Participate in what way? Do you participate by playing the banjo or using it as a platform to disparage musicians who are more accomplished, soulful and successful than you at what they do? Play guitar, too? Have you considered going over to the guitar forum for a while to make some unkind and abysmally ignorant comments about Merle Travis?

It's really okay if you don't get what the fuss over Earl Scruggs is about, but it gets a lot of people's dander up when you use it as an excuse to show your hiney. If you are all hiney, and that is all you have to show, I forgive you.

Ive never met a REAL player at a Fest,SPBGMA, IBMA etc. that wasnt interested in hearing another player play(in 78 as a NOOB or now). Anyone who has honestly studied this instrument and achieved a certain level just isnt made that way. Its not in the DNA. Only on HERE could this happen. Ive never seen people TRY to make such strong arguments for NOT playing. (its like you guys locked yourselfs in your motel room and we're tryin to get ya to come out and pick a tune. Hollerin every excuse through the door why ya shouldnt ) I guess in some eyes (we know who ya are) , I should go to prison for being a bully.. . Yeah, never going to a mans page to hear his music no matter his skill level...Just NOT done with REAL players. Yes, its VERY clear there are 2 ,totally different as night, and day personna's on here..My page proves THAT from the HUGE amount of support I recieve and it AINT from Virtual Players............Hmmmm?......

Yeah man , EVERYBODYS Mic sounds like its being run through a Small Stone on the chat.. Come and pick on SKYPE some time . MUCH MUCH MUCH better quality... JOEMAC and I play on there for HRS and I also teach and its not even REMOTELY the same . Dont know why voices are clear and banjos are distorted and phasy on BHO chat????

Geez, big guy...I'm on your side on this issue. Lighten up. And don't you worry, I'm far from "upset"..

Why would I want to share my music with you? Is that part of the deal here at the hangout. Starting to look like it. Sleep well, it's just banjo music......and I love it!

Lets just kill this thread. Ive heard all I care to from string breaker. Most of us know what hes about anyway. I have nothing to say to him on any forum. Nothing personal against him, but online, I have no use for him. Im going to get this thread locked for good. I thank everyone who attempted to keep it on topic, But with trolls around, its nearly impossible to keep it level headed.

Richard Dress - Posted - 11/10/2010:  09:03:45

First of all, in this endless thread started by John, I haven't seen him bully or keep an enemies list or do anything out of line. The thread was well meant and generally helpful. I think mikey5string had what should have been the last word, but this idea of posting soundfiles has persisted and, I believe, gotten out of hand.

If the HO is to be positive and useful to the banjo community, specifically the beginner community, it should have a primary focus on beginners. The most helpful thing a beginner can get is an honest assessment of his playing. By posting a soundfile on the HO, the beginner has a good chance of getting an honest appraisal from a bunch of good banjo pickers. My fear is that the tone of this particular thread is going to cause some uneasiness in the beginners about posting an MP3 of what is very likely to be some bad banjo playing. Beginners don't usually post MP3s of professional level picking--but these crappy beginner posts (with the consequent feedback) are what makes the HO useful to the beginner community.

Now when the good pickers post MP3s of their cool picking, does that advance the banjo community? It does give a little bit of credibility to their posts but not a lot. Even a mediocre picker can be a good teacher. A great picker could be totally wrong about everything he pontificates on. What does a soundfile really tell us? (How about the waltz example I just posted? It sounds a lot like Stanley, but it's really me in disguise. Ain't I great?)

I don't think going down the ego road is helpful and excess is counterproductive. What if stringbreaker posted a great MP3? Does that mean anything he says about Earl's accomplishments as a master artist should be taken seriously?

mullie1 - Posted - 11/10/2010:  09:05:39

Great post, Richard. I agree completely............

Banjophobic - Posted - 11/10/2010:  09:11:48

I agree Richard. I want to hear soundfiles from blowhards like Stringbreaker who try and build himself up by diminishing others playing. Its just the southern guy in me I quess. If you wish to talk trash about others playing, then I think its fair to hear how great 'you' are. This has no basis in logic, but has much to do with a persons integrity. It apprent that string breaker has no desire to prove he has any and thats sad. Anyway, again, thanks to everyone who replied with real intent to contribute. Ive asked Eric to lock the thread.

Its a sad fact, but Fakes, or Trolls thrive on Websites like this. I have had it this side of the Pond. If people want to Knock somebodys Playing, they should at least have some kind of proof that they can Play themselves. Most of these Fakes wont even have a Picture on there H/P. Its just Weird

Totally agree. This is an interesting topic and I enjoy seeing what people are all about at the HO. Some posters are taking things just a bit too seriously so it would make sense to delete the occassional flaming (thus, my "train wreck" comment). No need to delete the thread though.......Overall some good points are being made and when it's kept friendly it reflects well on the Hangout.

If stringbreaker did post a mp3 (great or not) then ten guys would immediately pounce on it and say "what you played at points x, y and z you got (directly or indirectly) from Earl"
Because if you play 3-finger style, there is no way to avoid it.
That would be the value of it, not to judge if he was good or not.
...and as to whether my sound posts have been of any value to the banjo community - who knows? I have had a few people say that it helped them.

