I am a newbie,and I have a JHartford Banjo.Just learning how to play this gift,from my husband.
I live on an island,and not too many banjo players around here. Looking forward to being a part of this Ladies Group. I love the picture also.

Jaimie! How are you? Not many banjo pickers in Southern California either. What style(s) are you playing? Are you learning from books,a teacher? I teach beginning banjo via online chat,BTW. I have students as far away as Maine.

Welcome Jaimie--what a great present! We have all levels of players, so you can ask just about anything and will probably get some good advice. I'd recommend Banjo Belle's lessons for sure!

BanjoBelle,I don't really play anything. I love both styles,and don't have so much trouble with the right hand,but,I still keep trying to play my banjo like a guitar...Ha!
I seriously do love both Bluegrass and Frailing(is that the right term??) Fell in love with the original Kingston Trio banjo,played by Dave Guard. I have a lot of books,cd's,dvd's,but,it isn't really the same as having a teacher(more feedback). Maybe as soon as I get comfortable with the bluegrass and frailing(Pete Seeger??),I will be ready for lessons from you.Well,you will have one on Orcas Island in Western,Wash,when I feel like it is the right time.
I would have thought there would be a lot of players down there. My fiddle teacher went to a lot of festivals.

All of you seem so accomplished!! Something to try for,with your support. I am just trying to get used to the alternate picking strings,Bluegrass Rolls,etc,and then alternating strings and using a down only motion,never up for the other style. A lot to learn. I think you either love this instrument or hate it. Ha!! and yes,it was a wonderful present. Elderly Instruments,used,and EC condition. It was a custom made. She is VERY cool,but,right now,I am over equipped and undereducated.

Gingher-just so you know,I always offer one free 30 min session per person. This allows me to see where the person is at and what they're lookin for. Dvds and books are helpful indeed. As a friendly tip,I'll ask you not to fall in the rabbit hole that many prespective students fall into which is the "I have all these books & DVDs,and by gum,when I get to be super good at playing,why,then I'll look for a teacher!" For whatever reason,there's a lot of players out there that fall into this mind trap of "Once I'm a super good player I'll be ready for the teacher".
This thought keeps a lot of potentially good players stuck as it keeps one in a state of inertia ie not moving forward as it's sooo easy not to study out of that particular book or look at that DVD for.....days......weeks......months. I've done that very thing myself. If you want to get together for a freebie 30,do have a list of your books & DVDs on hand. I'd be glad to work with you using a book you already own,and I'd honestly recommend clawhammer for starting out. (This same offer is available for any of the ladies that may read this!) Keep pickin!

I think that last message from Banjo Belle was for Jamie--but I totally agree with her about lessons being invaluable. I've only been playing for 2 1/2 years and it was very frustrating at first, but having a teacher helped me to grow quickly and I've had banjo in my band for a year now (a little shaky at first, going good now!).
My advice would be to use all the resources you can--and have a ball!
