If the experts that issue the licenses see fit to let companies operate as you ^^ describe, then who am I to disagree? ![]()
If mentoring under an experienced driver is a good thing, wouldn't it be reasonable for the experts to require it as an integral part of the licensing process? Are the real idjuts the guys that create loopholes, or the guys that exploit them?
Yep, one should be issued a temporary learners licence first,, then trucking companies should be mandated (gasp, gub’m’nt overreach!) to train the rookie further for a month which would be documented for the transportation dept. There’s idjuts on both sides,, but becuz there are always driver shortages the proper procedures sit on the back burner. What we get are banjo pickers from Kingston getting sideswiped by inexperienced truck drivers ,, and worst of all , a bus load of hockey players from Humboldt, SK getting rammed by a new driver who missed a huge STOP sign and killing 13 teenagers. The railways/railroads aren't much better,, just ask texican here on the Hangout. Young people nowadays don't want a job that demands long hours and many days away from home; is why they keep experimenting with "driverless" trucks.

Nowadays it's about a week , like I did. Then they sent me solo to Manhattan, the idjuts
Irrespective of sleep management and time zones, I don't think ANYONE should be sent solo into Manhattan without at least a month of mentoring, even if you don't drive a rig and actually rode in on a commuter train from a suburb 30 miles away.
Speaking from experience here. It was more than 50 years ago, and it was a lot of fun in retrospect, but...

Which is why I question the "wherewithal" (?) / motivation / ???? of those who rely on mocking / ridicule / sarcasm / diversionary techniques / etc. /etc. to counter someone pointing out "questionable*" decisions being made by experts.
* or even downright goofy ones.
Btw, what are the two sides to safe, efficient transport? [That's a rhetorical question ... I got yer drift.

Edit: 13?? 16?? MB is currently having a difference of opinion w.r.t. #5 crossing #1 Hwy [17 deaths IIRC]. The local experts want an overpass, the government experts want an R-cut ... I'm not too sure what the local farmers want. I think a good-enough "solution" would be a median strip wide enough to accommodate the longest vehicle that might use the crossing. In any even none of these would address the apparent cause of the accident .... but all would show that we did "something."

Well, they did send me there with a straight truck,, 26’ box , 9 speed Western Star. I was getting close and my dispatcher who had done umpteen trips into NYC sends me a message saying drop your air bags (suspension) before going through the Lincoln Tunnel otherwise you’ll set off the alarm and they’ll make you u-turn back,,, argh…
So I get into Manhattan and I’m at the building construction site (near Columbus Circle) where I’m delivering parts. I go up to the gate and this tough guy asks me what’s the code,,, I never got one, it’s a Union job , of course, and we’re not a union company. So he growls,”Take your Canadian crap outta here and get yer a^s back to the border.” I finally have to phone their Union office on Long Island, give the guy details, and he gives me a code. I deliver the parts, go around the block and it’s narrow,, a lady is halfway in a curb parking spot,, & I inch past but catch her side mirror and bend it right back. argh… she gets all my details, I promise to pay for it when she mails me the invoice,, which I did with monthly payments over the next 10 months. My company never heard a word about it.
So that’s my first solo trip as a steering wheel- holder.

Well, thanx for pointing that out about my past reliance on experts. Somehow I think you're wanting to go back to Covid, vaxxes, convoys, Virden,,, but I've been wrong before.
Hwy5 and the TCH could use your solution,, ,, but my all-time favourite is a,,,, wait for it,,,,,, roundabout!
btw, did you know that New Jersey has "jug-handles"?

Re: "... I think you're wanting to go back to Covid, vaxxes, convoys, Virden,,, but I've been wrong before."
Oh, just generally anywhere the expertise of experts is questionable .... those ^^, plus fighting forest fires, "stopping" when there is only one vehicle in the vicinity, rules for bicycle riding in rural areas, police investigating police, searching landfills for body parts, government sanctioned apartheid, police and/or crown prosecutors continuing to withhold info of public interest, forbidding recycling/reusing/repurposing at municipal landfills, etc., etc., etc.
And, fwiw, now you might as well add [many] traffic circles to ^^ list. I dunno if you're familiar with the smallish one at the west side of Portage la Prairie. In light traffic it's okay for vehicles the size of our Grand Cherokee.... and even the GC pulling the SurfSide, when traffic is more lighter-er, but I'd not want to be a farmer trying to maneuver my tractor/air seeder/fertilizer wagon through it [Though in fairness, I haven't checked ... there may be alternative routes for T/AS/FW and their ilk].

Ahh, yes. That sounds familiar. I've got a few eye-opening (well, at least, they opened mine) NYC union stories of my own. Probably not to be shared here, though I will say that a billfold that's thick enough will generally ease one's way by such obstructions.

WHERE'S JACKIE ??
A fair question. I missed the turning of the page. And just to keep things timely, one presumes all of those travel cases were delivered by truck.

If ever there was a candidate for long term counseling and anger management it would be Tommy Pham. The poor guy had a terribly rough upbringing,, he’s been on 10 teams,, and yesterday’s weird brouhaha is just another example.