Thombanjo says :

It's just being human to take things said against you personally. Yes, it's an interesting topic when objectively viewed under a microscope but what Artist ever claimed to be totally objective about his art ? I use the term because folks like John H., John B. Lawrence D., Joemac, Jim and many others that I could name here are ARTISTS. I don't know them all personally but I take negative stuff against them to heart as I take negative stuff against banjo players to heart. It's part of being passionate about your music. This thread went way beyond denigrating Earl Scruggs. Virtually every player on here who came to Earl's defense was put down as "not being good themsevles on the banjo." It's hard not to take that personally. I don't really play bluegrass and have only been playing three years or so but I know the talent and skill required to play bluegrass well. The folks I mentioned have it in spades. The fellow who began spewing this stuff is a lier. I don't know a "professional" in any genre; art, theater, dance, sports, music who would totally dismiss the ones who came before and paved the way. It's just not in the person's interest to do it. To say that Earl didn't do anything that Snuffy Jenkins didn't do first is like saying that the Beatles didn't do anything that Chuck Berry didn't do. This may have been true at first but the Beatles (whether you like them or not) went beyond American rock and roll just as Earl went beyond Snuffy Jenkins. So what ? Earl isn't God but he definitely put the banjo on the map just as Bill Monroe put bluegrass on the map. If it is a matter of being in the right place at the right time...so what? The professionals who responded with their opinions( fairly INFORMED ONES ) to the anti-Earl fellow were criticized and were criticized for THEIR PLAYING SKILLS as well. THAT doesn't make sense...a real professional would never do that because it goes against self-interest to do that. You never know who is in a position out there to hire you or pass along a recommendation for you. Why would a professional do that? IT'S BECAUSE THIS PERSON IS NOT A PROFESSIONAL . If I claim to be an expert/professional, I don't feel threatened when asked to play my instrument. The poser WILL feel threatened every time AND even comes up with the excuse of " sound files don't prove anything because you can get some else to play." What an out ! Well...an interesting topic maybe, but to people who have devoted their lives to the art of playing a really difficult instrument, the hatred spewed at them and the "founder of the feast" is something that they will always take personally.

this is the problem. you think its derived from earl. i dont and can prove it came before him. if you use a 3 finger roll on a banjo people shouldnt scream and say its scruggs style when he didnt invent it.

The funny thing is that The KIDD and I are on the same side as far as I can tell. I just don't think his approach is helpful. Two of his latest posts were pulled--that is up to the moderators. If it were up to me I would have left them in as helpful to making my point.

I am pretty sure there was a lot of behind the scenes whispering to the mods when I was posting on the AGW threads. I think it is sneaky grade-school behavior and I don't engage in it. I try to keep all my HO stuff public (except when I recommend my BanjoHero Guide--I try to keep what looks like self-promotion off the public threads). And if someone is beating me up in an argument, I won't go crying to the mods.

Stringbreaker is just chumming the water to see what craziness he can stir up. He hasn't made any worthwhile points, but he has done a good job trolling in the HO waters. And now with all this soundfile stuff he's getting it muddied up all over again: Earl hit Snuffy with a brick and stole his fingerpicks, Earl smokes cigars, Earl's momma wears combat boots. It's all irrelevant; it's just chum. Who cares? Stop making him look so cool calm and collected. Go back and read mikey5string's post and let it all go. Stop with the cannibalism.

I too am tired of this thread so I think I'll get it locked.
(I can picture all the moderators right now wondering how a regular reader can do that).

My problem with Pat Costello isn't ever with anything he says about the banjo. I agree pretty much with his main points about teaching. My issue with him is that he is rude which repels people from the point both of us try to make. In addition, he accuses people who disagree with him of having bad motives and that is the farthest thing from the truth.

There isn't anyone on here trying to make anyone a bad banjoist. All of us want to help you become a better banjoist. When someone disagrees with me, their motivation is exactly the same as mine: to help the reader become a better picker/frailer/musician. The ranting and raving may be entertaining to some, but it is more distracting than helpful to most.

This thread has basically been a waste of bandwidth; nothing productive has been accomplished. I've only met Ron once and I've got to say his already very high stock went up big time, but I do worry that he might need to try decaf and let the small things go. Life is too short to let others control you. I know its hard but it like the people standing around in Nazi uniforms spouting nonsense; nobody gives them any real consideration. In the end Earl's sound defends him better than any words.

