I have been teaching myself to play banjo since 1979. (Banjo pickers around the Fremont area seem to be few and far between so personal lessons are hard to find). My favorite web sites are the ones with free tablature downloads. I also mess around on the Dobro and have just taken up an interest in a Chromatic 3 Octave Hammered Dulcimer.
In my drafting class in 1982 I designed an electric banjo and had a luthier build it for me in around 1984 with the intention of getting a banjo picking style of jazz with the sound of a hot electric guitar (I call it a "Bantar"). (Bela beat me to it).
I am into many banjo styles of music like Blues, Ragtime, Jazz, Classical, Christmas, and of course good ole Bluegrass.
I try to get to see the local bluegrass festivals but I am just too shy to join in any jam sessions. I have performed in small time local bar bands as a banjo backup but I have never had a chance to perform in a real bluegrass band.
My biggest thrill was to shake hands with Bela Fleck and Victor Wooten at an outdoor concert in Omaha.
