The way I see things, if a team has the horses and isn't winning it's the coach's fault.  If they're losing because they don't have the horses it's management's fault.

I dunno whether Ducharme is the man for the job, or not.   It could be quite a quandry.... He also called them (us? I was a co-chair of the cycling committee back in T.O.) "kooks". Someone gave me a button made in response to MD's stupid comment. It's pink and says "Bike Riding Pinko". I wanted a bunch of us to don (no pun intended) pink t-shirts and ride back and forth in front of his place on Wolfe Island. Never got around to it. Then he sold it.

...youse guys seem to overlook basic stuff like: keep yer stick on the ice [when you're not high-sticking an opponent, that is   ]; don't screen your own goalie [ooops.... "screen" is verboten, it's now "take his eyes away"]; tape/tie the achilles protector to the leg so a skate can't come down inside; gloves with a worthwhile cuff; padding on the outside of cap of the elbow pad; no-touch icing, etc., etc.     

But,  otoh, I figure so long as "we" don't let D&C/OTGAO become totally forgotten, we're doing our bit.  

Onto a slight tangent, I acknowledge that the top players are the top players regardless of the era, but I wonder how Gretzky's "numbers" would have panned out without team mates like McSorley and Semenko.   Anybody care to specule?

In Gretzky’s era the grabbing, hooking, slashing, face-washing wasn’t called like it is now so I’m thinking Big Sementhead and McSoreass had a big part in 99 getting more space. The Oilers had Lucic for McDavid but traded him thinking he was dispensable, so now Meddling Tkachuk can strut his stuff more readily, although I admire his willingness to drop the mitts now & then to take his lumps. Ferguson had the backs of a lot of Flying Frenchmen in his day too. (I know your stripes by now, Owen - a card-carrying member of the DC/MD fan club...)*

Speaking of taking one's lumps.... reach back into your archives and help me out:   There was a guy in the mid 60s ... not an enforcer, a regular (?) sized guy, who scrapped a fair bit.... Bruce MacGregor comes to mind, but I looked up his stats and it's not him.... I don't recall the guy ever getting even a "draw," but it didn't seem to deter him.  Not much to go on, but I think his name started with either "Mc___" or "Mac___," and I thought (?) he was from the maritimes [maybe NS] but I looked up a list of all NS NHLers and nothing seems to fit.

P.S.  Oooops!  ... specule?   ...speculate?   ...take a wild guess??

Nope, not KM ... although he didn't mind the rough and tumble style.  The name Alec or Alex also comes to mind as does a longish, reddish brushcut, and maybe a Red Wings uniform, but I dunno whether ^^ those should be regarded as clues or leading you farther astray??

Naturally enough (?), your mentioning KM prompted me to consult hockeydb.com.  I see he played la-dee-da hockey at U of Denver in 1967-68.... an odd (?) looking 19-man roster of 2 Americans and 17 from MB/SK/AB ..... compared to this season's roster of 13 Americans, 12 Canadians and 2 Europeans.

And seeing as how we need a tie-in to D&C/OTGAO, I think I saw him in the stands at the Scotties, although the camera panned fairly quickly and without being forewarned...........

Red Wings had Alex Delvecchio for, like, forever, He played on a line with Ted Lindsay and Gordie Howe. You can't get much dirtier than that. Just about everyone said that Howe was one of the dirtiest. I heard Doug Harvey make some remarks. If you hit him, he'd retaliate - some time in the game. Shots after the whistle, too. And Lindsay was no choirboy. Dunno if Delvecchio's your boy.

Geez - memories of the old b&w TV* in the living room on Wilson Avenue in the Fifties. One thing that hooked me was the clean ice at the start of a period and the 'click' of crisp, clean passing.

* A Crosley in a mahogany cabinet so it was just another piece of furniture with the doors closed. They had a thing about TV in the living room. (Me too - the TV belongs in the basement.) My parents had it until Dad went into the home about five years after Mom died. My cousin asked for it. He had it made into a liquor cabinet.

We first had a small but heavy TV with an aerial in the attic.... 4 channels ; two Buffalo, one Toronto , and a snowy CHCH Hamilton that aired jr. hockey on Thursdays evenings. They had the Tiger-Cubs (pre Red Wings), we had the TeePees. The picture so snowy you had to use your imagination to see the puck.

Then, when we moved to Mayfair Ave,. we got cable. We got Plattsburgh, NY, and Burlington, Vermont. Narragansett Beer commercials (funny), also Schultz and Dooley mugs for another brand (Schlitz?). We see them at antique markets. (We spent our summers in Vermont. too.)

When we first got the TV, CBC was English and French on one channel. And it was the only game in town.

I see he had 383 PIM in 1550 games [i.e. = a minor every 8 games].  I expect the answer to my previous question will eventually come to me, and I also expect that I'll probably have been right on one or two of my "clues."

Not sure if I ever told you guys about my hometown TeePees, but anyway here’s a couple of pics from the 1950’s. The team with just numbers, no crest, is the 1954 Memorial Cup winners. The other is 1956, Hull’s last season before moving up to the Chicago Blackhawks. Can ya spot Johnny McKenzie? How about St. Boniface’s Ed and Cec Hoekstra? Coach Rudy...?

Yep, TP stood for the owners Thompson Products. They made car parts. Some of the TeePee hockey players got cushy jobs there in the summer between seasons.
Brian Cullen, captain of the ‘54 team, brother Barry , Assistant captain (ex-NHL’er John Cullen’s father) ...the Cullens set OHA Jr. A scoring records but never lasted long in the NHL. No. 4 is Elmer (Moose) Vasko, a guy Tony O said could polish off a 24 case of beer in an hour.
