This may have already been ask, but are the other Hangouts going the same path? It looks good, I'm just a slow learner 😶

The new continually inundates with ads at the expense of reading room??... Had to give it up on the Archeology forum for that reason, got to where it wasn't worth muddlin through... Looks like the same format..??

It's not rendering well on my 9.7" iPad Pro. Portrait mode is clipped on the right. Landscape mode clips at the top.

I tried the dev site on mobile today (Android/Chrome) while reading blogs. It worked great.

I don't come onto BHO that often, but when I do, I'm often trying to contact someone on my friends list. I don't see the list on the new page, or actually even any kind of personal page at all. Is that still transitioning over or is that going away?
banjoy - Posted - 09/11/2017: 10:00:14
Under the dev site, my "Activity" is blank. Yet, for everyone else, there is current activity showing in the dev site.
Take a look, please? What's up with this?
New Site (shows zero "Activity")
dev.banjohangout.org/my/banjoy
Current site (shows many posts, including from today)
banjohangout.org/my/banjoy
Thanks.

Oh no, this isn't going away! In fact, we'll be making it much easier to interact with your friends.
For now, though, your friends list is just as accessible as always--under your profile, click "Friends". The quickest way to get to your profile click your name or avatar at the top-right after signing in.

"Continually inundates" with ads? I'm wondering if you're seeing something different than I am... if perhaps you've got malware on your computer. Because the new site certainly isn't ad-heavy.

Kind of hard to explain the reasons for this, but let's just say... it will work normally once the new site is live.

A+ for the desktop version, D for the mobile view that I found.
Just made an update today so on mobile, the login/logout tools are included in the main navigation.

Yes. They'll all be updated at the same time, and in fact today I announced the availability of the beta versions of the other Hangouts on each site. So you can visit dev.fiddlehangout.com, dev.resohangout.com, dev.mandohangout.com and dev.flatpickerhangout.com to see those.

Quick update, folks: plan is to go live tomorrow or the next day (so Sept 13 at the latest) unless we hit an unforeseen snag.
Thanks for all your feedback, and please keep it coming! If I haven't responded to your particular feedback please take heart and know I'm reading all of them and taking action where appropriate.
The site will continue to evolve and improve once the new design goes live--we're just making sure the new design will be nice and usable before we flip that switch.
rgoad - Posted - 09/11/2017: 11:44:03
Thanks for taking action on my notes! Big improvement in the look and function. The login and log out area were visible although still squished to the right side in landscape mode. In landscape the left column with the menu seemed to generous at the expense of the other two areas, especially the right, which needs very little. Really liked the way the home page choices were filling in. The links got a lot of errors but I expect the Cyber-elf was in amongst the gears making changes.
Big improvement in only a few days!

Eric please dont under estimate the group activity. The Uk 5 group has generated lot's of interest in playing the 5 string here in the Uk to the extent that we have an annual get together every spring, and it's very well attended. Without the UK 5 group a lot of us would be isolated...

FYI: this isn't showing up because you've disabled your FriendFeed under your privacy preferences.
We're going to modify the page so it doesn't even show the "Activity" tab in this case.

Thanks Eric for taking a look. But, as you can see, the setting you refer to is the same in both the old and new designs. My Activity is showing in the old design, not in the new. Same setting.
I don't recall even setting it that way to begin with, but I guess I did but apparently it didn't matter, the Activity shows no matter what the preference setting is, it seems. So, I guess, that it's a bug you fixed in the new.
Thanks for taking a look.

Not a bug, but a bit of an odd setup on the current site. There's a difference between your "FriendFeed" and your list of recent forum posts. On the current live site, you can use the privacy setting to turn off your FriendFeed... but you can't hide your list of recent posts.
On the new site, there is no list of recent forum posts on your homepage... it's all under "Activity" and you can hide this using the same privacy setting that used to only hide your FriendFeed.
banjoy - Posted - 09/12/2017: 13:32:52
I think I understand. The "Activity" is more or less the RSS feed. In the old, that is what was turned off and on, the activity showing in the user's home page displayed no matter what. The new site, both the RSS feed and visible activity are the same, and respond the same to that setting (makes sense!). I think that's what you're describing. So not really broke, just different in each design.
Thanks Eric.

