We asked for a TablEdit Forum, but we didn't get it.Today it is difficult to make a search at BHO if you have TablEdit question - especially if you are new to TablEdit and are not sure about all words and expression that are used. So I will try to bring a little order of the chaos, and make a list of earlier TablEdit questions here at BHO. I scrolled through the last months question in the Tab forum, and a made a quick search by "TablEdit" and put down the relevant topics from the first three (edit: five) pages.

If you have references to more threads just contact me and I will add.

I made the list very short with just a few key words and the link. I will try to keep this post updated.

Nice work. I am surprised there was little support when Tabledit is the ubiquitous sheet music tool for banjo pickers. And so often a topic of discussion here.

Excellent video Sean--I use another method for the D tuner effect but it's all the same, just different methods. Here's my latest arrangement where I use the "Hand Clap" percussion (which is another discussion)...Jack

Last time I tried to help and made a sticky, all I got were gripes and complaints so I took it off and it went the way of all posts.....  off the page.   I doubt this would be any different.

Hi Sherry,

Larry Kuhns taught me all I know about Tabledit. He is simply the best right arm Matthieu ever had or has...Jack

Here's the best link for Tabledit problems: http://el-kay.com/tabledit/index.htm

The difference, Sherry, is that this is a topical list of links.  I belong to two other forums (non-musical, non-banjo) that post such lists as a "sticky", usually re-titled something like "Before You Post Asking About ____, Check This List".  If the OP is willing to keep the list up to date, with the help of others, it's a worthwhile addition.

The last sticky failed because several questions and answers were mixed. I think the intention when first suggesting a TablEdit Forum was that some of us saw a need for a more coherent "collection" of the TablEdit questions. One way was to try to put all questions in one thread, but it soon showed up that it was not a good solution. This new attempt is still an experiment, but it only the first post with the index that is of interest. The other discussion in this thread is more about how the index can be better and tips about links to add to the first post (which I can edit whenever I want). The TablEdit questions will be posted in separate threads, and only a link to them in this thread (in the first post). I think this approach have a possibility, but you never know what can happen at BHO.....

Sherry, it's an exaggeration that all you received were gripes and complaints. That's not what the record shows. There were plenty of folks who thought it was a good idea (although still inadequate to directly address the stated need) but still, it was an attempt to address the need and folks freely said so.

What happened was you pulled the plug after some stated, rightly I believe, the sticky would not be effective. But at least it was something as opposed to nothing. I think you overacted to criticism and your solution was to stop trying and pull the plug.

I myself pointed out a deficiency with the sticky, but praised the effort anyway. It's possible to feel both things at once.

It's a good idea to make this thread a sticky. Janalov has stated he will attempt to keep it updated, that's an extremely generous offer on his part which should not ignored or diminished. Don't look this gift horse in the mouth. It's something, as opposed to nothing, so I agree with the others here.

Solutions to community needs are not things like light switches you can turn on and off at a whim. It may take some time to develop a good balance, and this thread seems like another sincere — and purely organic — effort in that direction.

It's a good idea to make this a sticky. It's community-based, the need came from the community, this solution came from the community, so why not give it a try again? This complied list of topics makes a great deal of sense, doesn't it?

If at first you don't succeed ... (you know the rest) ... until something better can come along.

Okay, we'll try it and see.  Far bid for me to keep an idea which could be a good one from coming to fruition.  Sticky it is.

TablEdit does not have an index. I spend a lot of time trying to find out how to accomplish relatively simple things. Creating and maintaining an index for BHO members would probably eliminate many tabledit questions sent to BHO. At the present time I spend hours looking, get disgusted, and start experimenting. I usually figure things out, but the process is very time consuming and frustrating.

Having the tabledit index as a downloadable in the tabs section would help users like myself. BTW, I am spent all my professional career working as a computer programmer/systems programmer so I have spent decades working with software, and reading technical manuals.
If I were a younger person and just using tabledit, I would have created an index just like Mr. Janolov has built.

How does one properly format a .tef file for printing? I have a downloaded tab that prints incredibly small.... I've been trying to figure it out, and the manual is somewhat impenetrable... can anyone offer some guidance?

I've seen examples of tabs/notations on this site that it seems people have simply taken a pic with their phone and posted. All I have is a smartphone, no computer, and am trying to figure out how I can post tabs this way. Is this possible or do I need to download a certain app, etc. I'm very untech savy and posting a pic of my tabs would be the most convenient thing if possible. Any advice on how I can do this?

I have the full paid for copy  of Tabledit running on windows 10 and its fantastic however I  downloaded the latest "TablEdit v3.00 a0" It works fine but when I go to my *.tef files they were still opening in the old version 2.78. I have since uninstalled  all versions and re downloaded  and installed the latest version 3 but now the *.tef files are not associated with an application and if i right click to " open with" there are no applications to select. I can of course open my tefs from the Tabledit application itself i.e File, Open. I have also tried the "windows apps and features but there are no apps listed to associate with. I have again now deleted version 3 and reinstalled version 2.78 and it works as normal.

I also noticed that a tef file I saved with version 3 will not open in version 2.78

I have emailed Matthieu twice since April 1st but got no reply, ... any ideas from the Gurus please

Conic, have you checked the Tabledit Users Forum ?  I think I recall some discussions lately about your problem.  This forum is the registered users discussion forum and has been really busy as of late with the switch to V3.

Comic, when you right click on the *.tef file in windows file explorer, click on "more apps", then scroll all the way down and click on "Look for another app on this PC" then go find the Tabledit.exe file in the program files directory... This is how I usually associate files to a program, when windows doesn't know what to use...

Thanks Norm, Unfortunately there were no options to choose another program but I have found a workaround.
Instead of deleting it, I have renamed the version 2.78 folder in windows program files (x86) and then installed version 3, all files both version 2.78 and 3 are now associated with version 3 and they all open, it must be something to do with some attribute and windows program files database lookup list.

really appreciate the suggestions

Every once in a while I open TablEdit and attempt something, but quickly run into little difficulties and give up. Not complaining here, just staying what happens.

What I would love would be a manual for banjo players - call it perhaps "TalbEdit for Banjo Dummies". TablEdit is SO comprehensive with a ton of features for virtually every possible way to make a sound on almost any instrument and music style, and impatient banjo players like me can get lost quickly.

One issue is that I tend towards a "notey" style, and getting that right in tab takes a lot of work and attention to detail; neither are a strong suite for me!

Anyway, I'll dive in again, and I've opened those (much appreciated!) links in tabs and perhaps I'll have better luck this time.
