One thing I don't "get" is the necessity to mold players to fit a preconceived notion of what a "contending" team should look like.   Too much em-fass-iss on having a certain  number of scorers, grinders, energy players (?), top-4 or top-6, first/second string goalie, etc., etc.    But, otoh, maybe that much specialization is the only path to success??   Or maybe it's just easier to copy than actually coach??    My impression is that the old-boys-club mentality is still quite influential.

I dunno, Owen. After that game he was on track for a 246 goal season! But he's young. I wonder if the Habs' coaching has something to do with it - are they that bad a player development? Certainly their handling of Price a couple of years ago seemed to have burned him out. We sure got our expectations raised when Poehling scored all those goals. But he seemed to be quite the sniper, picking the spot that Anderson couldn't defend. I hope he isn't being coached into incompetence.

This team needs a change, starting with the owner. There was a time when the Molson family knew hockey. That knowledge and spirit doesn't seem to have been passed down.

So the Habs blew another three goal lead. "The fish rots from the head."

I know diddly-squat about the business end of running a team, but I wonder whether a $10million  goalie is $4million better than a $6million one.   Without knowing specifically  how the salary cap works, I think it can hamstring teams that don't use it wisely for a considerable time into the future???

P.S.  Mete looked like a midget* level player, going for Seguin's how-do-ya-do.   [That's not the way DC would have coached him to do it.  wink  ]

* = I hope I can still use that terminology [for a couple months more??] .... although I'm fine with the changes.

Edit: ...regardless, it's time for SNB .... soundless NCAA hockey  on TV.

Edit #2:  And I think it was Kovalchuck that contributed to the Stars' tying goal ...by NOT getting it out of the zone...probably was gonna put 'er off the glass, but then thought better of it.  cheeky

Blackhawks in Cowtown tonight. Still like watching DC’s “pansy” players - Kane, Keith. La-dee-da types...he hated the quick shifty guys from his playing days cuz they'd make him look foolish, and he held that grudge forever.

Dennis who?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_O%27Brien_(ice_hockey) Oh, yeah. he "broke an NHL record for the most teams played for in one season". Indispensable. A real "journeyman" player. wink

I wonder why Bergevin is still around. frown

DC had Obie, a defenceman, in Boston,,,,he’s the guy that Cherry told to always fire it off the glass to get it out ,,,Dennis would more often than not fire it over the glass into the crowd, or blast it so hard it would end up an icing call. A former St. Catharines Blackhawk during the Marcel Dionne years.

I didn’t know ‘dwarf’ was a more proper term than “midget”... learn something every day. If that’s what they want I’m all for it.
“It’s a term Vivek Bhagria is all too familiar with. Bhagria, an athlete who has competed at multiple World Dwarf Games competitions has been called a “midget” much of his life.

“It’s offensive, it hurts you inside,” Bhagria said.”

Having lived under the derogatory moniker of “banjo picker” all my life I’ve developed some thick skin. But I understand why not everyone likes to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.

Apparently it was [is?] kosher.   This is from Vernon, BC about 7 years ago:

P.S. Somebody should have told Gallagher about the possibility of a stick shortage.... I think he was "showing how much he cares" as he was leaving the ice after the game.   wink

Gangs of hockey stick pushers battling each other. Smuggling hockey sticks across the border. Wanton mayhem and murder - punished by going to the sin bin.

I think “Pal Hal” Ballard described either Laurie Boschman (because he was a devout Christian) or Inge Hammerstrom as a guy playing like a “skirt”.

"La premiere etoile... David Ayres."    I had the Hab's game and the Scotties on in the background, so unfortunately I  missed this: https://globalnews.ca/news/6586173/hurricanes-david-ayres-zamboni-goalie/    Will he get a spot on <hockeydb.com>?

And in keeping with the off-topic aspect of this thread, although inexplicably nobody has asked, I've got a proposal for Astro players from the last couple of years.  I understand that some players feel that Astro players should be held personally accountable to some degree.  I figure that with the technology available [I'd say Bluetooth, but I'm in over my head], it should be easy enough to have a cacophony of garbage pail thumping, etc., etc. played loudly thru earbuds from the time the player steps into the on-deck circle until he returns to the dugout, for the whole of this season [regardless of the dude's current team].   What say you "experts"?

re D. Ayres. I have to agree with Burkie Burrhead who was ticked off saying there has to be a bunch of ex pros in the GTA that are younger and much better qualified to be a game double-back-up goalie than a 42 year-old ex-Jr.B zamboni driver. It does look bad on the NHL.

Lots of play on the David Ayres thing - a debacle for the Leafs.

Lots of people commenting about the Leafs being beaten by a Zamboni driver - that's where they should look when they need a backup goalie. Or how any beer league goalie could say, "I can beat the Leafs."

As for the Astros thing, they should strip them of the WS title.

The world unfolded as it should Saturday night - the Habs won and the Leafs lost.

Unfortunately, it didn't unfold that way today. MB - Moron Bergevin - traded Kovalchuk to Washington for a third round pick. MB is tied with Dubas as the most boneheaded GM in the league.

Dave Ayres is a practice goalie when the Maple Leafs club are at their rink in Toronto.
He's not some simpleton greenie. And for the Marlies.
