Don Reno is a good banjo player but he very sloppy in alot of his playing. I have albums with him playing 'Kansas City Railroad Blues' and he goes up the neck and he flubbs it bad. Really Bad. Earl Is MUCH better.
id like to hear earl even attempt kansas city rr blues. or limehouse blues, or even a fiddle tune with notes don played!

Earl never proclaimed himself as the creator of 3 finger style 5 string banjo playing. I've seen it written where he talks about those who proceeded and influenced him. I think it is mentioned in his book. You would have to be one of those nutty history revisionists to claim that he wasn't the most influential and innovative banjo player of all time.
As far as why the poster in question seems to have a beef with Earl and his playing is anyone's guess. Ignorance maybe.

I always thought that the most important traits of a great musician, aside from musicality, were professionalism, class, and humility. All of which Earl harnesses and exemplifies first and foremost, as I have observed via recordings, videos, interviews, and my personal meetings with him. I do not believe that truly talented individuals should have any reason to bash the artistic work of another without compromising their own integrity. In the world of professionalism, there should only be respect for others and their talents.

Earl is Number one, I listen to Foggy Mtn. Banjo more than anything else,, BUT, I have records of Bobby Thompson, who could play Scruggs Style,, Reno Style,, And Thompson Style,, also I have Eddie Adcock,, Butch Robbins,, Vic Jordan,, John Hickman,, Bill Kieth,, Jim Mills,, Bob Black,, Rick Shubb,, raymond Fairchild, and SOOOO Many other great banjo pickers, I would never bash any of these pickers, They are all great, As far as someone mentioned above, some do not like Lester's singing, I do like it,, But I think I have stated before, I often put on (Gotta Do My Time),, and try not to listen to Lesters singing, Just lisyen to all off Earl's Great Breaks,, seems like He used most all off His breaks on That song, ANOTHER Note, I have played Cripple Creek for 35 years, and thought Not bad, Then the other day I played His Cripple Creek and noticed How great His Timing, and Touch was Just Great..
Pick It Earl.

Earl Scruggs even said in his book he had other influences in his three finger roll. but he took and he went on and developed it and made it popular. I think thats why they call it "Scruggs-style Banjo"
He is a music inovator for the banjo. He has done so much for the instrument and I think We all owe(scruggs-stlye, clawhammer, and melodic) Earl a debt of gratitude for what he has done. nuff said

great banjo players dont have a market on truth.
It isn't "greatness", it's all the cumulative years of experience playing the banjo those men and women have, meeting other banjo players on the road and in the studio. It's the thousands upon thousands of lessons they have given. It's sitting backstage at festivals with other bands and talking about who sounds great and what works and what doesn't. It's the countless recordings they own and have listened to, going back as far as recorded sound can go.
Great banjo players don't have the market on the truth.
But neither do mediocre banjo players.
The difference of course is, that I respect the opinion of the great banjo players.
The opinion of alleged banjo players who purposely and anonymously incite an argument, citing only his/her own opinion rather than any true examples, who ignore any argument that he/she can't easily refute, those opinions I don't respect.

So stringbreaker NEVER plays the same lick twice? And plays his OWN material?
I think he can not play a note on the banjo. Otherwise he would post some sound files as so many have asked him to do.
I would like to know what made him have such a dislike for Mr. Scruggs.

I have listened to Earl for 30 years and 1 month. There was a time in my life, I was broke, unemployed, didn't have car, owned 2 pairs of blue jeans, 2 shirts and 1 pair of shoes. But so help me, if I had $8, I'd go to the record store and see if there was a new LP with Earl.
In those days, I never dreamed, I would be invited to visit him at his home.
He took my RB12 out of the case, said something like do you mind if I play? ( Like I'd say, umm well, Mr Scruggs, I'd rather you didn't )
He did not put on any picks, warm up, or so much as clear his throat.
He played Sally Ann, very fast, very clean, smoothe as silk, and with the greatest of ease.
You just had to there, words come up short.
I am sure a number of people here have had a similar story, but here is the impression I had.
As good as I thought he was, he's about a hundred times better.
There have been a number of fabulous players, and I probably have multiple numbers of cassettes, LP's, and CD's of perhaps most of the people who's names are known in the banjo community. If I lived to be 10,000 years old, I would never be as good as any of these.
There are a small handful that, like Earl, I would consider to be genius.
But to me, Earl is still simply, far and away, the best at making a banjo sound good.

