Here's one of my favorite Bill Monroe tunes. This recording was used to test a particular configuration of our recording studio. In addition, we like to make recordings when we get an arrangement close to the way we would like it to be, so that we don't forget it later. I suggest listening to this with headphones, or on a good hi-fi, as the bass part might not come out well (like on a laptop computer's speakers). Bob plays a mean bass fiddle. This is our version of the tune otherwise known as "Danny Boy" or "The Londonderry Air." My dad recorded this as "My Gentle Harp" with The Boys In The Band back in 1987, and so it is titled the same here. We used this version to test isolation between the bass and banjo mics in our studio. The bass enters in the 2nd half, with the 1st half being solo banjo. Personnel: Banjo - Frank M. Wing III, Double Bass - Robert Hall

Banjo enters following a double bass intro. As usual, listen with good hi-fi speakers or headphones (not on laptop speakers). Otherwise the bass part will not sound as intended. Personnel: Banjo - Frank M. Wing III, Double Bass - Robert Hall

My attempt at playing Chet Atkins style on the banjo. I learned part of this from my Dad, who heard Bill Keith play something similar in his dorm room back in the 60's, but never recorded it. The slow part at the beginning and the following Chet Atkins style solo is what I learned from my dad/Bill Keith. The rest of the banjo part I had to make up. I came up with the backup for the bass solo after having watched one of jazz guitar genius, Joe Pass' instructional videos. For the next banjo solo, Bob imitated Chet Atkins' thumb on the bass, while I mildly played with the melody. I wanted the ending to sound like something Bela Fleck might do, so I waited until the end to add the familiar "Mr. Sandman" beginning arpeggios, and then morphed them into my impression of Bela's playing. We used this tune to test out a new ribbon mic & preamp for the bass. It is very tricky to use, and we didn't really get the sound quite right (at least for the bass solo), but we'll keep at it. Here's a tune by The Dillards (a.k.a. The Darlings, on the Andy Griffith Show). The melody, chords, and lyrics are similar to, but not quite the same as another song, called "The Leatherwing Bat," recorded by Pete Seeger and various other folk singers. I was inspired to try this tune after seeing a video on YouTube, posted by a girl by the name of Molly Tuttle. Here it is (she actually sings it, while playing in a somewhat unusual clawhammer style on guitar): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HM29Vb6A_z8

Learned this one from my Dad (Member: frankwing). First recording with our new Neumann mic. 3 mics on the bass & 3 mics on the banjo. Deleted the old version. Bob rerecorded the bass solo and applied his new Ozone mastering software. Much improved, I think. Personnel: Banjo - Frank M. Wing III Double Bass - Robert Hall

Another one I learned from my dad, BHO member frankwing. Even though it was written in the early 1500s, he thought it made a good banjo tune. I tried to keep all of his ideas, but also make it work with a bowed double bass. Unlike Bill Keith's version in C, with the widely voiced, torture chords, this one's in the handy key of G, with more typical banjo chords. However, the entire first section is played with false harmonics, a form of stunt playing I learned from my dad, requiring steady, precisely coordinated hands, and great mental focus, in order to play more than just a few notes in a row, without messing up.

Christmas Card: 2012. I'm doing my best impression of Aubrey Haynie on my fiddle here. We decided to create a musical Christmas card to send to all of our friends and family, and also test out our banjo mics on my fiddle. Additionally, to test out our long range offensive capabilities, we enlisted my dad to record the banjo & guitar tracks from his home in TN. In this updated version, we removed the cardboard box backing the banjo solo and replaced it with some fiddle licks, and filtering adjustments were made to the bass track. Thanks to Dale Ramsey for the voice part. His was more believable than mine. Merry Christmas! Personnel: Fiddle - Frank M. Wing III, Banjo & Guitar - Frank M. Wing Jr., Double Bass - Robert Hall

What could this possibly have to do with banjo music?... I used my banjo picks. I actually have no idea how to properly and safely operate a ukulele, so I just applied my banjo technique (Scruggs/3-Finger). I also posted a version with a bass part, but I believe that this version can stand on its own. So, when we visited with my dad on the 4th of July holiday, he showed up with a baritone ukulele that he had owned but never mentioned for the past 40 years. Apparently, my mother needed it for some college course, in which she was supposed to play an instrument while singing a song. He had intended for it to be something that the kids could pluck around on, because it is smaller than most guitars, and easier on small fingers. I was somewhat fascinated by it, since I had never even heard of a baritone ukulele, and had no clue how to tune or play such a thing. So we took it back home and it sat in the corner of my office, staring at me for a whole day. Then, I decided that I was going to get some strings and figure out how to make it work. After a few days I had learnt me up this here cowboy song, appropriately entitled "The Cowboy Waltz."

This is our impression of what might result from Ralph Stanley and jazz legend Ray Brown being stranded together at an airport, in Hawaii, during a blizzard. I got the tune from the old Tony Trischka album, "Bluegrass Light." It also appears on Tony's compilation album "The Early Years." After hearing the opening guitar solo, I had a notion that the tune might work on the baritone ukulele. I had to completely rewrite the harmony, since my uke has two fewer strings than a guitar. I used my banjo picks, and a played it in a pseudo-Chet Atkins-style. Personnel: Baritone Ukulele - Frank M. Wing III, Double Bass - Robert Hall

I got the idea for this after stumbling across a recording by Red Rector and Jethro Burns, which I had forgotten that I owned.