...I suppose it will take time [more for some than others, and 'way more for some of us] to learn some stuff [like computer/internet AND banjo]. Sometimes exasperation overtakes patience. We shall see.

Hey! Was online and navigating to the media section when you flipped the switch and it went to the new site! You fixed the mobile issues I have seen so far. Exciting to see how it goes.
Thanks for the great site and hard work.

Wasted screen space, move left and right frames, which are probably used infrequently, into task bar and reclaim a huge amount of space.

fitch5string - Posted - 09/12/2017: 17:01:01
Please change it back!! Too much space on each side of the actual forums, I cant use a google link to go to an archived subject like before, the colors are horrible. Sorry, my 2 cents Eric.
OM45GE - Posted - 09/12/2017: 17:14:06
I have to add my voice to those that don't like the new format. It seems much less user friendly.
Crusty - Posted - 09/12/2017: 17:20:47
Eric, I wish you would allow someone to clean up the organization of the reviews. Since some users don't appear to understand hierarchical organization it's become a jumbled mess, but it could be fixed by someone moving the misplaced reviews to their proper category/subcategory.
I guess I'm going to have to buy a huge monitor to read the text on this new layout.
trapdoor2 - Posted - 09/12/2017: 17:24:50
Heck, I've got a 24" monitor and the text is still too small...and low(er) contrast.
Ok, I'm sure I'll get used to all the other stuff. I'm not at all happy about having 20% of my screen's horizontal space taken up by site sponsors. I get that they pay the bills...but I'd rather not have that much real-estate trying to get my attention.

Ah, sweet relief, at last I can read forums on my phone. Nice work!

Some features I don't like:
You can't jump to the last post in a topic. The best I can do is go to the last page and then scroll down.
It doesn't show who was the last poster. That was an easy way to see if something new have been posted to a topic I was interested in.
The side bars are way too wide leaving too little space in the middle for the threads.
The spacing on the sidebars means you have to scroll down to find things instead of being able to see them when you're at the top of the screen.
I don't find the fonts easy to read.
What happened to the function buttons like add link, insert photo, etc.?
Sorry Eric, I don't like it at all.
AndrewD - Posted - 09/12/2017: 17:44:34
Superficially more attractive. Less readable (have you considered the average age and therefore eyesight of your readership ?). Much less efficient use of screen real estate so more scrolling around required to use it.
There seems to be a new school of GUI design that considers that coloured text on a lighter background of the same colour is somehow a good thing. Where's the source of this nonsense that all designers seem to be following ?
I'm having the same problems at work. I work for a software company that has redesigned it's, admittedly old fashioned but very clear and usable front-end in the same way - what I call the "50 shades of grey" version.
Feedback suggests that you have successfully optimised for phones - But looks like it's at the expense of laptop and desktop users.
Of course I should have provided this feedback when it was in Beta - But as I never had any problems or suggestions I never looked at that bit of the forum.
Nancy - Posted - 09/12/2017: 17:48:36
I would like to see who is posting on the topics.
Where is the add on thingy...in case you want to correct or add on something.
Hard to read. The beige is strange...blue letters...pale blue...contrast, Please
rgoad - Posted - 09/12/2017: 18:03:46
I also noticed that post is larger font than everyone else's. Not sure why. This is the first time that has happened with fonts.
fitch5string - Posted - 09/12/2017: 18:20:58
And..Id rather see drop down menus on the links in the left sidebar instead of the gigantic boxes that flash up when you move your mouse over them. They block the whole view of the center section. It is easier to see on my iphone. This might make a good iphone app but does not work well at all on a PC.

On PC and iPhone (both Chrome), Rich Text isn't working. Otherwise, I, for one, like the new site!
Nashvolk5 - Posted - 09/12/2017: 18:52:36
Actually, I just realized I was using Safari on the iPhone. Just tried it on Chrome, and rich text is working fine. Very mobile-friendly, I must say!
bubbalouie - Posted - 09/12/2017: 19:08:42
It's working fine on my P.C. but I can't find my pictures.
I wouldn't be surprised if I broke it for everybody by storing too many on here!
