Claude Julien has been admitted to hospital with chest pains. Hope he’s alright,,,I like him....BUT,,, Kirk Muller will take over in the interim, a Cornwall boy (which is close but not quite in Quebec) and a rusty francais linguist. He’ll be lambasted in the Montreal French press if the Habs lose the series....but wait a sec - they’re playing in TO, not Moan-Ray-all !
Whaddaya mean "if"? I watched them drop last nite's game, and when I turned the TV on at noon today, I see they're losing again!! ... and being down 0-2 makes for a tough row to hoe.

'way back ['68, my first teaching job.... Swanee River, MB] there was a doc that was new to town, and being from Jamaica [I think] and trained in England, wasn't familiar with baseball. He watched a World Series game along with several other teachers. They were betting nickels on whether a batter would get a hit or not. Without a hint of shame, they took the doc's money by also "betting" on some of the replays... holding off until well into the game before letting him in on it.

...the [mem's] FN tournaments I've seen don't play the most structured style, but you surely get your money's worth from an entertainment standpoint.... lots of offensive creativity. .....and I have to tip my toque to guys that apparently don't spend a lot of time on their training regimens, but can still go out and skate reasonably hard/well [albeit maybe not for as long as some others].

The Loyola Warriors (who beat the reiginng champs U of T Blues in the national semi-final 1-0 in overtime - at the Forum in '67) once played the Canadiens old-timers at our arena. The young guns potted a few goals and thought they were hot stuff, then the old boys put on a display of smoothness and finesse and gave the kids a lesson in how it's really done.
Owen, I played with a couple of FN guys on the Red Lake Rockets. They got inspired in the offensive end and loved scoring ,,,,,back checking ? ....,ahhh, not so much. (having said that the old Rangers' Jim Neilson was a stellar stay-at-home defenceman)

We had a Francophone woman sing at the open mic who occasionally sang a song called "Shackles and Chains", but her accent made it sound like "Chuckles in Chains". I asked people if she had a clown tied up in her basement.

I read a story about Gordie Howe when he was with the Hartford Whalers ; they played an exhibition game against the Yale (I think it was) university team. The young wise guys made a few remarks about Howe's grey hair and aging appearance. Five minutes later after a few elbows , broken teeth, and bloody noses the smart-asses were dead quiet !

Owen, not sure - the name's vaguely familiar. This was in 1973 so the mists of time and Mother Nature have clouded my memory. But there was a guy on our team that used to play in the MB jr. league for Dauphin that you might have known. Can't remember his name though. 'Course by then you were probably in the big city seeking your fame and fortune digging ditches.....

Thanks for that, bubba, it's good to see things being kept in perspective [unlike some* who overestimate the influence/importance of that guy we've long since forgotten].
I like the line about "...crumble like (another dude we can't mention here) at a spelling bee." I wonder how he'd do on potato/potatoe?

I'm more interested in the human interest stories in sports than the sports themselves. I could sit & watch plays of the month covering all sports for hours on a rainy Sunday but I can't watch a whole game of any sport with the sound on.
With a few of you being Hab's fans here's a tidbit that I'm not sure Paul is aware of living in my hometown.
When I was a kid my Grandparents bought a new home in Kingston on Morenz Crescent. Gus owned a cement plant & was a former hockey player that promoted sports in K-Town.
