Absolutely GREAT tidbit in the Jays-Rangers just now.   Tanner Roark pitching for Jays, Nate Lowe batting.... goes to 2 strikes on a couple of fastballs.  Buck Martinez says something like "I wouldn't go after him with something off-speed... just another well-located fastball at the upper edge of the strike zone."   Well.... it's just like Buck was still managing and had passed on his wisdom during a mound visit... Roark throws a fastball up pretty much as BM prescribed..... and Lowe [insert drum roll here] parked it over the fence in left center.   Buck carried on his commentary as if nothing unusual had happened... made no mention of his "Oooops... ."  

I often wonder how much of it is a guessing game between hitter & pitcher. Ya gotta know there’s a lot of luck (or edumicated guessing) involved.
Gotta be good to be lucky,,, and you gotta be lucky to be good.

Okay, youse [mediocre] experts.... what are the odds of this?   Through the course of last evening I flitted back and forth between 3 hockey games [and, of course SNB got into the mix].  St. Cloud State vs. UMass in the NCAA final; Habs vs. Jets ..... both ending up 5 - 0.  When the late game came on, I wondered aloud [to my disinterested, but very patient wife] whether the Oilers would win 5 -0 and make  it three successive 5 - 0 games.   Well it panned out a wee bit differently [5 - 0 Flames], but all three teams that I was "hoping" for tallied the grand total of 0 goals.   

[And to top it off, when I checked 6/49 this morning, I got skunked there too.]

...anybody else watching the Braves-Phillies game?   Top of the ninth, the Philly runner is called safe at home on a fly-ball out to short left field.  The umps "reviewed" it. From the various angles they showed, two of the replays clearly show the runner not touching the plate.... ie. his foot passes over/above the corner of the plate without touching it.... but the call is not overturned.  Anybody else see what I saw?

Last nite during the Phillies-Mets broadcast they interviewed Jim Brown as part of paying homage (?) to Jackie Robinson, noting that both JB and JR were pretty fair multi-sport/all-round athletes.

On the Dodgers-Rockies broadcast it was mentioned that Dodger pitcher Trevor Bauer was probably the most unathletic MLB player, but he was successful because early on he had decided to do one thing [i.e. pitch a baseball] exceptionally well.

Coincidentally, this popped up on Facebook this a.m.: "One year Al Arbour asked Billy Smith to ride a stationary bicycle at the start of training camp.  He did so, and returned the next day stiff and sore. ”I told Al, ’Do you want a hockey player or a bicyclist?’ ” says Smith. ”If you want a bicyclist, I’ll ride that thing into the ground. a) Patrick Marleau breaks Mr. Hockey's record of 1767 games played in NHL. [This one kinda snuck up on me.... but he struck me as an honest, dependable player.... good on him!]

b) Credit Union Place in Saskatoon will be putting a statue of Fred Sasakamoose outside it's doors to help Mr. Hockey welcome people to the place. [Is the downtown one of GH still there, or did it get moved out to the CUP?]

c) OUR all-time favourite player Milan Lucic is being honoured in Cgy. tonight for 1000 game sin the NHL [I think # 1000 was a couple of games ago in TO].         [That's one for Paul, one for Chuck, and one for me.    You're welcome.... no thanks necessary.   ]

I’ll always kind of admire a guy that skates like a plough horse for lasting that long in the NHL. I’m just glad he didn’t go the route of Boogaard and others.

if I'm not mistaken, Marleau is a part Métis Saskabush native. Grew up not far from another Métis star Brian Trottier. 

Plough horse you say???  That's a comparison I sometimes used when talking about a family whose kids I taught/coached at my first teaching job.   Only diff is I said the Cookshaws looked like thoroughbreds in a field of plough [plow?] horses, even though some of their team mates were no slouches... they just stood out!

Olympic team.   Their old HS coach takes NO credit [track was okay, but it wasn't my favorite sport to coach]..... they did ALL the work.  

P.S. I wonder how many decades Marleau is "in"  or "has played in."

On reflection, I suppose I should take some credit. I normally interfered as little as possible in the athletes choice of events.  B.C. ^^ had registered for the 1/2 mile* with another dude registered for the 440*.   In one of those "let's-make-things-interesting" training sessions  I had the whole team do an event ... usually involving some "handicapping," eg. give the shot-putters a 40 or 50 yd. head start in a 440 race.   In the LMTI 440, Brian absolutely obliterated his team mate, so we had a sit-down and I convinced the two to switch events.  All's well that ends well!
