As a female musician......

From Gingher on 5/13/2014 4:27:35 PM

What are some of the funny, silly, tragic, or ridiculous things you've run into when playing with the boys?

My main one in the early days was that they didn't want me to be out there too much--with the music. Yes of course get out there and look cute, but don't overstep us playing. Now I am much more confident and don't take any crap.

The pro--they still offer to carry my amp! Haha.

I also had a guy in the crowd after a show say "I usually hate bands with female singers, but you guys were great." I didn't know whether to be insulted or flattered. A little of both I guess.

Unfortunately, there will always be "those guys" out there......I've chosen to forget the encounters I've had with the ego driven, control freak ones. Sad to say,a guy's upbringing and the media still hold a lot of sway as to how women musicians are received and thought about. (the media is by far the most insulting and perpetuates a very twisted picture of what a woman musician is supposed to be. Also, many men get into the "I gotta outdo you in playing" thing and forget that jamming together on a tune is supposed to be a sharing thing, not an opportunity to show how much better they are than they person they are jamming with. In writing this,I want to make clear that not all guys are like this nor am I anti male. But- in our human nature -more often than not,we choose to remember the negative encounters more strongly than the positive ones!

Agreed. I think men are taught to compete while women are taught to collaborate. I have a great group now that gets along well, but I still notice interesting looks from men in the crowd--some saying "hey, this should be interesting!" and others saying "oh brother, a girl is up there!"
