Actually I'm glad to see he's doing well.  Is Geekie an example of GMs and coaches thinking that players have to fit within a fairly restrictive notion of what's "required" to form a competitive team?   I get a kick (?) out of the analysts [dunno their hockey backgrounds, but I suspect they weren't world-beaters] regurgitating stuff like authentic know-it-alls ...  "a bottom six forward / a good back-up goal tender / etc. "

It's not quite that simple in this case. Two seasons ago, the Broons were basically underwater when it came to the salary cap, and this right after losing Bergeron and Krecji to retirement. Sweeney coughed up Taylor Hall for a bag of pucks in what was essentially a cap dump. He then went dumpster diving and picked up players like Kevin Shattenkirk and James Van Riemsdyk for just about league minimum. Meantime, Seattle chose not to make Geekie a qualifying offer, so he was a free agent.

He had shown enough promise that the one even somewhat signifcant contract Sweeney offered was 2 X $2mm. Geekie played reasonably well the first year, and the whole team played way beyond expectations. Geekie started last season without making much of an impression, and then poured it on in the second half of the season, especially after the bloodbath. He ended up with 33 goals and 57 points, second only to Pastrnak in total points. It was reasonably viewed as a career year.

There was also some doubt as to whether he could match that under his new contract - was '24-25 a one-off, or was it transitional? There were obviously questions on both side of the table... so in the end, Geekie agreed to a 6 X $5.5mm contract. He's got his term, he's got his FU money, and he's got a fair amount of no-movement protection. Hindsight is always 20:20, but it sure looks like he left significant money on the table.

'Way back when I was trying to play fastball I guess we weren't doing some sort of infield drill or other to the [playing-]coach's satisfaction.   He calmly informed us: "C'mon you pantywaists... we're gonna do this 'til you get it right."  It was all I could do to keep from laughing ... 'Twas a long time ago, but part of our B.P.E. education was some rudimentary stuff re. concussions.   Typical questions were: day of the week / town we're playing in / who's winning the game / etc.  The instructor cautioned us to make sure the person asking the questions knew the answers.

I'm pretty sure that I've had 3 or 4 in my time, but was never diagnosed like they do nowadays. If I shake my head back and forth it hurts.

I have my doubts about karma.

Speaking of Calgary, the Flames just claimed former Bruin Johnny Beecher off waivers.

Us Broons fans aren't all that unhappy to see him go. Despite being a first-round pick, I was amazed when he made the Big Club out of camp last season, and even more amazed when they resigned him this year (albeit at just about league minimum). I had watched him a number of times with the Baby Bruins in Providence and was never exactly impressed.

Upsides: he's big, reasonably fast, not awful on the PK and can hold his own on the faceoff dot. He's also inexpensive, and by all accounts is an affable guy who's nice to be around, on and off the ice.

Downsides: low scoring, not particularly creative, and seems to get caught out of position a lot on the five-on-five. For all his size and speed, he's not exactly what you'd call a power forward.

I'd say this move works well for both the Broons and the Flames. Beecher's ceiling, it seems to me, is as a fourth-line forward for a not-very-good NHL team. Enter Calgary. And with half of the top six out hurt and Charlie McAvoy out for God-only-knows how long what with dentist appointments, the B's needed both cap and roster space.

And speaking of Calgary.... Bedard looked pretty good last nite .... more assertive / less tentative / ??? IMNSHumbleO.   I don't keep close tabs, but I surely/Shirley/?? hope it continues.   [But, but, but, he can take a nite off now and again ... like when they play les 'abs.]

Thanks Chuck ..... I knew he surfaced in the CFL.  At Clemson he was a raw talent, very gifted physically, but just didn't have the experience to get a lot of playing time.  He followed one of our former coaches to South Florida.  I didn't follow him there, but I don't think he had a lot of success.  I'm glad that he has continued to develop and landed neasr his hometown.

Two of Bedard’s goals last night were of the un-scintillating (thnx Danny Gallivan) variety, but ya’s gotta be good to be lucky as they say in Vegas. The blazing wrister on his second goal was Gordie Howe-worthy. After lots of criticism last year for under-performing, at least to the expectations of the proverbial peanut gallery, he’s on his way to leaving them in the dust.

Wow, an exciting finish to the Ducks / Bruins tilt. Lots of chances at both ends,, I see Geekie is earning his $ and then some.

Puck drop was after beddie-bye time, so all I can do is read the morning papers. Same will be true for the next two games.

Sounds like a hard-fought game. Naturally, disappointed with the result. But yes, Geekie is the real deal.

Dunno how much attention you've paid but Boston is currently playing without three of its normal top six forwards, and Charlie McAvoy is out indefinitely, recovering from facial surgery after taking a deflected slapshot to the mouth. And this is a TOUGH road trip....
