Back in the day I used to consume the odd wobbly pop [how's that for a not-so-tenuous link to you-know-who?] .... usually a Molson product.  If asked "why?" I'd usually reply that 2 cents was going to support Les Habs, and I considered it my civic duty.  Nowadays, if I buy some, it's normally Rickard's Red, but consumption has tailed off to the point that in a year, all the 2 cents added up probably wouldn't even buy a free stir stick for the paint to paint the sign

The big Buff was an important part of the Blackhawks’ 2010 Stanley Cup win. He’s a bit of a lost soul, methinks. Took a year off hockey in his teens and went ice fishing all winter. From Roseau, mini-soda, raised by single mom who worked in the local snowmobile factory. Every guy I ever knew who grew up without a father had issues,,,, it's a shame.

Yep.... I think about that "lost soul" stuff from time to time..... maybe working on the fly-in reserves accentuated it for me??  I can't speak from direct experience, but I think it's kinda sad when a person can't find contentment.  I seem to recall reading/hearing that Doug Harvey only ever felt truly at home/comfortable when he was at the rink.   When I was trying to farm I had a neighbour who was quite successful at dairying.... he told me he had tried other lines of work, but only felt content operating a dairy.... almost as if it was a "calling."

Doug Harvey lived near us in Montreal (N.D.G.) in the house he built - he had a construction company. Nicest house on that short block. The grownups in the room said he drank. Wikipedia just confirmed it.

As DH was one of my early hockey heroes, I figure I'd best check out Wikipedia [thanks Paul].   I came across this tidbit re. his playing style:  "Prior to the start of Harvey's career, it was normal for defencemen to pass the puck off to forwards or dump it into the offensive zone; the goal was to quickly move it out of the defensive zone and limit chances for the opponent to set up plays. Harvey was not interested in this system, and preferred to keep control of the puck as long as he could. In this way Harvey felt he could control the tempo of the play, and felt that by quickly dumping the puck it only turned over possession to the opponent."   

He's lucky DC wasn't his coach.   [I'll save you the trouble Chuck/Paul: ..... Everybody would be lucky to not have DC as a coach.       ]

I think it was Orr that said Doug Harvey was a big influence on how to play defence with a lean towards offence. Orr took that notion and ran (skated) with it,,,,did he ever!
I also recall that ex-NHL’er and former Bruin Bill Quackenbush (let’s hear DC pronounce that one) gave Orr lots of tips on being an offensive-minded defenceman.

When one of my daughters and SIL try to tell me that Gretzky is the GOAT, [I overlook the fact that they live in Beaumont, AB] I counter with "Which would win a series.... a team of 20 Bobby Orrs, or a team of 20 Gretzkys?"  I brought this up at cards this past winter and one guy said that a team of 20 Messiers would beat a team of 20 Orrs.   

So, let's hear the experts(?)....  who would you clone to be the real GOAT?    [And don't tell me Ron Hextall, since he could stop 'em as well as fight and score.    ]      Potvin?   Park?

In the early 70s the Lions club where I worked would buy Jets tickets for underprivileged kids and a chaperone (?) and the chaperone would contribute the car and gas.  I was in on it for a couple of games [as a driver.... not as a kid].  Seats were 'way up on the end a bit below the pic of Lizzie.  You couldn't risk dozing off ... Hull would let 'er rip from anywhere redline in*.... and it  could hit pretty much anywhere on the end of the arena. 

* = I think that was just his own interpretation of DC's "dump it in."
