Earl Scruggs Is Gone - Yet His Music Plays On

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

All of us at the Banjo Hangout are saddened by the news that the great Earl Scruggs died of natural causes away this morning at the age of 88.

Earl wasn't just another banjo player... he was the most important banjo player who has ever lived. He created and popularized a unique playing style whose sound changed old-time music forever. His expressive, rapid-fire three-finger picking defined "the banjo sound" for a new generation of banjo players.

No other musician has had such a profound affect upon their instrument as Earl had on the banjo. He redefined "banjo music" for the world. While there are certainly other great banjo players who have made a mark on music, Earl's contribution stands head and shoulders above the rest.

There are already several "In Memoriam" threads regarding Mr. Scruggs' passing on the Banjo Hangout, but I will link to the most popular one here, because I'd like to see folks post their well-wishes and kind words in one thread if possible, so Earl's family and friends can easily see them when and if they want to. Please do post your thoughts on Earl here.

The family of Earl Scruggs will receive friends during visitation March 30-31 between 3–7PM at Spring Hill Funeral Home, 5110 Gallatin Pike, Nashville. Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 1 at 2PM at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum in Nashville or the Earl Scruggs Center (Destination Cleveland County, The Earl Scruggs Center, P.O. Box 2063, Shelby, NC 28151.)