I do wonder why anyone who clearly doesn't like Scruggs style banjo would bother reading the Scruggs forum where much of this started. Seems like a mature rational person would simply spend time elsewhere. I know I don't spend much time in rap or hiphop forums :) Speaking or rap, I'll add another data point regarding Earl's playing. Lizzy Long has a music CD with DVD of video showing background stuff including interviews. By far the most bizarre thing on the tape is during an interview Lizzy mentions that Earl has influenced people in nearly every genre except rap. Next on the video is Lizzy doing a rap and Earl playing rap banjo. My son heard it one day and gave a thumbs up. He has absolutely no interest in banjo but Earl's playing caused him to spend some time looking for banjo music. I can say with extreme confidence that no other banjo player in the world could have gotten my son to spend 30 seconds listening to banjo. I exposed him to nearly every banjo player ever recorded growing up and not one player made a dent. Earl is very special, oh and he invented rap banjo :)

Sorry for the side trip. I do wonder if maybe there should be a forum created for argument/opinion/chaos ... etc. Then when a debate pops up it could be moved over to the bull ring and let peace and serenity reign in other places. We should be arguing about strings, head tension, woods, other things that impact tone like what type of shoes you wear, ... etc.

If you think that all Scruggs style picking means is a three finger roll you either have no clue or no ears. Or maybe you have ears but if you do make sure you don't flush the toilet after sitting on it because you may loose something valuable that comes out and goes down the drain.

Hi John B.,
Though your original 1st. post meant no harm and you cetainly didn't expect 18 pages of yay and nay posts as to whether Earl began the 3 finger style of banjo or not, now you know why I rarely post here.

People love to ex (es) postulate from their keyboards and few really know what is going on. Many posts have been very reasonable and some not too reasonable.

I don't know why, at this point in your career, you'd be offended by people not loving Earl's contributions to banjo. It has always been that way and most professionals know that 3 finger banjo existed in several different styles long before Earl came on the scene with his polish and touch.

Most students I teach have barely even heard of Earl Scruggs let alone be fascinated by his style. After I introduce them to Earl's playing, they usually change their minds. It's simply a matter of new generations of banjo lovers....Be well John...Jack

Here is what I said about Earl Scruggs, when I added to the article about him on Wikipedia:

"Scruggs built on earlier styles to develop a truly new and readily identifiable style, involving: unprecedented smoothness, syncopation, and uninterrupted flow; a large vocabulary of unique and original licks; blues and jazz phrases, evident in backup and in solos such as 'Foggy Mountain Special;' and an overall coherency and polish that other stylists lacked, which inspired imitation by newer generations of banjo pickers.”

I agree with Larry Perkins and his assessment of Scruggs's contributions. What more can you say about Earl Scruggs? He was the one who inspired so many of us to play bluegrass banjo. Case closed (as somebody else said, I forget who).

Michael

All I can say is job well done Larry! If I can find it, I will post a soundfile of a live Sruggs break to "Six White Horses" in 1957, I beleive, that Earl played a break that when I heard it I just about wrecked the car! It involved the first string on the third fret, and bending the hell out of the second string on the fifth fret, single string type of electric guitar lick, and I'm sure you know the live version I am speaking of Larry. It wasn't a bit like any other thing I had ever heard him do before. Anyway, thanks for your posts, your knowlege and willingness to always share what you know on the topic of Earl. As for the "Earl's Breakdown" without a cam style tuner, yes I have done that before, because I didn't have cam tuners when I was trying to learn that tune! This was also about the time I broke a lot of fifth strings on the banjo I was learning on, because it didn't have any spikes or capo, tuning it up to play with the records. Good days!

if you go up to a classical guitarist and tell him he is playing travis style for using his fingers he'll laugh.
This is a very poorly contrived parallel to what you are trying to say. Sorry. Nobody in their right mind is going up to Bela and tell him he is playing Scruggs Style, either. I thought you said you knew what Scruggs Style was.

we have a scruggs style forum when it shouldnt be called that. half things in there dont have anyting to do with what earl played.
Well, you are half right. There is nothing wrong with having a Scruggs Style forum for those who are interested in Scruggs Style banjo...there are plenty of people to justify it. I have a slight aversion to say I play in Scruggs style for a different reason. I have no problem honoring his contribution to the banjo and to bluegrass music...I just can't play that stuff as well as he can.

go to the fiddle or guitar hangout. see if there is a clarence white style or doc watson section.
What does that have to do with anything? This forum didn't come up with the term "Scruggs Style". That's been around since before Al Gore invented the internet.

If you want a new section on BHO, why not petition the forum leaders? Don't spew ignorance and untruths about other musicians. It doesn't solve anything, and it makes you look bitter and jealous (for starters).

If this forum condones or allows hateful remarks like "Earl is still playing the same tired old licks from 1952, or he didn't play in tune" or implying he is some kind of musical charlatan, then that would discourage a lot of folks from joining in.

Hi Ron,
Just listened to your sound samples....excellent playing as always...Jack p.s. I hope to the heavens that this thread ends.

People have this insatiable need to be seen on the internet. Earl has been interviewed and thoroughly explained the origins of his contributions to the bluegrass style of banjo and how he came up with some of his arrangements. I cannot believe that this is still going on--including me be well Ron...Jack Baker NYC...Larry P: your rather extensive post has cost me my eyesight ..Jack

Larry mentioned Area Code 615 and Bobby Thompson. When Bobby was asked of his major influence in learning the banjo he would always reply, "I learned from the master, Earl Scruggs."
In my own dealings with Mr. Scruggs through the years, he has always been a gentleman. As I posted early, I have great respect for him.
