New to the Group

From Delaware on 6/17/2014 1:08:08 PM

I saw this group and HAD to join!  Great idea for encouragement.

Are most of you claw hammer players? I am learning Scruggs style, and it is great fun, and a great challenge.  But I love the sound of claw hammer too, and will probably also try that at some point.

Well welcome to the group! I love the sound of clawhammer, and play in both bluegrass and clawhammer styles. What tunes are you working on lately?

I am pretty new to all this, and I'm using the Murphy Method material. Currently working on the lead for Roll in my Sweet Baby's Arms, and having a blast with it! I've learned a bunch of songs, and my next challenge is to try jamming with others. I'm not sure I'm quite ready to add much, but I want to give it a try, as soon as I get up the nerve.

I see that we are on opposite sides of the country . . . .how's the banjo environment near you?

banjo environment? Huh??? All kidding aside, I've seen one other person with a banjo- it was a teen age girl walking down the street wearing her banjo. Gave me hope. It seems like I'm the only banjo/mandolin/autoharpist in my part of Southern California! How's it where you are?

Howdy Delaware and welcome! I'm Gingher from AZ and it's great to meet you.

Two things you can do to get ready to play with others is to look up any of the number of backing track websites and start to play along. Blues tracks will mostly follow a I, IV, V pattern and are easy to follow. So in G it would be G, C and D. You just play along and make stuff up or use some of the licks from the songs you have already learned.

The second thing I like to do is put on the Blues show on KJZZ in Phoenix on Sunday nights. It runs from 6-9pm and songs are in all different keys, so you figure them out as they come on. You might have a similar program where you are.

When you go play with others, you will be quicker on the ball since you've been practicing to songs that are in time.

Glad to have you in our group and it sounds like you have a great start already!

BanjoBelle - here in Delaware, there are enough jams that I could (will) participate, once I get to the point where I can pay with others. I sometimes take my guitar to local jams, and that is fun. But I am really looking forward to the day when I can show up with a banjo and actually play it!
Gingher - thanks for the welcome, and for the tips! Playing along with the radio sounds like a great idea. I'm going to give it a try. At least if I crash and burn, I'll be home where nobody else has to hear it. :-)

Since you're already a musician jamming with others, you'll do great incorporating banjo!

Hey wow I just noticed that there is a "Jukebox" tab at the top of our profiles--and if you look under the playlists there are a bunch of backing tracks!! Totally going to use those!
