The Columbus Blue Jackets just fired head coach Dean Evason and an assistant coach, and hired Rick Bowness. Hockey insider Eliotte Friedman, whom one ignores at their own peril, tweeted "I did not see this one coming."

Sunday was a good day. Saw the Baby Bruins win live in person in Providence, drove home hearing the Boston Bruins win in a squeaker, and had the dinner dishes all washed up in time to watch the Patriots continue their "who'da thunk it?" season.

And now.... HEEEEEeeeeeerrrre's JACKIE!

Wots with the wooly bear near her left eye?              [Inquiring minds want to know!!  wink ]

Is Elliotte Friedman as good as he wants us to think he is?   Actually I don't mind him, but, but, but, if I pay more attention to him* will les 'abs do better?  .....which after all is what matters.

* I guess that's a sacrifice I could make.   ["I'm a man, I can change, IF I have to... I guess."]

I like it when Bieksa (“Bieska” to DC/MD) pokes fun at Ellie Friedman. He takes the jabs good-naturedly,, but there’s something about his style that irks me a bit - kind of a smug self-importance. But then, I’ve been told I’m not perfect either, so….
(btw, being a new old fogie, I prefer the old team name of Providence Reds, FWIW)

Friedman and Frank Seravelli seem to get the dirt on major moves before anyone else does. I've long nursed the suspicion that they maintain a rather cozy relationship with the Commissioner's office. They may dig out the story earlier, but I'd bet there's a nudge-nudge-wink-wink thing going where the League gives them the "go" signal. Regardless, those guys tend to break stuff WAY more than anyone else does.

As to whether paying more attention to him will help Les Habs? The man is a hockey pundit, pure and simple. I've seen no evidence of magical powers.

I remember E F working in the booth with BooYays broadcaster Tom Cheek in the early ‘90’s as an intern. Cheek claimed E F was destined for greatness.
Yes, I think he has an inside lane as to info from his “sources”.

There were things we knew we didn’t know….
Anne Murray, the former phys ed teacher turned singer, wanted to play hockey, but no chance back in Scova Nova's backwoods.

The Boston Bruins will hoist #33 to the rafters of TD Garden tonight.

Here's a nice article (hopefully not paywalled) in which Charlie McAvoy discusses what he learned from Big Z.

He was the best #33 I ever saw ;-)
Might be the first time a Slovak is being honoured in Boston with a German behind the bench.
Now I’m trying to think , ouch,, what other double digit numbers are retired - is 77 Bourque hanging from the rafters? …. 99 of course,,, 88 will someday (P. Kane) ,,,, 66 in Pittsburgh… not sure about 11 or 22

(article is not paywalled)

p.s. #22 - Willie O'Ree .... Mike Bossy .... Sedin twins

p.s.2

Does anyone here know where Harbaugh will end up?

Anyone on this site what to sell her or his banjos so they can purchase the New York Giants football club.

I think it can be obtained for 9 or 10 Billion dollars. You might get it down to 8 Billion if you can throw in a prewar Gibson 5 or two!

Clearly, ownership is the problem. Anyone who owns one banjo has more sense than the Mara and Tisch families who own the Giants.

Thanks to you all for representing the more important issues effecting the world on BHO

I seem to recall hearing about a Harbaugh some years back.     Jim??  ... and maybe also a brother/son??  devil

[It's been quite a few years since my interest in NFL and NCAA foosball waned considerably .... maybe even pre-internet?? ..... too many teams and not enough coverage in my neck of the Canadian woods to keep up with the minutiae?]

I don't much follow the business end of things, but tripped over this t'other day ... not football, but dollar figures with 'way more zeros than I normally deal with:  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2025/07/01/what-is-bobby-bonilla-day-contract/84424576007/

He is getting a minium salary of 20 million a year.  Think of the banjos you could buy if you made that much!

Chuck: " [....] this code thing between “enforcers” is just too weird for me."

I agree ^^.   Not to flog a dead horse, but 69ish years after starting 'ockey, just thus past week I heard a definition/explanation/?? of "the code" that I've not heard before, but I think I can go along with: "You behave like a jerk ... you get treated like a jerk."

YMMV?  ............. or like Tom: I ask no agreement??    wink

No doubt he'll find one.

I do find the difference between pro coaching and coaching at, say, a Division One school interesting, especially with football and hockey. The tradeoffs seem obvious to me. A successful head coach at the college level can make a VERY nice salary and enjoy really good job security. In the pros, not so much. McDermott had one of the longer tenures in the NFL, but even Mike Tomlin just left his gig in Pittsburgh - after 18 seasons. And he was the longest continually-serving coach in the league.

Yes, head coaches in the pros make two to three times the salary and get to work with the best of the best. But if I was in a position to pick between, say, a head coaching position in the NHL and, say, head coach at Boston College? Sign me up for school. A bit less money; a LOT less stress and anxiety. Before the Bruins hired Marco Sturm this season, Jay Pandolfo (Boston University) was being floated to take over the team. I don't know how grounded in reality those rumors were, but to nobody's surprise, it never happened. Pandolfo lives a very nice life.

PS: Boston really likes Sturm. I give him three seasons.

Further to my previous, now that I think about it:

I also think I'd find it a lot more gratifying to help develop the skills of a promising young player, as opposed to attempting to squeeze the last few grams of goodness out of a millionaire.
