old house or two) just east of the city where we rented a few spaces from Kleysen Trucking.  Well, from years of seeing that name on the back of my Gordie Howe hockey cards as his birthplace my heart leapt into my throat. Strange how childhood stuff can still grab ya when ya gits aulder.

I guess the ^^ mindset has deep roots. CBC radio's Under the Influence* with Terry O'Reilly** was on in the background a bit ago.  He mentioned that one of the trading card companies [Beehive??] would substitute a Turk Broda*** card when requests for other players outstripped the supply.

* = italicized but NOT Frenchy!!   cheeky

** = the other Terry O'Reilly.

*** = T.O'R. also mentioned that Mr. Hockey scored his first NHL goal on Mr. Broda.

..... and to think.....  IF someone had taken the idea and run with it "The Hockey Sweater" might still be bouncing around in somebody's noggin.

I read “Scrubs on Skates” by Scott Young, Neil’s Dad. I recall him as analyst between periods with Ward Cornell on the Saturday night Laff games. He worked for the Telegram back then. (I had a Telegram newspaper route back in St. Catharines - between it and picking strawberries I made a bundle....)

Well, ya gotta hand it to that Hobey Baker award winner Caufield. Nifty play at the end there. A bit of the ol' "la-dee-da".

Didn't watch it - busy on that session out of Phoenix. At the start, someone said the Habs were leading. I said they'd blow it. And they did. I saw the replay of the goal - at least it was a very good one. Someone asked if Galchenyuk got an assist.

Someone else cracked, "The Leafs and the Stanley Cup...social distancing since 1967." One can only hope.

Really, the Habs should have finished out of the playoffs. Then there's at least a chance they'd get a new GM. Again, one can only hope.

Buck M : “ It’s been an ugly inning for the Indians”

Dan S, thinking “but not as ugly as DC/MD’s sports jackets.”

..... well, the 1/2 inning was pretty ugly!    Not to mention:

Hank Snow 'The Singing Ranger', Nashville, 1971-72. by Ray-Jones, Tony at Science and Society Picture Library

Here's a serious question, or two, for ya:  What's the diff between "holding" and "holding the stick"?   If we need holding the stick, why not holding the glove, holding the arm, holding the leg, etc.?

Where's the smart money re. tomorrow's game?  I'm thinking the Maple Laffs would be quite heavily favoured..... just hoping Les Habs don't play like it's the day after winning the cup.  I haven't watched much of other* series, but so far the Jets are the only team that used a full court press (?).... it looked pretty effective, so ............??

* = Wouldn't mind seeing my man Pulock and the Isles get 'er done, but ........???

Game seven. Who'd'a thunk it? "Not I," sez he, aware that Bergevin might keep his job and regretting it.

Deja voo all over again for the Leafs? One can only hope.

Every girl crazy 'bout a sharp-dressed man. (and if he keeps scoring hat tricks he can wear whatever he wants, far as I'm concerned).

And Pasta collected hundreds, maybe thousands, last night (TD Garden is back to full capacity).

But I'm pretty sure that this one isn't one of those volunteered.

Skip: "....to wear something this bold and not bother with socks."

Maybe D.P. should get the word out to the fans: "Next time please throw socks."

Pretty nifty goal by MacKinnon [2:55ish left in the second].  Speed kills.... or so I've heard.
