We’ve gone to smaller modern plastic Yamaha speakers, and a single mic, into a small mixer. We also have a small two shelf wheeled dolly to put it all on. It all fits in the trunk of a Honda Accord. We use it at churches, and outdoor gigs, and there have been no volume or sound issues. Just make sure you have a good wind sock for the mic, if it’s windy out.
Dave built me a banjo buggy. The banjo fits on it and is held by a bungee cord. It has big wheels so it goes over curbs and other obstacles fairly easily. My song book fit on the back of the buggy as did a folding chair.
As far as gear, I was lucky and never had to have my own, but used whatever was available at whatever gig we were at.

Good advice!
Would be VERY nice to have a regular gig in a bar, or some such.
BUT.... we're also in our 80's and can't do more than about an hour.
HOW-EVAH! We can stop hauling a couple creates of banjos to the Art & Crap festivals, and just take a few light items.
AND!! When we get a gig at a local Retirement Community, we can stop over several days early, and see if they already HAVE a sound system available.
Since we went to a single mic set up, with two 10” plastic modern speakers, and a small mixer… we are kind of kicking our self in the ass for messing with so much stupid gear in the past. Not only that, but we are realizing, that even our current set up, which works well, even in a average sized church, is WAY MORE THAN ENOUGH for a small gig, such as an old folks home cafeteria or a senior center. Something like an 8” battery powered speaker and the single mic would work fine. And you could carry that in one hand, and your banjo in the other, and still blow the roof off the joint, and not even need to find an outlet.
back several years ago a friend of mine invested in one of those bose pa systems with a bass and tower speaker,,, i played on it a couple of times and it was awesome.. easy to handle and set up.. 1 mic and good to go. weighs 39 lbs total.. so a fold out hand truck in one hand and you banjo in the other ,,, 1 trip... to the stage ....
