I just read on the Bluegrass Blog (www.bluegrassblog.com) that Kenny Ingram is leaving Rhonda Vincent & The Rage, effective 12/31/08. Guitarist and vocalist Darrell Webb is also leaving at the same time.

This is very disappointing; I have truly enjoyed Kenny's picking while he was with Rhonda. Now I'm doubly disappointed that I didn't get to attend her show in Greensboro back in September. However, this is the nature of bluegrass musicians, so I wish him the very best in whatever he chooses to do in the future. Maybe he will fill us in when he's ready.

Wow.. that is kind of a bummer. I'm glad I got to see them together a couple of times.

I was wondering the other day why the lineup in most bluegrass bands tends to change over time (much more so than in other forms of music it seems). I was also wondering about something else... how fun would it be to be able to play at the pro level? Part of the fun for me is always having a challenge... a full plate of things I can't do... there is always something new to tackle and learn. At the pro level, it seems like it would get a little boring, especially as a Scruggs style player, once you have a mastery of the techniques, licks, backup, etc.

So, the conclusion I came to is bluegrass bands NEED to shuffle the lineup in order to keep the music fresh and interesting to the players. The musicians are no longer challenged by the instrument or the material... the game for them is to figure out how best to play within a certain group dynamic. Once they get that figured out, mastered if you will, then it is time to move on to a different group that has its own sound and its own set of challenges.

It is indeed very sad news. IMO, there is no that can put drive into bluegrass more than Kenny. His picking is impecable. He is the master of taste, timing and tone. Most of all he is one of the kindest and sweetest guys in the world. He leaves behind big shoes to fill. I for one am sorry he is leaving. I wish him nothing but the very best.

It is the nature of the business...think about Tom Adams and Michael Cleveland before Kenny and Hunter...I thought it would be difficult to maintain the level of professional performances, but Rhonda didn't miss a beat with Hunter and Kenny. My bet is that a new lineup will be put together and 'knock our socks off' next season AND Kenny and Darrell will be going strong as well.

Again, this is the nature of our business...think about the many permutations of Monroe, the Stanleys, and even Flatt and Scruggs. This version had a great run and I feel certain the next stage will as well - for all concerned.

My best wishes to all!

The first time I saw RV&TR, at Claremore, Steve Sutton was playing banjo. And he rocked and had great interplay with Michael. So I don't think I'm gonna lose sleep over this change. I haven't been so much of a fan of the band in the past year or so anyway (besides loving the playing of Mickey, Hunter, and of course Kenny...)

Well, if they're there till the end of the year, it doesn't sound like a precipitate breakup. Could be the end of the contract and they just want to get off the road. That happens. I wonder if John Mark Batchelor is looking for work again.

Lineups seem to shuffle a lot more often when the band's name has a person's name out front of it. I can imagine a few reasons for that maybe.

She fired Darrell Webb? Wow... just wow. Hard to understand why anyone would do that unless he's extremely hard to get along with or he smells bad. That guy is awesome! Same for Kenny. He's a legend. I can't see anyone firing him unless there was some real bad blood for some reason.

Whatever the case, neither of them got fired because there's a better replacement.

Nowhere in the story does it say she fired them. That was just one person's interpretation. Might be the case, but we shouldn't take guesswork as fact.

I'm sure the big K will chime in when he gets close to a computer and will set the record straight. Until then it's all speculation. Maybe contracts expire and the man wants to take a break from the grind and toll that touring takes on the mind and body. It's not all glamor.

Hugh, You would never be able to keep picks on your fingers pickin' behind Rhonda...the drool would make them slip right off! I'd need super glue myself!

In my opinion they were not fired. Rhonda is a good businesswoman and has a good head on her shoulders. When she "fires" someone it's immediate. Rhonda wouldn't wait until December 31, and make an announcement in November if she were firing them. Big K and Darrell are probably leaving to pursue other interests or some other just as valid reason.

As with many personnel changes, rumors abound. No use getting caught up in it, Kenny is a participant here, and I'm sure if he wants to post about it, he will, and if he doesn't...well, that's ok too. It's the time of year for contract changes, personnel cahnges, and studio work. LIke Forrest Gump said, you just never know what you're gonna get.

As always with changes in bands the real professionals won't say a word about the whys and hows, because they are real professionals. Makes sense, don't it? I remember when Mike Bub was fired by Del McCoury: he never said a word about it (except to his close friends of course, maybe, and then they are pros too), he even thanked Del when he did his speech in being awarded bass player of the year at IBMA, and he was obviously very emotional about that. Kenny would never come out and talk about this incident, or maybe he would say it was his decision even if it wasn't. So let's talk about what a great banjo player he is, RV or not, and remember that a job is a job, no matter how much fun one can get out of it. BTW, for my personal taste I'd rather listen to the stuff that Kenny cut with The Nashville Grass (medium tempo and old-fashioned tasteful) than to some of the uselessly (to me) 90 mph numbers he had to do with RV&TR. Just my taste of course.

Well said Silvio. Mr.Ingram is the model of professionalism.

I liked Rhonda V and the Rage, but I don't think they allowed him to shine to his true potential...nobody can play all the backup stuff like him (except maybe Crowe and Earl who are on par). I'm excited about the possibility that Kennys next position will allow him to turn loose all his real bluegrass stuff that puts him in the top banjo players of all time.

I'm with you Dave, I always felt that Kenny didn't get to really kick in and show his skills as much as I'd like to see. Many times I've thought that when he'd start to take a break I would think now here we go, but it was way to short of a break for me. But then I do like the sound of the Banjo

I hope he gets with a real good group if he is wanting to continue playing on the road that is.

I'm sorry to hear Kenny is leaving, but I'm confident things will work out for all concerned, including the fans.

From a personal standpoint, I'm glad it isn't effective until 12/31 because I get to introduce them on stage at a bluegrass festival next weekend (11/15). I've never had the pleasure of seeing The Rage in person or meeting Kenny face to face, although we've visited on line a time or two. Having them at our Four Corner States Bluegrass Festival and Fiddle Championship in Wickenburg, AZ this weekend will be very special, indeed.

I'm with Matt. I think that playing the same songs night after night would have to get pretty old after awhile, especially when you're as good a picker as Kenny. A change of scenery and a change of pace would probably be very welcome after 7 years with the same group. We see it all the time, no matter how great the group is, people just want to do something different after awhile.

While it's certainly possible that Kenny's and Darrell's contracts weren't renewed for 2009, I would be very surprised if this were the case. She obviously couldn't find a better banjo picker. Whatever the case, I hope we will all respect their privacy and not speculate on the reason for their leaving.
