Doug gave a talk at our university auditorium in the early Sixties, after the union-busting trade. I recall his comments on how dirty Gordie Howe played. Doug had a construction company - those guys needed an extra source of income. He lived a couple of blocks from us, and his house was the best one on his block.

True enough to me. We were just in T.O. for a friend's 80th birthday celebration yesterday. We parked the car and I put $8 in loonies and toonies to pay for parking. The machine ate the coins, gave me back one toonie, shut down, and basically started over, telling me that I could use plastic, too. So, $8 again via the credit card, and $6 in coins - for what, a finder's fee? Well, at least we found a parking spot.

And my vision of visiting the Twelfth Fret was just that - a glimpse of it as we drove past, heading back to Kingston.

Down the Danforth? Then over to Kingston Rd. (Hwy 2) ? .the days before the Mac-Cartier freeway…

Almost. The celebration was at Danforth near Chester, so driving east got us past the Twelfth Fret. We kept going to Kingston Road, then I took a wrong turn, wandered around, and finally got onto the 401. We eventually got onto the actual highway from the collector lanes and got tangled up in the usual creeping traffic jam. Things, as usual, finally got moving somewhere in the vicinity of Oshawa. We had dinner at the Buttermilk Cafe in Cobourg before finally getting home to feed the starving cats.

Heading into T.O. in the morning/early afternoon, the Mrs. got onto the Don Valley Parkway (a.k.a. the Don Valley Parking Lot) and we crept down to Bloor/Danforth. We passed the latest suicide barrier on the Bloor-Danforth Viaduct. I used to ride the subway across it when I lived in Rochdale and went to teacher's college. Whoever designed that bridge was brilliant - incorporating a lower level for subway trains decades before the subway was built (completed in 1918, Bloor subway line opened in 1966).

Highway 2 now goes through suburbia, four lanes with loads of traffic lights, north of the 401. It eventually goes through the Greenbelt, that Dopey Doug wanted to give to developers to pave over. Citizen backlash stopped that.

The winter after we moved to Kingston I went back to T.O. to supervise on my school's ski trip. At 6:30 a.m., at the east end of Oshawa, the 401 was at a complete stop. I thought that, had we lived in the 'burbs, I would probably have already died of a heart attack. Glad I never lived that lifestyle. Living right in T.O. we walked and took transit (2 short blocks from the subway) and I cycled everywhere. We didn't even have drivers' licenses.

^^^^^. Tell me about it,, no arterial freeways, other than the Gardiner and the DVP, to move traffic quick enough out of TO.. I did my tractor-trailer road test on Christmas Eve day ,2002,, out of the Keele/401 MTO office,,, out onto the 401 with fast but heavy traffic for a mile or so, then a flip and back to Keele. I got lucky and it went smooth enough , even after going over 2 curbs with the trailer wheels getting out of the narrow lanes on the MTO grounds. A few months later they quit using that facility for testing and moved it to Brampton where the setup was much more rookie-driver-friendly (much to the relief of MTO nerve-racked testers, I’m assuming…lol).

... and furthermore,,grrrr,,  there are 2 Loblaws wharehouses in the area, one in Cambridge, the other in Pickering,, I'm coming up from the U.S. through Detroit/Windsor and have to deliver part of the load in Cambridge,, the rest in Pickering and it's Friday afternoon. I'll let you guess if I made the appointment time for Pickering in time. 14 hours later they get me in a door. 

"Fast but heavy traffic" only happens when you get past Oshawa. Before that it's slow, stop-and-start. We had "fast but heavy traffic" once in our first car ('02 Accord) and we ran over a dead deer. We couldn't avoid it - traffic was bumper-to-bumper and we couldn't change lanes. But it had been hit so many times that the impact wasn't so bad. You drive through stop-and-start traffic for ages and finally get moving and you never know what was the cause of the delay.

I have to wonder if the truck driver who knocked us off the 401 in January even took a driver's test. We were lucky to get pushed over to the Jersey barriers - the only visible damage was where the trailer hit us. Seven-and-a-half months and we're just getting around to a repair date. We switched repair shops 'cause the first was so slow.

We were on the 401 today. Speed limits have gone from 100 to 110 (km/h, that is). Oh, and, when the truck hit us and we got going again, we saw the big sign in the air at the ONroute stop. It said BEER SOLD HERE. Made us feel so good about being hit. Those signs are distractions, too. And Dopey Doug wants to tunnel under the 401 now and make a duplicate, underground 401 through T.O.

People are telling horror stories about truck drivers these days. One experienced trucker encountered one who asked him to turn his truck around for him - didn't know how.

I figure the experts [i.e. the ones who issue licenses, in this instance]] know what they're doing.