First off, I don't usually post on these sort of topics, as they are ridiculous and just something to get everyone worked up, but this one has gotten me more than a little worked up! If I were to show this thread to JD, Sonny, and tons of other legendary banjo players, the comments would have to be all bleeped out! Everyone has their right to an opinion and what they like, as that is what makes the world go around, and what keeps music, as well as many things in life continually growing. BUT, and it is a BIG BUT, when you go beyond an opinion to say Earl Scruggs, or anyone else isn't worth a damn, you're treading on thin ice my friend! While you may not like Earl's playing, you maybe should get an eduacation on Earl's playing before going into this stuff. Does Earl say he invented three finger picking, NO! He will tell you about those very players you mentioned, but my friend, he doesn't play like them! Sure that's where he heard it, but he doesn't play the same way. Arrangements? Sure he heard this stuff, and his arrangements are similar, but is that stealing? I have been influenced by many a picker and use their licks, but am I stealing? HELL NO, I am doing something they did because I love it! I say that is paying respect to the one's that influenced you!!! Do me a favor and ask Scott Vestal about Earl's playing, or Bela, or Ron Block, or just about any banjo player on the planet! I have live stuff of Earl where he is playing a lick that Ron Block uses now that was recorded on radio in 1955, and way too many things to list! Every time I have thought Earl didn't use a lick, I get corrected by listening to a live recording and finding it somewhere. Now lets move to tone, timing, taste, and melody. Contrary to what some inexperienced folks would say, melody is f^&*ing hard to play, to make sound great by leaving meaningless notes out. You have to have great tone, timing for sure, and space between notes! Earl was and is a master of this! I am not saying do not stray from the melody, we all do and so did he. Now on to his tunes. I am guessing you are a composer of some sort, and have written many a tune/song with very original chord changes and very distinct melodies, in which no part of YOUR tune, song has any part of another tune! Somehow I doubt it, just by reading these posts, but I would really be glad to hear some of your tunes/songs so I could learn how to write without one chord change being like any other! The reallity of it is this, in the music we play there is what is called a scale in every chord, and that goes with chords too, so mathematically there are only so many combinations that can be done, granted that number is staggering, but I'll bet you it is hard for you or anyone else to find a song that doesn't have a little part of another in it somewhere, especially in bluegrass music! Listen to country music today, they all sound the same but I don't hear you bashing them, or Bill Monroe, who used a lot of other tunes to come up with his own tunes! But, he did it and they were great and that was what he heard. Let me ask you this, when is the last time you sat down and played Foggy Mountain Breakdown JUST LIKE EARL on the December 11th, 1949 version? I am NOT talking notes here, I am talking roll patterns and the whole enchilada. If you want to record it and give us a listen, I am sure it would be really EASY for you to do! Also, maybe Head Over Heals break, Dear Old Dixie, No Mother Or Dad, Doin' My Time, any of those will do! On another note, I don't hear you bashing JD Crowe, and he plays a LOT of Earl, always has and he is one guy I want to hear you walk up to and give him this speach of how Earl isn't all that! Maybe Sonny Osborne too! Hell let's you and I have a face to face about this subject sometime, as I would love to hear your pickin' and see first hand the "Improvements" you have come up with for the banjo world. I am sure you have some wonderful things you do on the banjo, and some wonderful examples of styles of banjo I would like, but saying Earl isn't all that, well that is another story. While I can respect anyone's opinion, I have to say that anyone that says Earl has done nothing but steal, be repititous, boring, etc.....well friend, you have a LOT to learn and probably not nearly enought time left on this Earth to learn it! I welcome your comments and any suggestions you might have for me!

By the way, the players you list as your favorites, Bill Keith, Bela Fleck, Scott Vestal are some of my dear friends and also some of my favorite players as well! Although I didn't hear you say Bill Keith just copied fiddle players in his banjo playing, or Scott Vestal copying some of Bela or vise versa. I guess that is different somehow. And to Bill, Scott and Bela, forgive me for using you all in this post, I love every one of you and you know it!

