Just to keep our timelines in perspective:

Bobby Orr was born during Gordie Howe's 2nd NHL season. By the time Gordie Howe retired, Bobby Orr was already in the Hockey Hall of Fame.......

Four years before I breathed any air on this orb 16 year-old Howe was playing in this barn with the Junior Galt Red Wings, except he only played one league game due to some transfer of rights problems between the Rangers & Red Wings.

Is it still standing? You don't find arenas with facades like that any more.

Dad took me to my first game at the Forum when I was, maybe, ten or younger. It was Habs vs. Wings. I remember almost nothing of it now (except that the Wings won 3-2), but you can guarantee that Howe and the Rocket were playing, Beliveau, too.

It’s still there... “The Galt Arena Gardens is one of the oldest continuously-operating ice hockey arena in the world[1] and the oldest operating arena in Ontario. Galt Arena Gardens was built throughout 1921 and opened in January 1922.”

This is the old hockey barn I went to (to which I went [sorry, Mrs. Lindsay]) to watch the TeePees , then Junior Blackhawks - Garden City Arena, built in 1938. I’d listen to the games on the radio at home and if it was a close game after the second period I’d jump on my bicycle and race the 20 minutes to the arena to watch the final half of the third period, when you could walk in free.,,, (often standing room only 3 or 4 deep;  "hangin' from the rafters!", as ol' Rex Stimers would bellow out)

....but the "real" barn was in Melville, SK.   I was never in it [nor the new one that opened fall 2011, for that matter], but it was one of those ubiquitous arch-rib [i.e. barn/machine shed style] deals.

What I found interesting was that in the SJHL calling a rink a barn went beyond "our/their barn" ..... particularly after the point when all the other teams had new(er)-style rinks/arenas/multiplexes/communiplexes/etc.... leaving Melville with the one true barn!

Togo [birthplace of Ted Hampson and Mr. Owen, in case I didn't mention it before] apparently has also seen two rinks.  Alas, Mr. Hampson left town as a baby, so likely never skated in either.   

The first was a pole style with a row of poles down the middle of the ice.  I've been told that "back in the day," some of the players would inadvertently guide an opponent into a post, but you know how folklore has a way of getting modified with the passage of time.   

The new/current arch-rib style "Togo & District Memorial Rink" [where Mr. Owen laced 'em up] was opened in about 1950; all the amenities: 65' X 163' ice surface, TWO dressing rooms [approx. 10' X 10' each], a coal-burning space heater in the "waiting room," 45-gal. drum-on-a-sled ice resurfacer (?), etc., etc. .... very much like most other small prairie villages, I figure.

But, in keepin' with the times, in the early 1980s, the old waiting room was removed and replaced with an expanded cinderblock one..... so spacious it has a real kitchen, real dressing rooms, and serves the adjoining curling rink as well.  

During my playing days with the Red Lake Rockets in the Norwesto Intermediate League, the coldest barn I played in was in Sioux Lookout, Ontario. It was -30 out, and I dare say -29 inside. I froze solid sitting on the bench between shifts.
The smelliest barn had to be in Dryden, Ontario. The huge paper mill stunk up the whole town, including the arena innards. Yuk,,sulphur, anyone...!?

The old arena at Loyola had the ROTC mess upstairs - the old fashioned equivalent of today's luxury boxes, only much bigger and with a cash bar.

Then they built the new arena in '66, but had stands on just one side. Duh. When Loyola would play Sir George Williams there wasn't enough room for the fans. Ironically, Sir George used our arena for their home games. They played one game at the McGill arena, but some "enthusiastic fans" (idiots) damaged the roof by banging on it. Then there was the SGWU Winter Carnival game at the Paul Sauve Arena. Loyola finally beat SG. For the last minute of the game all of us on our side chanted, Happy Caaaaaarnivaaal!" Loyola played in the '67 nationals at the Forum and beat U of T 1-0 at 11"13 of overtime. U of T were the perennial champions. Loyola had a student population of about 2000.

Irony: In '74 Loyola and SGWU merged to form Concordia U., which now has about 46,000 students. The old arena is now the Physical Services building. It's where I started skating and playing, and where our class of seven males (the two females didn't play) formed our own team. I think we played one game.

Apparently Louis Armstrong and His All-Stars played on opening night... I don't know who the opposing team was.   I was only ever in it once [summertime] ..... the roof/ceiling "dip" blocked the view of seats across the way, which I think would give an odd sensation if one could hear the fans, but not see them [like Covid-NHL, I guess  ].   ....and the upper rows of seats were on such a steep incline that it gave me a bit of vertigo (?).... not helped by a lack of hand railings.

* = easy now, I had to look it up.... I trust it's the right word.... Where's DC when ya  need him??

Precious little sympathy from where I sit.   I watched until they got to the barf-worthy part about delivering the game puck with a coast guard boat.... and figured: "Gimme a %^$#&% break!!"  However, I did notice les Nordique sweaters ... looked good when worn by les Nordique; goofy when worn by a team from Denver.   

And ^^ gives you an idea of my take on teams coming up with "different" sweaters every few games.   I dunno whether the NHL is trying to alienate existing fans or gain new ones???     And, in case any NHL execs are reading this, those super-reflective LVGN's helmets a few games back are very distracting/off-putting on TV!!

I'm too lazy to search it out, but I wonder what "D&C/OTGAO" thinks of ^^.   I did notice that analysts now use a much more erudite term than D&C.... it's now "chip and chase."  

All MNSHumbleO mind you.   ... Now back to irregular (?) programming.
