In the wee hours of the morning I sat not too long ago with a neighbor on his porch. It was a warm Mississippi night. Somewhere closeby a mockingbird sang as if the day had not alloted enough time to finish his tune.
As often happens when the day has far passed ending our conversation took the backroads. Those places that in earlier hours might go untravelled. I was in my usual role of listener and anyway,I could tell he was thinking profound thoughts he needed to share.
I didn't flinch when he commented that he believed in Super Heroes. Knowing he was still a big fan of some of the popular action adventures most likely left over from his youth I had to ask, "You mean like Spiderman or Batman?" Yes that was exactly what he meant. We just don't see them,he said.
I didn't really know what to say so I made some kind of mention of weather or some other topic meant to stir us away from the latter. As unusual as it seemed at the moment I have often thought back on his remarks that early morning. What could he really have meant? I think I know now.
You see in the stories popularized mostly in comic books, these people who do these marvelous acts of courage and kindness never want their identities known. While some cannot resist blowing there own horn and pointing out their good deeds, these heroes do not.I think this must be a requirement to being one of them.
The reason I have returned to this matter and wanted to share it with you is because I asked a friend yesterday if he thought it would be alright for me to mention by name all the people who have helped us here on this site.He replied that it might make some uncomfortable. It was then that I realized what I had almost done. I nearly gave up the identities of many Super Heroes. I will stay quiet because you know who you are. I know too.