Do you NOT have any other banjo player playing out of tune? I have heard all of them out of tune, me included! Maybe you should expand your collection of live/studio recordings! Or better yet, teach us your amazing way of never being out of tune on the banjo!
Ron Stewart Says:
Tuesday, October 05, 2010 @11:55:49 AM
Sorry, I am just reading more of yuour posts. So FMB, Pike County Breakdown, Flint Hill Special, Shuckin' The Corn, has no melody? I'm guessing Dear Old Dixie, Foggy Mountain Chimes, Earl's Breakdown, etc. also have no melody! Can you play those tunes? If so, how can you learn a tune without a melody? Many a banjo player has recorded/played those tunes since Earl first recorded them, how did they learrn them without a melody?
I'll go a step farther! Obviously you are NOT a fan of bluegrass fiddlers, because they all copied things from earlier fiddlers! Have you ever heard of Fiddlin' Arthur Smith? About 90% of the fiddlers we all love were influenced by this man, and copied some of his playing. I saw a little on the fiddle, and I have copied some of his licks, but I guess that makes me insignificant on fiddle as well. Oh, I guess Monroe played melody all of the time, oh wait, his tunes had no melody! I beleive Earl played with Monroe at one time. I guess he stole the break to Summertime Is Past And Gone from one of those players you mentioned, and didn't play the melody! I'm Going Back To Old Kentucky, he sure isn't playing the melody on that one! Molly and Tenbrooks is another he just couldn't find the meoldy to I guess!!! I know you don't care for Bluegrass Breakdown, because it has no melody(see Foggy Mountain Breakdown comment in your post), and it would appear to me you think he stole that break from say, Uncle Dave Macon, Snuffy Jenkins, or someone else he listened to, maybe StringBean! I love String and those guys btw, and I am NOT poking fun at their playing, they were all inovators and excellent musicians we all should thank everyday!!!
I am going to quit reading your posts, because I am getting more p&*$ed off by the minute!
I am sure you will delete my post, but if you're man enough to leave it, I would be very grateful! As for what he did after 1950......60 more years of playing, 60 more years of great recordings for us to listen to, 60 more years of him delivering banjo tunes and breaks and backup that we all love. By the way, not sure you have heard of a banjo tune called "Silver Eagle" he wrote after 1950, along with Earl's Brkdn, Flint Hill Special, Shuckin The Corn, etc. etc.

I assume you know Earl and Don Reno did quite a bit of picking together and they both enjoyed each others playing and held each other in high regard. Wait a minute, a couple of your heros play a lot of single string stuff, kind of like Don Reno did on certain things......Why again are they your heros if they are copying anything or any part of someone elses playing?
I am done with this until you are man enough to reply to this, give us a taste of some of your innovative banjo work, and/or want to get together for some banjo talk/lessons for me!
I have a 4 year old son who can tell you who is the best Scruggs style banjo picker of all time.....he says Earl Scruggs!
Kind of makes you wonder how a 4 year old is so smart and a grown man can be so ignorant!

those tunes are a bunch of licks with no melody. he didnt write dear ole dixie either.
you think his composing was bad because he only had a limited set of scale notes to work with so he had to repeat himself. lol. there are plenty of melodies. bluegrass breakdown is same as foggy mt breakdown with one chord changed. how creative! shucking the corn is same ole alternating thumb roll and licks as his other songs.
there is difference in including melodies, licks done before and doing the same boring thing for 60 years and people calling you a legend.
its not about my playing or composing its about earls.

Hey, I didn't say he wrote Dear Old Dixe, and if you could read you would see that I didn't say he wrote it! Bluegrass Breakdown is different by more than one chord, and exactly what do you consider NOT the same old boring thing, and by whom? I don't think his composing was bad, I didn't say that, YOU think his composing was bad, again, maybe a reading course in your future would be a good thing!
So, I read on your homepage you are expert/professional, who is it you perform with/have performed with, and what are some of the recordings you have made and with whom?
Do you use an alternating roll, forward roll, backwards roll, etc. in your playing? Do any of your heros?
I cannot simply believe you think Shuckin The Corn, and Flint Hill Special, etc. sound the same. You really should take some music courses or something to fix this misconception! They are not alike, only in the fact that both tunes use some of the same roll patterns here and there, but possibly in different combinations.......wait isn't that what banjo is about, or really any instrument playing a melody? There are going to be repeats of roll patterns. Why am I even waisting my time on this? I play every day professionally for a living, either in the studio or on the road, I do have credentials to back it up, both on recordings and on the road with many, many TOP bands. I look forward to your resume!

Other overrated so-called geniuses:
Shakespeare: He stole all his ideas from the Bible and the ancient Greeks. Not only that, but all of his plays use the same words over and over, just put together in different ways.
Einstein: All he did was fix up Newton's Laws of motion.
Newton: He applied the same three laws of motion to explain everything. How lazy!
Monet: He painted a bunch of fuzzy pictures using the same colors over and over. Pffft!
Mozart: He just used the I, IV, V chords over and over.
Ok... that was sarcasm, but do you see the point? When the world sees a genius and you see a hack, CONSIDER THE POSSIBILITY that you might have missed something.

Mr. Ron Stewart,
Thank you! We have been living with this dribble for quite some time. Just one correction to your poetry: Did you know that according to our source Bill Monroe also played out of tune?
Thank you for taking the time to state the truth and backing it with such great references.
Ken

As Merle once said, "You're walkin' on the fighting side of me". To insult a person who is considered a part of the "bluegrass family" is just short of insulting a persons mom or dad. In the case of those who have known Earl, it is probably the same. I have not been long on the BG scene, but, some things in life need to left alone. Stringdinker, you should be ashamed of yourself.
