Edit: Was thinking of you during a Jets broadcast just the other day Chuck. I wasn't paying close enuff attention to get all the details, but the analyst said that a Jets player's failure to get the puck out of their end lead to an opposition goal. I awoke enuff to hear him definitely say that all the player had to do was "...put it off the glass." [But I suppose he could have been a protege of you-know-who.]

Thanks for posting Chuck... I hadn't heard. I guess the deaths of one's childhood icons is something that everybody experiences, regardless of their field of endeavour, but...... ? I wonder if the era makes any diff.... mine were from the time when radio left something to one's imagination.... .

The Mrs. showed me the news last night as we dined in Port Hope on the way back from T.O. That's too bad. I don't know if there's anyone left from that era when he started. He did better than his more famous brother after retirement 'cause he owned a tavern. "The Richard brothers and Moore" - I can still hear Danny Gallivan calling the play-by-play.

Things sure have changed from when I stalked the hallowed halls there. I had a cup of coffee with the Gryphons in 1972 and most of the guys were former Jr.B and Tier 2 Jr. players. Not sure if MD cozied up to edumucated players although I recall Mike Milbury saying he used to drive to the arena with Grapes ( probably arguing all the way there). So it's off to Halifax - GO GRYPHS!

U. hockey, I'd like to see some CIU hockey [as well as all the other sports] televised during the year... that way when the national tournament comes around we wouldn't be watching games where one group of players with which we have no connection/familiarity play another group of players with which we have no connection/familiarity. Having said that, I won't be sponsoring any CIU telecasts.

About half of the local senior team has junior "A" [once in a while CHL or US univ.] experience.... like you say, a far cry from "back in the day." FWIW, last nite they beat the Miniota-Elkhorn C-Hawks [best of 5 league final tied 1-1]... I think it was M-E's first loss of the season. Pretty good/fast/entertaining hockey.
Had to look up C-Hawks,,,huh? Merging of the Miniota Night Hawks and the Elkhorn Canadians.
...an oddity from last nite's game: M-E on a powerplay in the last minute of first period. Russell gets another penalty [delayed call]... M-E goalie heads for the bench ... M-E retains control... 6 skaters against 4, and gets a shot on Russell net.... Russell goalie makes the save and M-E player gets the rebound and passes it back to the point.... puck hops over the d'man's stick and rolls all the way into the empty M-E net. Russell goalie given credit.... apparently it was his "first goal of the year."
Edit: .... a fair bit of "charging" goes uncalled in the North Central League, IMO. I'm sure DC would approve. [How's that for a tenuous tie-in?]

When I was young(er), and still trying to play fastball, the playing coach [a well-respected all-round good guy], while watching us fumble/boot the ball around while imitating some sort of infield drill or other, would occasionally announce: "C'mon you panty-waists, we're gonna do this 'til you get it right!" I found it kinda amusing/funny and never heard any of the other panty-waists complain [even afterward in the pub]. Years later, when I mentioned it to my wife, she couldn't see any humour in it whatsoever. Go figure??
[And for the link to DC, my wife who has almost no interest in hockey would check into Coach's Corner, if I had it on, to see what his fashion consultant had come up with.]

.... and another "Where's-Don-Cherry-when-you-need-him?" moment in our household this a.m. Some expert or other was expounding on CBC radio about some aspect or other of Covid-19, and what jumps out but the word "collegiality"?
I had made arrangements to meet a friend from Thunder Bay [we get together a couple of times a decade] at Virden in early April, where his grandson might be taking part in the might-be-held regional Telus Cup [under 17?18? AAA hockey]. While I frequently adopt an "If it happens, it happens" approach, I kinda had my heart set on this.

Yep, that's pretty close to half way... but, only me and MR ??? ... might still have to further sweeten the pot. In our back-and-forth I told him to make sure he was making hotel reservations in Virden and not Verdun. Now I might end up having to make sure one of us doesn't find his way to Canora.

I won't be getting any modeling offers for my smile. One dentist was fumbling over how to be "say it nicely." I offered: "less than perfect occlusion." He readily agreed. I played with one of those hot-water-mould-it-yourself mouth guards, but no facemask.... one would think that I'd have been "lucky" enuff to take a stick or puck in the mush.... but ixnay.
